Check out my new Steering wheel..

Look what came for me today. I wanted to wait and see if the guy would even deliver before I boasted but I scored this wheel brand spankin new for less than $400 bucks delivered off ebay. There was another wheel just like it for a M5 (with stereo controls) that went for $1000!

I think this is less than it would cost me to just replace/re-do my stock wheel. I can't wait to get this on my car. Whoo Hoooo...

While this wheel is no Momo as far as feeling perfect, its better than stock. What was kinda a let down was that the grips at 9 and 3 o clock feel as thick as stock. The rest of the rim is much thicker..

    wow; looks nice!

If I really wanted to stick with my airbag, I think I'll go the same route as you. But currently, I *really* like the look of JoeZ's steering wheel (350mm Momo Race).

    Update:

Ok, I was wrong.. Dead wrong. This wheel is waaaaaayyyy fatter than stock. Its as good as a Momo. Maybe not a Momo Course but damn close. I'm still grinning from that wheel...

I was going wait to install the wheel but who am I kidding. Its way easier than even I thought. It took maybe like 30 mins start to finish. Very scared around that "Explosive". There was a small spark when I disconnected the air bag but no air bag light when I went to start it...

    But here's the comparison pics.

Oh and no.. its black stitching. Yeah, I kinda miss the M stitching also.. Maybe the wheel needs a trip to "Leather Z".. =)

Oh and not to rub it in but this wheel is worth it. Even if I had to pay around $1000 for it, I think I would now. There is just nothing like a fat steering wheel to make the car feel sporty.

And lastly, I think I miss my red tabs. The wheel seems almost lifeless even with its wild rim/leather pattern. I dunno. I'll post some pics of the wheel installed tomorrow.

P.s. If the deleting the air bag is not a problem.. Then for sure go with a Momo. There really isn't a better mod.. I just didn't want to hear it from the dealer if I ever have an air bag light again.. =( Plus, I saw this at the last moment. A Momo will set you back around $400 with hub, so how could I pass it up?

Is it possible to "fatten up" our stock wheel by stiching on a couple of layers of leather over the top? Or maybe a thin layer of sponge/rubber covered with some leather?

Might be a cheaper option?? Or not?

I have been wondering the same but I'm not sure what you will do with the airbag, it needs its way out on the cover.

Are you sure the tabs on the new wheel don't come out / can't be swapped? They look very similar to the OEM on the outside. If the new wheel's tabs can be removed, even if the the mounting points are dissimilar, maybe the OEM tabs can be jerry-rigged into the new wheel without compromising the airbag clearance?

The two wheels are the exact same except for the rim/leather. The two tabs just pull out and can be swapped but only after removing the air bag.

I let my friend see it tonite and he said with out a doubt, it looks better with the black tabs, so well see. If I wasn't so tired I take some pics but I'm just getting home right now at like 3:30am. Stay tuned, I'll post some pics tomorrow..

Oh and man does the car drive better. Anyone that has a Momo will test to this.

Speaking of which, anyone want to buy a used Imola M steering wheel with no air bag? I'm taking offers... =)

Ken -- this is your fault! I got too mesmerized by this wheel and I had to get one for myself. And no, I didn't get nearly as good a deal as you!

Hopefully, I'll have it installed next week, while I'm having my additional suspension upgrades done.

Dude, your gonna love it. It even feels smaller in diameter than stock because its got a thicker rim. Its still no Momo or Raid but I think it looks killer for a "Stock" OEM style wheel. Being jealous of E90/E46 wheels will be a think of the past. My old stock wheel feels pretty dated now. Its amazing at what 6 years will do as I remember when that wheel came out. I was saying "Now thats an air bag wheel I can live with"... =)

This may be my first mod that I have nothing to complain about... Ok, I do have one. I seriously doubt anyone would notice my new wheel. But damn, it sure does make driving it better...

Hey Ken, dude... do what you like. Who cares what everyone else likes? If you like the red tabs, use them.. if you like the black ones, stick w/ black!

    Awesome steering wheel dude!! SWEEEEET!!
