View Full Version : E60 M5 - is it true -- NO CPO?

My dealership called me up because I told them if they get in an E60 M5 that is around $70K or less, that I would be very interested in it. They got one in and gave me a call yesterday. I was all 'giggity' about it -- but, when I asked what the in-service date was and the expiration of the CPO ... they said:
"The vehicle does not qualify for a CPO. BMW is not allowing us to CPO any E60 M5. You'll need to buy an aftermarket warranty for the car. We recommend Warrantech that we sell."
Is that true? Is there a rationale or logical basis? The warrantech costs around $4200 on this car. The warrantech also explicitly states that NO modifications may be made to the car, e.g., exhaust or intake. I would at least want to add an exhaust.
Is the dealership pulling one over on me?
The car has only 10K miles on it .... is that why the price has dropped so much b/c they cannot CPO it?

the dealer is correct. bmw has not cpo m5 models for quite sometime. you will received the remaining of the warranty, but once that runs out-it's your dime now. it cost too much for bmw to issue a cpo on m models, especially as you start to progess in the high mileage. 4,200 for aftermarket warranty is not bad-just imagine the cost of a new engine for the m5--the previous e39 engine replacement was 15k-20k, so just think about the v-10 model

Is this for ALL current and future ///M models or only the E60 M5?

not sure for all m-models, but for certain the m5
If you look at the BMW USA website you will find M3, E39 M5 and M Roadster models available in the Certified Pre Owned Section.

Yeah. I've worked on CPO E46 M3s and E39 M5s.

are the m5s 2003 model year-with the extended warranty until for a 100k- every dealer i talked to say there are cpo m5s out there but with a limited extended warranty up to 80k and it only covers brakes and belts.

Brakes and belts are covered by the maintenance warranty, not CPO.

It has been just recently that BMW has made it a policy to not CPO any ///M cars.

That is really unfair and does not speak well for longer term ownership.

And the lot fills up with E60 M5's with little factory warranty left and no CPO, they will either have to bite the bullet and offer a CPO (won't happen) or reduce the falling M5 price even further just to move them. I venture to say that even those who fear no warranty with that car who purchased their M5 outright will probably try to sell with warranty remaining to avoid a lower sales price.
I'm sure many M5 owners will disagree or flame me, but hey, the forum is open to opinions.
If you are adventurous, start looking for a 2006 M5 in the 2nd to 3rd Quarter of 2008 and you will find a buyer's market.

the e60 m5 is a great car, but it's very risky to own if you plan to drive it as dd and rake up some miles-Gosh I would hate to see what an engine replacement will run. Don't negate the fact that alot of the earlier 06 models were lemon law due to various problems, for which it recall some m-technican for germany to come over and solve the problems

I dont really keep up on the M5s and Ive heard a few stories of them needing new motors with lows miles. Maybe BMW has realized that many of the M5s will be needing major work in the future and dont want to have suffer the expense of handing out the M5 V10 motors. I would be cautious if your considering one, BMW likely has reasoning in their best interest.

The only V10's i've heard of being replaced were hydrolocks. With the extreme intake velocity coupled with the low air duct intakes it's not surprising to see.
The no CPO goes for all M cars, not just the e60 M5's

That's because, unfortunately, they all have a high cost of ownership. :(

So, even the E92 M3 will not get CPO'd either?
What about prev. gen M3/M5 -- for example, say a dealership gets an E39 M5 (2004), or 2004/05 E46 M3 -- they are not CPO'ing those anymore?

Lol .. you are the one that decided to do it ;) .. if you think that is expensive, don't even come into p-territory then ... will make BMW's seem cheap in comparison to own.

Cost of ownership won't stop an 18yr old with a high school education & some money in his bank account. The thinking is pretty unilateral.
I'm not surprised that BMW won't CPO M cars anymore. These engines are built with such high tolerances that I can only imagine what maintenance will be required once that V10 hits 60K+ miles.
Personally I've always thought that the V8 Kompressor Benz's were better as DD's. (& I just love torque) Now that BMW won't CPO M's it just makes the AMG's that much more appealing to me.
