I want to swap the CD changer in my e39 with a mp3 cd changer
Ive heard rumors that the Alpine CHA-S634 is a drop in replacement for the factory changer, which my car has.

Is this rumor true? If so, how does the factory headunit handle 300+ songs per cd?
If not, are there any drop in MP3 changers?

Yes it is, I have the same changer. If you already have a changer, just drop it in. If you don't have the OEM, you'll need the OEM mounting bracketry, etc., it sells for about $30-40.
In either case, you'll 2 adapters to match it up to the OEM head unit- a Soundgate (or Blitzsafe, etc.) CD changer interface and an Alpine adapter that goes between the Soundgate adapter and the changer itself. The Alpine adapter converts between I Bus and M Bus. Due to the adapters being used, you will notice forwarding, going back thru tracks will be a little slower compared to OEM setup. Changing to aftermarket headunit would alleviate this. Headunit goes to 01 after 99 songs I believe, and I don't know if you can go backwards to access previous when it does. The changer has been great for me.
