Typing "1992 BMW 325 MSRP" into google gives $27k.

Adjust that for the inflated car market these days and you're left with an amount that's about the same (maybe 3k or so less) as the current 3 series.

Beemer - 2 wheels
Bimmer - 4 wheels.

I'm still trying to figure out where the hard E sound is coming from in "bimmer". Looks like "dimmer" to me.

In addition to the 328i sedan and 328is coupe, coupe, it includes the 318ti hatchback coupe ($20,560), 318i sedan and 318is coupe ($25,950 and $27,700, respectively), the 318i convertible ($32,750), 328i convertible ($41,390) and, a close cousin, the 2-seat Z3 roadster ($28,750).

There is no hard e sound, it's just that everyone thinks it's beamer because of hollywood and whatnot, honestly I think the terms should just merge and we should call everything BMW related a "beamer" because every single person I meet ends up calling it a beamer.

Yeah I don't really care either way. I call it a beamer to everyone that won't know a difference to keep the "what is a bimmer?" chat from happening.
I think beamer sonds better anyways. But take that comment to the e30 section and they'll fillet you alive.

The term "beamer" was obviously invented as an easier/quicker/cooler way to saw "BMW"... The cars carry the same name/logos as the bikes correct? So why the need for a different physical name? I don't see Honda cars and bikes being differentiated with "Honda" and "Hunda" or something similar for example! The whole thing is retarded to me. When 99% of the people out there are saying "Nice beamer," I'm just gonna nod my head in agreement instead of being a dick and correcting them. It's even harder to prove when famous actors are spurting out the term "beamer" in movies.
I'm gonna start calling mine a BEE-EM-DUB just because I'm too lazy to pronounce the only letter in the alphabet that has more than one syllable. Who's genius idea was that?

i think beemer came first because they produced motorcycles before cars then cars came along and bimmer was used for cars because (obviously:D) you cant use the same term for cars and motorcycles.

Reading comprehension owns you. ;)
I'm not asking because I don't know. My point is that telling people that "beemer/beamer" is wrong, is stupid. There's no way that "bimmer" has the same sound because there's no way you can get a hard E. I find it funny that BMW owners feel the need to differentiate between the spelling of the same word for a bike or a car when nobody else in the motorsports world feels the same need.
...and I'm out.

There is no hard E unless maybe your pronouncing it with a German accent or something. Simple english tells you that it rhymes with dimmer. After all, if you wanted to seperate cars from motorcycles, then why would you spell them different yet pronounce them the same? They are pronounced differently, and it's stupid.

Might sound retarded but that is how it's pronounced, period. Pronouncing "bimmer" as "beamer" is no different than pronouncing dimmer as deamer or dinner as deaner. Going back to my original point, why spell the two terms differently if you are going to pronounce them the same?

Surprisingly yes, just this past semester in a linguistics course. Never thought I would hear them again though. :D
My point still remains though. The two terms were purposefully made with a different vowel sound to identify and differentiate between two different objects. I highly doubt the person who coined the term "bimmer" in order to separate cars from motorcycles pronounced it the same. If they were pronounced the same, then if I were to decide to call that guy up and say "HEY!!! I JUST BOUGHT A BEAMER!!!", he would have no idea if I meant the car or the bike. And his invented term would have just been proved to be completely useless except during AOL conversations. :stickoutt

That thread is asking for an opinion on how *you* personally say it, while mine is asking for the original way that it was intended to be said. So no, not losing since that is a thread based on personal dialect.
Once again, why have two different terms *INTENDED TO DIFFERENTIATE TWO DIFFERENT MOTOR VEHICLES* if they are said the exact same? It fails at differentiating if they are said the same, and differentiating is the whole purpose of the second term. You don't completely change the vowel in order to pronounce it the same. Think about it man! It's common sense!
edit - btw the search function sucks, I searched for "bimmer pronounced" and "bimmer pronounce" and it didn't show that thread due to the two quotation marks.

or you could be normal and call your car a bmw, its already shortened from Bayerische Motoren Werke.
personally ive never called my car a bimmer (dimmer) as it's too short, i wouldnt be surprised if you said it and someone asked you to stop talking so fast (if you get what i mean)
another reason might be that they didnt want bommer, bummer, not so stylish?? hehe
since the motorycles were there from the start, they chose the better sounding name and the cars got handed secnd best.

Gentlemen, c'mon... This thread started out as a question on how much the original retail for the E36 was, and now I see about 70% of the posts are on what to call a BMW...
Bimmer, Beemer, Beamer, BEE EM DUB, etc. are all just pet names we have for our favorite brand of automobile... Such pet names are not officially endorsed by the BMW Motor Corp., though they love the fact that there are pet names, meaning there is a whole pop culture revolving around their products (I actually did a launch event that used light beams from the headlights as one of the main selling points for the concept, and guess where the inspiration came from... hint: beam?)
Seriously, telling someone that if they call it a Beamer or a Beemer then they would be un-cool is soooooooooo junior high...
