I'm trying to find out the BMW paint name or paint code with only the VIN. Is this possible? For example, the VIN I have is: wbacd3327tav17940.

i dont think the car's paint color is encoded through the VIN. why dont you just look under the hood? it should be located on the front left wheel well.

Front left strut tower under the hood. It says the color and color code. Not a super idea to put your full VIN on teh internetz either.

EDIT: You have over 4,000 posts and have been a member here since 2005 and you don't know something as simple as the name of your paint/where the name is located?!?!? WTF?!?!?

First off, who cares about posting a VIN online. Second, who cares if he doesn't know where the badge is. Did you ever think he is trying to see if the car was repainted? Maybe a previous owner pulled the tag off. Don't go jumping on peoples back without knowing the whole story.

As for VIN number lookup, I am pretty sure BMW did not include paint codes in the VIN itself. If you pull the lower back seat out, there should be a paper attached to the bottom side with more info. That might help, but once again, things like that could have been removed as well.

Yes your paint code is connected to your vin. Go down to the dealership and give them either your whole vin number or just the last 7 of the vin. And they will give you your paint code.

Paint is in the VIN. Call your local dealership, get to the parts dept.
They'll ask for the last 7 digits.

If you are facing the front of car would the left strut tower be the driver or passenger side? Thats right...

Rest assured thou noob :stickoutt. I already knew that. The BMW paint name and code are on the DRIVER SIDE strut tower. I already knew that.

I was actually looking at a car that I haven't seen before but wanted to find the exact paint code by the VIN.
Check my threads I think I know the simple things.

I'm guessing this site doesn't provide all the information behind it?

http://www.bmw-z1.com/VIN/VINdecode-e.cgi

As for the actual paint code being IN the VIN number, I doubt it. It is possible that BMW has a database of all the cars and can look it up via VIN.

Yeah, about that, it was like 2:30 am. As a general rule, anything I post after midnight should be taken with a grain of salt. I'm not the friendliest tired poster so sorry.

Also, in autobody class, I was taught that when deciding to put "left" or "right" side, you should always do it from the drivers position. Ex: A dent on the drivers side quarter panel would be a dent on the left quarter panel. Or the dirvers side headlight is the left headlight.

So the drivers side strut tower is, in fact, the left strut tower. Despite it being easier to just say "driver's side" or "passenger side". I don't write the rules, I just play by them.

One of the simple on-line VIN decoders won't get you the paint code, as it isn't built into the VIN. You'll have to go to the dealer to get it from their database.

I'm not sure why people think posting a VIN on-line is a bad idea. Lots of the registries do it. I suppose someone unscrupulous could take the VIN, fake the tags, tag an old wreck and sell it on EBay or something. Maybe there are other means of fraud? I don't know.

Just thought I'd post a pic, as I found another number on the strut tower that through me off. So for all you fellow ADHDers, this should make it easier. Driver's side strut tower, down low on the front side.470594
