Looking at sigs....I see an increasing number of 92'ers here. I consider ourselves a more rarer breed among the E36 crowd, so just for the hell of it, check and also, report your miles and how the car's treatin ya! =P :buttrock
Btw....anyone have a Glacier blue E36? I still wanna see one...
183,xxx still strong, just installed a Dinan throttle body, waiting for my tires so I can throw on the 19's! Although I love my car, it is old, so I'm currently looking into getting a 95-97 M3 soon.

How is the butt dyno with the Throttle Body? I haven't seen many people with em!
:buttrock awesome, mine has 141k going strong!
I got it for next to nothing so I threw it on, my car idles higher now(dme registers more air) and throttle response is better, mid range and top end feels stronger:clap: I figured it could only help, but I have to say I wouldn't have spent $300 plus core for a throttle body, I got mine for $30:12:

158k, things are starting to go wrong. Major shaking at full throttle, probably something loose around the exhaust. Ac is messed up, SLOW power steering leak (probably just replace crimp with screw clamps), rear suspension is pretty dead (car feels like a brick over bumps), seats feel like crap compared to japanese cars, sound system doesnt work (aftermarket subs and amps....something wrong)
Things that I have fixed: replaced rusted exhaust with M3 exhaust, upgraded to e46 shock mounts, blacked grill, new AVS intermediate tires, momo knob, strut brace.
Things i want: new shocks/struts and springs, new rims, clears, tint, everything fixed!!!!
These cars sure cost a lot, but its DEFINITELY worth it all.

I have a '92 320i (E36). I just hit 100,000 KILOMETERS, which makes it slightly over 62,000 miles.
I have a rear shock mount replacement coming up in the near future- but no major problems so far.
Taking the train to work each day sure cuts down the number of miles you put on the car!!

With that mileage, just probably replace your exhaust hangers...they could be loose. yeah and since your getting new shocks anyways, get sportier ones :) Probs don't seem to be that bad, more minor things than anything. Just to a pressure leak test for yuor a/c. I condition my leather seats with leather protectant stuff so they still look basically brand new except for some waear on the side of the driver's seat :D

Well here's my Glacier Blue 92. I have 143K on the clock and she is still pulling strong every day. Overall she has treated me wonderfully with only minor bumps and bruises along the way. Currently though I have started working on a new heart transplant (engine) that will go in late this summer. It will be a completely built 3.0. I have owned the car for 5 years now and have never regretted buying it. Enjoy!

131,000 about. Mine is running extremely well except it isn't getting very good gas milage. I am getting about 240 a tank but I know many get around 300 so I am gonna replace the o2 sensor - last on the tune up list. Also have a rear wheel bearing going out. Other then that everything is great.
Duncan G - How do you like the new control arm bushings. I am gonna be putting in some 95 m3 control arm bushings and just curious hows the ride and how much of a difference does it really make.
Jeffrey
142,900 miles, just replaced the 5spd with a used one, 2nd gear was stripped out. Have a couple of dents, one from under the hood when my coolant fan blew up, and one on the passenger door. I have a horrible hesitation below 3,000 rpm, that I compensate with the clutch. The interior is pretty bad, delaminating doors and panels, headliner. Heater core is leaking pretty bad. A few of the warning lights are burned out. Rear driverside wheel bearing has to be replaced. Just bought the car last october, but the car is still a blast to drive, just a little stressful at times.

Jim - nice clean looking car...
My 5/92 is still a youngin to me...Has about 149k on the clock, and the engine is still silky smooth (for an M50, of course)....No major issues - just a lot of stupid quirky things. The latest is the sunroof rattle which was always there, but has gotten worse. Its a common problem on these. Interior is showing signs of wear. The previous owners never conditioned the seats, so the leather is super hard...I might redo the interior - not sure yet. All in all, I love it, and have become a BMW fanatic now. Honestly though, its the little problems that add up that make me feel that if I couldn't fix all this stuff myself, I wouldn't want the car (too expensive). It pays off though - especially around those twisties :D Funny thing, and I love BMW for this - people see my car and always say "Nice car!"...then I tell them it is 11 years old, and they remark that they thought it was only 3 years old..
Problems? I've had it for 2 years now, and here's a fun little list I hate thinking about:
I've replaced:
Alternator
Compressor
AC Module
Heater Valve
Brakes/ball joints/tie rods
Valve cover gasket
O2 sensor (twice)
Colis/plugs
pulleys
water pump
Thats pretty much it....then, of course the fun stuff:
K&N
Dinan
HDs
Self-dimming mirror
Armrest
E46 RSM
Painted bumpers/rockers

Just hit 199K today on my 92. Engine is strong. Putting Motorsports and Michelins on it tomorrow off a '97M3 (Doublespoke ones). Getting set of 4 plus spare with 4k on them for $500. Starting to Nickle and Dime me...... since I've owned it, 4 years, I've replaced the following
Shocks and Struts (Bilstein HD's), Exhaust (stock), o2 sensor, guibo, radiator, waterpump, thermostat, alternator, rims and tires tomorrow.
need to install lowering springs, interior is cloth but clean, body is straight (had paintless dent removal by dentwizard)

I got 219k miles on mine. It's currently laid up in the garage with a bad wheel bearing. It's getting new brakes and rebuilt calipers while it's in there. The mods are in my sig. Just basic stuff. The AC is broken (has been for years) and the power steering leaks a bit, but other than that, she's top notch. Loves to rev up past 6k every day. :)

Hey, while we're on the subject of how much we love our 92's, I have a sort of related question...I mentioned my interior is bad/rough. Do you think it is worth it to upgrade the interior on an 11 year old 149K mile car? It'll cost me about $800 from what I've priced out. What do you guys think? Or should I save my money and upgrade the car? Not sure what to do...Part wants to replace it and keep the car...the other part of me things the other part is whacked :D
QuestMCoupe

That depends jb, if you're going for looks right now, do the interior, if you have other mods in mind, I'd wait for the interior.

04-11-2003, 04:03 PM
At this point, just looking to clean it up and make it look nice. The outside is in decent shape. The inside doesn't look BMW to me. I guess my concern is - Is it worth it in terms of resale value and stuff...will it add to resale?
stupenal
04-11-2003, 04:48 PM
Not really. Seeing as how many miles and how old our cars are, better start looking towards the long term. If you plan on keeping the car long term, then go for it. If not, dont do it because it'll add resale value. It wont.
If you keep the car long term, it'll provide many years of satisfaction for you if you change it to what you want. Thus, go for it!

92 325is with 150,000 had the motor rebuilt at 140,000 from a misshift. Had to weld in sway bar reinforcements, and subframe reinforcements. Running fairly strong now, but the body is a little beat up, and she's running slightly rough.

I've had a June '91 car for a little more than a year. I think I'm at about 168k and the engine is still going strong. It's been pretty bad other than the engine though. It was poorly maintained, so a lot of things have failed.
Transmission-- replaced w/ M3 ZF
Rear Sub-fram tore out
Replaced shocks & springs w/ Bilstein & Eibach
Replaced Head light switch
Replaced Turn signal relay
Replace muffler (got an Ansa Sport)
bushings & ball joints are shot
Interior is pretty bad-- cracked leather and panels are falling apart
Power locks don't work
AC doesn't work (I have a leak somewhere)
Sunroof doesn't work (broken parts inside)
motor is out on one window
ABS doesn't work
SRS light is on
Anyway, quite a lot of stuff. But it love driving it. I'm working on the suspension some this weekend. For the most part it's not that hard to work on, and the stuff that I've fixed doesn't seem like it'll wear out anytime soon. I just wish I'd bought one that was in better shape to start with. Live and learn...

11/91 107,000 miles, PERFECT interior/exterior. only gripe i have is a rattle that seems to be coming from around the right front wheel over bumps. I think that something needs to be replaced or something. It runs perfect and is faster than most 325s for some reason. I love it.

Steering Rack
Inner and outer tie rods
Spark Plugs
Fuel Filter
O2 Sensor
The oil pan gasket needs to be done but not now, I basically add oil from now and then
Swapped the stock steroe for an MP3 CD Player
Headlights needed a polishing job

Cabin Filter
ABS Control Unit, and still it is not working cuz of faulty front speed sensor !

Couple of months after purchase, both window's went, like replaced the coolant level sensor 3 tiems, radiator went, sunroof. Paint finish aint that great either. Other than that, its running great only got 98,300 miles on it. Havent broken 100 but getting close.

Nothing major switched the water pump, one of the belts, theromstat and the rear wheel bearing.
Need to fix the passenger window, my friend broke my sunroof (by sliding the piece that matches the headliner by hand so it jammed itself back there), and a funny rattle like something is loose in the rear wheel probably needs new brakes. Runs Excellent!

My 92 325i is kickin' it still, 153k mis and still eating rice and spitting it out in a maelstrom of metal mania.
umm..... sorry about that.
Anyway, a previous owner installed wood trim in my car... pretty high quality stuff, as far as that junk goes, but the guy did a terrible job with the door panels. All but the driver's are hanging off at the top (even after I spent a bunch of time installing new clips and cutting new clip holes... it seems that these panels get quite dry and unruly after a while. oh well.)
I've been battling with bump steer up front... did m3 control arms and solid offset bushings which only turned sloppy bump steer into ultraprecise arm-wrenching bump wiggle. I really need struts, but I have to come up with the $240 for parts. dammit.
My passenger-side sideskirt has a bit of damage, and some rust, which looks like hell. I keep meaning to call some junkyards to find one cheap.
Other than that, this thing is awesome. Bought it a few months ago for just under $4g... but my father's a car dealer, and I got it at the auction, so I basically stole it. I'm planning on keeping it through the summer and selling it for profit for school next year (a car is more of a harm than a help at nyu.)
135K.. i got her last october. shes pretty good except for a super slow power teering leak. :)
stupenal
04-12-2003, 01:32 AM
Seems like everyone has a super slow power steering leak. Cause? BMW used crimp fasteners instead of screw types to connect the hose to the reservoir. Go to your local auto zone and pick up the screw type. At least, this is what I've been told.
I feel bad for everyone's door panels. Mine are in perfect condition. For the longest time, my drivers side panel was loose, but a few clips from the dealer (plastic small clips cost almost a dollar each! and you need 11!!!) and its now very secure.
Rattling noises are rampant still. Sunroof rattles over big bumps, glove box is rattling, and some other stuff yet to be identified rattles. Maybe i'm just too picky, what can i expect from german interiors after 11 years.
By the way, I have a 7/92 production date.
I've got a nice sound system in my car. 2 kenwood amps, an eq in the glovebox, kenwood head unit, kenwood 10 cd changer in the trunk, and 2 MASSIVE 10" bazooka removable subs. Although they weigh around 40 lbs each, i can easily take them out if i need more cargo room. I recommend these if people dont want to give up all their trunk for those boxed subs.

92 325is...Production date 2/92...I bought it for around 7k a year ago with 170k...now it has close to 180k...It came with a 98 M3 interior...3.23 M3 LSD...M3 fiberglass kit...ugh...330ci rims...euro lights...so the interior is in awesome shape...Over the past year I've replaced/added the following
-BMP Chip
-PAR Intake w/Heatshield
-GC RSMs
-M3 Shifter
-M3 OEM bumper
-JL Stealthbox
-Alpine 7894
It looks and drives like a newer car. People don't believe that my car is 11 years old. I still get great mileage with this car...usually around 27mpg highway and 23 city. Engine still pulls strong...The tranny is not doing so well though...2nd gear synchro is not good so I have to double clutch when downshifting...no big deal. I'm pretty sure that this car will go over 200k+ miles...or until I get a M3.

I have a '92 325is. 163,000 I've had it since about 128,000. It was originaly Brillintrot but i just recently got into a fender bender. It wouldn't have been as bad if it wasn't lowered. The whole grill was pushed in almost to the block. There was about 5,300 dollars worth of damage. They appraised it at a little bit above 9,000. The adjuster said that if the damage went to a certain amount that it would be totalled. I was pretty sure i could Fix it totally for a bunch less than that, so i'm currently rebuilding it!! I've decided to change the color to Laguna Seca Blue. I also found some demon eyes and a nice cabon fiber hood. I put the 97 front grill on it. I sent a guy in canada (BMWlover) a money order for a Reiger front bumper, but i haven't heard from him in a month(any help is welcome..) I purchased some M3 motorsport rims not to long ago that weren't on the car at the time. Other than that minus the normal leaks and coil problems that i have fixed, its running great!! Like some other people said, it is faster than most 325's. I don't understand it.... but its true, and for the record, i'm talking stock. right now i just have the power steering leak. I haven't really dove into it yet, a little busy with the body work and getting it in BLUE!
Other tinkering and toys::
Eibach sport springs, Jim comforti chip, lightweight wing, rear subframe reinforcements, M3 transmission with uuc SSk and RE WSR, home-made cold air intake(kinda dinan style), deleted fan, 3.91:1 diff., tinted, hawian print air freshener.
Coming soon...Zex kit, M3 engine????? maaayybeee..... longer into the future.

I paid $5900 in oct. but I'm paying considerably more with all the repairs now. RRdawho? you said your sun roof is jammed so you covered it, how did you do that? Mine leaks like a siv, I don't have the money to fix it right now, and it gets pretty wet here in St. Louis. :95

I've got a 325i that my wife bought as her primary car about 5 years ago. We're the second owners. Burgundy metallic with a tan interior. Overall it has been the most troublefree car we've ever owned! It now as a little over 120,000 miles on the clock. Major repairs:
- replaced the passenger's side door panel two years ago
- replaced the master brake cylinder two years ago
- fixed a leaking power steering system a month ago
It now has a few niggling issues. I need to respray the passenger side rocker panel; the exhaust has a rattle when idling (probably a broken mount or loose sheetmetal); my wife bounced off of a snowbank a few years ago, so the spoiler is cracked; need a new driver's side headlamp (broke the signal light lens in a minor fender bender- the plastic connector on the headlamp broke too); and the rear bearings are making noise.
What a great car! What a great board! I used to own a 1988 M-3 (bought in '89 and sold in '92) and miss her every day.

im prob getting system and rims next, any suggestions on tire? (i dont know much about them)
also, what else should be on my 'to do' list?
other than smashing my car into a snowbank, it has treated me very well, only major problem i have had with her is that my coolent fan broke and i overheated like crazy.

When im not using it, I just put a car cover over my car. That way it doesn't get wet. My roof is in the propped up stage, not open roof. So if im driving and its raining water doesn't get it. If your's is stuck or something and you don't think a rail is jammed, open up the panel where the button for the roof is and there should bea socket where u can use an allan wrench to manually close it.
Other than that my car hasn't had any problems whatsoever, and I like to take her on sprited driving w/ 141k :D

I traded a 1994 toyota 4x4 truck for mine.
1992 318is with about 197k miles on it now. I got it 2 years ago with about 132k miles. So I've put close to 60k in two years on it.
Even with 197k miles I'm autocrossing the car. My engine is acting up dies on me from time to time not sure why. Had to replace most the susp from wear and tear. My interior is basically in perfect shape had to replace a few parts thou. Overall a great car and fun to drive. I'd recommend a BMW to anyone that enjoys driving or racing.

92 325is here with just over 88K.....paid $6500 for it in January, has some minor dings and dongs on the body, but in reasonable great shape for a car that old....had to get the crank sensor replace right after I got her, set me back over $600, but that has been the only problem so far. I have already replaced the headlights, they were faded beyond repair, installing an M3 exhaust/shocks/springs soon for my first mods. My only regret is the fact that she is an auto, but the price was right and the engine is very strong. I'm lucky to have a VERY active local BMW CCA Chapter who have helped me immensely (dasMafia, Mr Project, etc) otherwise I would be lost, but I must admit, I am in love with a lil' black girl right now, and her name is Beth. She has been good to me, and I am good to her.

 lots of 92'ers!
Alright my turn:
brillantrot built in 4/92 and has about 139k miles, of which the past 30 have been brutal on it.
suspension replaced with bav auto springs, bilstein shocks, rd sways, and m3 control arms
rear subframe ripped apart and was repaired$$$
rear swaybar ripped off and was repaired and reinforced *oops*$$$
currently squeaking in back (think it's swaybar links)
we have another m50 sitting in our garage which is going to be rebuilt to a 3.1. I'll start a new thread about that soon.
right now the mods are ltw flywheel, re shortshifter, intake, aa exhaust, jc chip
The head will be redone after the new engine is done and in due to cost constraints but it'll have 260/256 cams and all that fun valvework done...
what a piece of work.
oh yeah; normal complaints like sunroof rattle and beat interior but thats an 11 yr old car for ya...

nother 92'er here. I was wondering, is it normal for me to have to rev it to 1,500 rpms to get a good take off in 1st? I'm thinking my fuel injectors might be clogging, or maybe the ignition coils going. I have fresh Bosch +4's in, so I know that's not it. Any advice would be appreciated. Thanks

That's hearsay. I've been running Bosch +4's for well over 100k miles (two sets) without problems.

That Is NOT hearsay. You're lucky, because I know of multiple cases of burned valves from these plugs. Not even close to worth the risk IMO.

The only real problems i had with this car is the transmission and cooling system.. the cooling system issue came up early (cracked plastic radiator neck), and thermostat. never changed the water pump tho.. i wonder if it's still plastico :) transmission drives fine but when i was low on fluid it would give me a warning light. (soon to be converted to a 5-speed!!)

BTW... anyone with a 92 having power door lock/power window problems (your windows dont roll up/down) I have a like new ZVM module for sale.
For those that havent had the pleasure of experiencing this yet, let me tell you its a royal PITA to diagnose. Seems as this is one more thing inherent on 92's. Came back from paying for my gas at a gas station as it starts to rain. Go to close my windows... no dice! Long story short... I check fuses, replace comfort relay under drivers side dash, juice to the window motors (none), at the switches, juice at the comfort control relay... YES! juice out the comfort control relay... NONE.
Hmmm, since switch is new and its a relay... check third wire. The third wire was a positive ground, so when I grounded it and pressed the window switch... POWER! But why? Turns out the third wire led to the brain of the power door lock system (ZVM on a 1992) So in actuality my power door lock brain died and took out my power windows since they are interrelated!
Hopefully this will reach a needy soul out there  Contact me if needy.

147,xxx mile '92 325i Calypso Red Metallic living in the desert. Bought it almost exactly one year ago. Outside has unnoticeable dings (except to me, of course) and one stubborn scratch, but still looks good. Interior still looks okay, but panels are getting older and previous owner didn't treat the leather, its harder than a rock. Sunroof has never worked, just makes a racket!
Replaced:
-Thermostat
-Water Pump
-Fan Clutch
-Alternator
-Starter
-Front Shocks (New Bilsteins)
-OBC (Bad Pixels)
-Brake Lights
-(1) Fog Light
-Washer Fluid Pump
-Battery with new cables.
Well into its teens, but still going strong :D . A/C, seat heaters, cruise still works.
Doesn't have VANOS, but I probably would have had to replace that too, so maybe its better that way!

Black 92 325i here, 189 miles on the clock (and still ticking)
Starting to show his age. I STILL have the factory exhaust so I can't creep anywhere cause it roars. Hmmm...windows stopped working a few days ago and I have no idea why (passenger window is down about an inch and a half). I need to redo the shock tower brackets, my sunroof won't open (I miss it), need to pick up a few window switches after I fix the windows, my doors have been pregnant for like forever, I have a decent sized dent in my right quarterpanel when some mysterious person hit/kicked my car for no reason. Bastids!!!! The damn thing doesn't idle ¾ of the time (O2 sensor I believe) so I gotta keep my foot on the gas to it won't race and/or cut out on me. Can't put M3 cams in it cause we can't spell VNOS (see?) I NEED TIRES!!! I think I am leaking blinker fluid. About the only thing that works properly is my Alpine 7894 but I lost the remote one night (I have no idea how - d@mmm al-key-hall). A car ahead of me on the beltway kicked up a piece of a truck tire that knocked out my driver's side fog light - the car looks like it is missing a tooth. And the headlights are foggy as hell. And the center dash lights are out. This damn thing has got me saying "PHUCK IT - I'm buying a 540". I need the space anyway

I got my trusty 94 Accord EX with 151k miles stolen in October so my uncle sold me his for cheap. It has a new tranny and new AC converted to R134. I got it at 116k miles. Build date is 11/91 I believe.
right now 120k miles on my 325i. The car has a Dinan chip, M3 springs, 99 M3 muffler. I installed the muffler because the stock one was rusted out and I wasn't going to put a new one on this ghetto cruiser. I've got a good sized dent on the front panel from a trash bin (how it came) and almost all the panels have dings. I'm slowing fixing this car on the cheap. The only thing I've done besides the muffler is oil change with stock filter and cheap Chevron motor oil from Costco.
needs
engine electronics work (running rich o2? injector service?)
idle control valve?
alignment/maybe camber kit?
upgrade shock mounts
shocks
tires
cheap CD headunit (stock radio plays thru right side)
transmission/motor mounts
steering rack parts
interior panels (mine are falling apart)
The car is ok. It's definitely faster than my 4 banger Accord, but the Accord was in better shape than my 325i. The 325 is definitely faster and handles a lot better. If it were in better shape, then I would like it more.
The best part about this car is that I don't really care about it getting dinged. I only lock it if there's something inside to protect. I'm going to concentrate on getting the engine and steering work. Alignment would be nice because the car feels a little squirrely around the corners.
My friend has a 98 540i. When I sat in that the first time, I knew where my heart belonged. I just had a baby so we'll probably get a used 01- Volvo V70 T5

QUESTION: anybody know if the differentials, auto trannys, and springs/shocks are interchangeable with other E36s? Bilsteins for my car came had their own model #s for early 92 production models.
140k+ miles, running good. Body shop in Boston messed up my sunroof and it doesn't work completely correct when tilting. Nobody wants to work on it either except the dealer who wants to fix it for $1000.
Just retrofit with R12 after compressor failed, and it doesn't feel cold when hot, have to bring it back to the shop. ugh.
Bought Bilstein HD shocks, should have replaced springs and lowered the car and used Bilstein sports iinstead. ugh.
Drives great, a little bit of tramlining but pretty good handling and looks great.

Here's some answers for you:
1) Windows/sunroof not working - comfort control relay or ZVM moduleis shot (common on 92's) I can show you how to test and if its the ZVM (92 only) module I have a working spare for sale.
2) New O2 for sale also
3) If you want M3 cam performance its pretty easy on a 92 since the cams are "hot" to begin with. Very similar to M3. Swap the exhaust cam to the intake cam. Remove intake cam obviously. Purchase a Schrick 242 cam and insert into exhaust cam opening. Done! Same ratio as a 3.0 M3. Enjoy!
4) drivers side fog light for sale (pretty new). Aftermarket bumper with "round" lights going on so I can get rid of the fog if you want it.
Hope this helps a bit.

I've had my '92 for almost 3 years, bought it with 120,000 on the clock, mechanically was not the best but paint and interior looked great. Now it still looks good at 177,000 and I've replaced the following:
Shocks (bilstein) 140,000
Raidator 130,000
a few waterpumps in the past 56,000 miles
tranny (blew 2nd gear to bits, think it was from previous owner) 130,000
Subframe reimforcement (again think previous owner) 123,000
And the usual brakes and rotors.
This past summer I had an overheating problem and my stock motor burnt a piston at 175,000. So I installed a '95 325i vanos engine.
Electric Aux fan (cause for overheating prob) 174,000
Other than that everything I have done to the car was a mod. All in all it's been a great car, after 57,000 miles with me behind the weel, and numerous auto-x events (my '92 amazes the CCA guys at every auto-x I go to) it still looks great and now is very mechanically sound. I think I'm going to keep it until it falls apart. If that day ever comes
I recently installed 95 M3 suspension, springs and sways, and it handles like a mo-fo:bj:
I'm proud of my '92, and unless someone has an M car odds are I'll beat them.

Sorry guys, I'm really late to the party, but I have a 1992 325i as well.
Interior / Exterior are as close to perfect as your going to get on a 1992.
Mine is a 9/91 Production.
Bought 4/03 with 77k miles. I have every maintenance record, oil change etc for entire life of the car, down to the window sticker and the carbon copy of the cashiers check used to purchase her at Bayside BMW on Northern Blvd in Queens, NY.
The car currently has 82.5k miles (its not my only car)
Everything works! - 2 Door Panels are the slightest bit puffy,
Things I've done:
Maintenance / Repairs:
New tail lights (Old ones had separated and were allowing water in)
New front brakes (rotors were slightly warped when I got it)
Modifications:
17" ACS Type III replicas w 235/40/17 all around
E39 M5 lip spoiler
Painted Bumpers / Sideskirts
Bavarian chip for 402 DME
Custom CAI (on the way)
Crystal Clear corners (on the way)
Sony CD/MP3 head , JBL Speakers, JL 10W7, Sony & Kenwood amps,.
Things it needs:
New 11 button OBC (Works many but pixels are dead)
Seems to be seeping oil from the valve cover in the front of the engine (new gasket when I get the time)
New passenger side foglight (typical E36 Crack)
New window switches (all work but illumination is gone on all but pass front)
Things Planned:
Custom painted Engine / Fuel Rail covers
M3 or other aftermarket exhaust
Euro Headlights
Red / Clear Tail Lights
No one believes the car is a 1992, and it still pulls like a champ... It's my first BMW and I love it more every day.
Take care,
George

318is, 5 speed, Silver with dark grey round effects
217,000 k/m
Bought the car 5 months ago.
Previous owner said he had the head rebuilt, new bearings in the rear end, and traced down a fuel leak in the engine bay.
I have,
new pads and rotors and all four corners
new rubber
rebuilt the alternator
replaced blower motor and squirrel cages (expensive)
K&N air filter
fixed up the home for the DME.
Love the car. I also drive a fully restored 64 Ford Falcon Futura v8 so I have a car that goes fast in a line and a car that goes fast in the corners.
Plan to improve on the suspension when the currently lame Munromatic stuff softens. Have plans for some bodywork if the car performs well this winter and looks like it will hang around for a while. While I originally did not like the different coloured skirts I am now a firm supporter of the look. It looks tougher and sportier and I am a fan of the historical validity of a car so it stays.

AWESOME CAR!
New member, first post! Original owner, purchased 11/91. It's my fun car, since I own several other cars. Car has 68k miles on it. Problems have been:
Blown tranny at 51k miles. Probably due to the mods :)
Bubble in driver's, and both rear door panels.
That's it for the problems.
This is the 7th BMW I've owned and the only one I've kept. Owned a 78 and 83 320is, a 1971 2002, a 1986 535i, a 1988 M5, and a 1992 750il.
Not sure how many others have a 92 with a Dinan SC, but this one has one. I'm running with a 93 head which gives me the vanos needed to run the sc.
Love the car, and I've owned tons of cars since. Most of those are gone, but I still have this one!

I bought my lagunengrun 320i sedan 1991/06 92k miles 3 months ago and love the car to bits. M50 engine is great, runs smooth as butter. Soon I will do some maintenance like oil, filters etc. Also waterpump and the rest to be sure. Roof needs to be sprayed and sunroof fixed (replaced lifters and levers, but still problem with alignement). Replaced rear shockmounts and a lot of bulbs in the interiorlighting. Now everything works nice. Had a problem with 1st gear popping out, now I shift first to 2e and 1e, this works! Still replace it with an other box and new clutch etc soon. Brakefluids need to be changed. Doorplates get bad. But best of all, my best car yet. Drives like a dream (previous owner replaced all suspension parts) sharp steering. Mods so far:white indicators, red/white rearlights, 17 inch alpina's. Next I want to lower it, exhaust, sunroof fix and the rest.
Futureplans: estoril M3!!!! for sure.

Well I just wanted to say I have a 92' E36 325is also since I havent posted on this thread before. My car is schwarzII with tan interior, and a five speed. So far I have done the following: Bumpers painted to match the car, 95 M3 motorsport wheels, 99' M3 exhaust, euro ellipsoids with silverstar bulbs, 95' M3 LTW drivers seat. The car has 141k on it and drives great! I am trying to decide what to do next between an M3 spoiler or to redo my interior in black and modena, opinions would be great. Thanks

My stepdad and I are painting the front and rear bumpers black and detailing it next weekend. I'll take some pics once its done and lowered.

Mine just crossed the 90,000 mile mark - I bought it with 64,000m 2 years ago . Sunroof is the only thing I need to fix. Runs good but the 19" wheels are the only thing slowing me down and hurting my mpg. Nice to see all the 92' 325i. Oh yeah, unfortunetly I have an automatic and inquired about supercharging and found you have to have a standard trans. :noel:

161,589 runs well, pulls hard. 95 m3 exhaust, swaybars, bilstiens and h&r's. Only thing is the seats are getting a little beat. I also hate the suspension rattle at low speeds. I dunno what it is. Is it the bilstiens? Everything is TQ'ed down. Ah well, still love the beast.

Mauritius blue with blue interior and hands free cell phone from the dealer.
154k so far is good minor problems, nothing really bad.
I need to replace my rear door panels the leather is pretty bad.
A lot of mods FK coilovers, RD front strut bar, A&A chip, K&N intake, AC Schnitzer stuff.
But here is the question what kind of engine mods are available for a Non-Vanos?
Can I put an M3 throttle body w/out any problems? any HP gain?
What about M3 cams in a Non-Vanos?
what else?
Thanks guys.
BTW: I really good to see so many 92's in such a great shape, well done everyone!

I just got a white 92 325i with 217,000 miles on the clock for $2500! This is my second BMW and was purchased as a daily driver so that my 2000 M Coupe can be used exclusively as a pleasure car. I bought this 325i from a good friend who really took care of it mechanically but literally let the paint and interior go to crap. Nothing a week of cleaning and detailing couldn't fix though! Good thing the paint was white as now it looks really nice. Runs great, sounds great, CA car all it's life so no rust anywhere, no major damage or mechanical issues. So far I have repeatedly washed the car, clayed it, waxed it, detailed it, pulled out all the original white leather seats and replaced them with black seats (looks 100x better), replaced the rear tray with a black one, and I'm replacing all the door panels and other related pieces so they too are black. I am waiting on black door panels now (anyone know where to find some??). I also need to paint the bumpers and side skirts body color, add a BWM wing at rear, and get 16 or 17 inch rims to replace the horrible stock ones. After that I plan to enjoy it as a daily driver for the next 150,000 miles! :D

I bought a '92 325i a couple of months ago. I absolutely love it. It has 178K but drives extremely well. Engine purrs, especially at high RPM. Lot's of little things that need to be replaced or repaired, but nothing major. Please let me know how to best replace or repair any of all of the following:
1. Muffler has a bit of a rattle. Seller told me it had a pressure crack, but I don't know if that's what's causing the tinny rattle.
2. Rear suspension needs some attention, feels like a load of bricks in the trunk.
3. Many lights in the center console (around the Auto Trans) are out. It's hard to find the right window control at night, not to mention the right gear.
4. Left fog lamp is out, and I'd like to replace the headlight lens cover, it's yellowed from the sun. I think new lenses would improve the overall look. Any good part sources?
5. Bit of a fuel smell in the cabin at times???
6. Rare, but occasional burning smell coming from the vents at idle, like a loose belt burning or something???
7. Computer constanly tells me to Check Coolant, but it seems fine. I don't really know what to think about that one.
8. Sunroof rattles a bit over bumps, and headliner is getting loose.
Other than those things, I love the car. It's very conservative with no exterior additions, just black paint, black leather interior, and black windows. Very smooth.

Picked it up last May, 128K miles. immediately noticed black stuff on my driveway. $2200 later I've got a new steering rack and various gaskets and seals that had been neglected for a long time. great sounding m3 muffler. crappy front door Honda speaker mods, one doesn't even work. right front bumper damage, only visible from underneath. I'm ssslowly going over it. don't think it was treated real well in a former life but it's happy now at home with me!

Happened to me and I had a shop weld reinforcement plates where the rear end mounts to the body as it had cracked all around the mounts - look under your car and you should be able to see 3 points - maybe 4 where there are cracks around the mounts - costed me about about $400 to have the whole thing done - its bulletproof now!

Already scraping but my suspension is soft - just lowering springs from previous owner - figure the coilovers will handle the bumps better although I still have to watch how I park.
GOing to use a black mesh grill in the front on the lower bumper so you can't see the damn fan!

As seen in signature Granitsilber metalic 325i coupe(april 1992) 215000kms with LSD, climate control unit from 1996 model.
Replaced all ball joints from e30
e30 front control arms.
Replaced gearbox
Spark plugs
Chip
Smoked Crystal tail lights from In Pro
Smoked front turn signals
Bilstein sport shocks all round.
Front strut bar
Ceramic clutch
K&N filter element
Sump gurad.
Going For e36 m3 front brake upgrade
waiting for e36 m3 front bumper
OEM ///M contours waiting for summer with 225/45 r17 Pirelli PZero Nero.

I have 148k on mine, put on the contours, M3 suspention and M3 exchaust on it, replaced the waterpump and the thermostat. As much as I love the car I will have to let it go within the next month or so since I have an awesome opportunity to get an M3.

Is there much interest in S50 spec cams for the nonVANOS motor? I should have a set of them soon for about $400.

Reasons
1. e30 ball joints are stiffer and do not have dampers, so reaction
on steering is sharper, but they fit only with e30 control arms.
2. They last longer than e36 units(roads down here are a bit rough).
3. For the price difference from all ball joints I could by set of used e30 control arms.
4. The same goes for ///M3 control arm bushes - they are stiffer and last longer.

what kind of cams are you talking about? We can not use s50 cams on our 92's since we are non-vanos. If you are talking about schrick cams, then I am interested.

Wow funny to see a picture of what my car looked like almost a year ago to the date. As of my last post. Only difference is I still need to swap my sunroof...Anyone with a sedan have a working one for sale? My car also notched an extra ~17K miles more= Now at 107,000.

The cams would be stock cams reground to S50 spec, but you would have both so it would be a quick and direct swap.

121K on 2/92 production date. PO maintained/replaced all the major bits, now I'm fixing all the little stuff:
rear windshield gasket/trim
trunk wiring harness
window regulator gliders
door handle gaskets/trim
dash/console lights
brake light switch
splash panel (now aluminum)
Still need to replace rear wheel bearing, sunroof fix (no tilt), interior door panels are starting to bubble, headliner is starting to let go around the edges, and thinking about adding chip, CAI, ellipsoids...

really interested in the cams for the 92 however, I need more information. I know we can swap our intake cam with the exhaust cam and replace the exhaust cam with a schrick 242 cam.
However I never heard of what you are saying about regrounding an s50 cam??? There is no way we can install any other cars cam in our cars since we are non-vanos and all other cars including the s50 are vanos.

I am taking STOCK 92 325i NONVanos cams and will be reground to S50 SPEC. So they are not S50 cams, just have the same specs. Doing it this way there will be no need to degree in the intake cam on the exhaust side, you could just pull yours out and put these straight in.

Just hit 146000 on mine. Replaced kidney grills, all powerwindow switches, I might have a radiator problem because the obc gives me the "check coolant level about once a month. Other than a few dings and my neighbor denting my trunk when he backed up she runs like a champ.

had my beater for about 3 months now.
87k and cost me $3000 (still a student :D ) from a friend. might sound like a deal but man, its all torn up.
interior is gone. most of you have wear on the driver seat and bubbling door panels. for me, every single seat (yes, rear too) has huge rips in the leather exposing the yellow foam. literally flaps of leather. only rear deck speakers work. tires are shot and rims have rashes on all 4. brakes are done. body has dents and scratches. needs paint. sideskirts and front bumper are messed up. headlights and fogs need to be replaced. then of course i still have the common e36 problems, including mechanical. ill be doing a type II inspection soon. heres my list of things ive purchased for the car and what im going to do
-full interior conversion to lux black and modena
-infinity speakers
-acs type IIIs in kumhos and pirellis
-full M3 brake set
-M3 bumpers, skirts, mirrors
-zkw ellipsoids and fogs
-paint (maybe estoril blue :))
-transmission bushings
-shift lever
-type II inspection and tune up (which will take care of most of my problems)
it comes out to a short list but it breaks down into so much more, especially the interior. everything i listed comes out to be a lot more than what i actually paid for the car. its fun though. still doing a lot of hunting so if you have anything that you think i might need, dont hesitate to offer. even after all this im just enjoying my nonvanos M50 just like every one else :alright

i got 107k miles on my baby. (great for a 92)
now i wish i had a chick to put miles on it with her in the seat beside me....
yea im not having any mechanical problems
im just lookiing into buying a complete m3 interior.
just... i want to find a totaled one.
one that the rear end/ sides are totaled.
im thinking of going to a few auctions around here.
checking out the online car lists.
i know a few people who could help me with the interior and such.
i am getting sick of my peeling celing headliner and door panels.
other than that everything is NNNICE.
i still would love a new interior.
im working on repairing my headliner right now. but i cant figure out what to do.
i love my stock 325i. but id like it to have an even stiffer suspention.
what about body stability? does that help?
also does anyone have an idea on what suspension is a good choice for my car?... i REALLY want a better suspention and about 1.25 inches lower.

That comes out to less than 10k a year, and almost all miles are commuting miles; city (Chicago) driving, rush-hour traffic, plus a handful of autocrosses each summer. Car is *not* garaged. So I would say, I'm fairly abusive on the car (driving-wise)
- No major engine problems to date.
- Replaced front tie rods and ball joints at 90k.
- Sunroof doesn't stop when closed (goes right from tilt to retract).
- Paint is starting to look a bit dull (going to try a last ditch paint restorer, polish and wax job this spring).
- Got some rust behind the front wheels this last winter.
It's a keeper. The biggest problem (in my mind) is all cosmetic. Seeing as how it's been un-garaged for 13 years, I can't complain about the paint longegevity. I suppose even a pro paint job is still cheaper than new 3x.

I just got a '92 325i 5 days ago. I was replacing a 1989 325is after being t-boned and totaling out the car, so I decided to upgrade a body style. It's got 103k, but it looks like the transmission is going out. Sometimes, it pops out of 1st gear, but it's very unpredictable when it's going to pop out, so i'm not sure how to anticipate it. So, I'm currently looking to replace the transmission. Other than that, the cars gorgeous, with an immaculate interior and great original white paint.

I've had to fix everything but the engine itself, just change oil every 3-4 weeks. I'm a pizza delivery driver, so yes, its necessary to change that often. Car has been a dream to drive, better than brand new. Here in my town I see more 92's than 93-95 combined, must be a special year.
Dreaded subframe failure($2500), new tranny at about 203,000, painted bumpers and skirts, 20% tint, red/clear tails, clear corners, BavAuto springs, shocks, struts, control arm bushings, short shifer, shift bushings, 18" hotties, Conti-sportcontact2's, headliner, many mods to come.

Had mine for almost 7 years now. I’m on my 3rd cluster, so not exactly positive on mileage, but it’s somewhere around 200K. 4/92 prod date. Original engine and trans. Still runs great and pulls hard. Schwartz Black with style 45 rims to replace bent bottlecaps.
4th radiator
3rd water pump
Fan Delete
DINAN chip
2nd exhaust – Looking for a 3rd
Rear subframe fixed….twice. About to weld in M3 plates.
3rd a/c system
3rd alternator
The list goes on…
Have a room full of parts I’ve been ordering to replace on the car when I get the chance. Knock on wood…after I replace the entire suspension, brakes, tires and a few other miscellaneous parts I’m hoping for another 200k.

Hello All,
I just got mine it has been in a garage since it was ordered at the factory in Germany in late 91 it was shipped here to the good old USA in 1994 and has been in a garage here since then. The car came with 2 set of wheels and tires a 15" set of reg. BMW wheels with a new set of Michelin's(sp) and a 17" set of Carelly Racing Wheels with a new set of Dunlap(sp) 235/45/ZR/17 .The interior and exterior are in great shape there is about a 1 foot square place in the hood that is turning a whitish color. I think from the heat from the engine, not sure.
I have installed a Performance chip and a K&N cold air filter system going to put a cat back system on in a couple of days and change out the cams. Working on the detailing of the engine compartment. Also put a strut tower strut on last week. I would like to have put up a picture of my car but this is what I get when I try."You are currently not allowed to post URLs ... your account does not have the necessary permissions to do so."
So until I figure that one out I will have to see you guys later.

my first and definently not last BMW 92' 318is Brilliantrot 147,000 miles and i need a new idle speed controller, after the car warms up the rpms go up to about 1200 and drop to like 200 and repeats that until i give it gas, sometimes it drops low enough and it dies and i have to turn it back on. but i still love my car

11/92 w/ 151,090 as of today!
1,000,000 in planned mods, 100.00 in debt (bar tab).
I think second gear is gone, but I don't care because I'm going to keep this car forever.

92 325i, about 121,XXX miles on it (too lazy to check), 5 speed.
originally laguna green, but it's resprayed. Previous owner did not take care of it, so i brought it back to life. I'm sure it's happier now.
Huge list of maintence, i'm in debt, but at least its a good reason. I'm picking up my HP Design 18" EVO Lightning Rims on friday, they won't be on till i wrap them up with new tires.
here's the current pic. I need to find working taillights, got the obc error on mine.
