It is getting torn apart and rebuilt from the ground up. I will post some updates as the engine progresses but this is the start. It will ALL be done by myself. Oh and the truck isn't mine, but it was really fun driving such a big machine.

Badass.....what kind of engine management are you going to be using? without a GT1 machine, it will be a total bitch trying to use anything from either engine....

I am going with motec engine management. It will be best/easiest to work with being a standalone.

cant wait to see how it turns out!
is your stock engine blown or are you just swaping it cause you want to?
M3Bmwcoupe
05-05-2005, 09:06 PM
I am swapping for the pleasure of power and speed. It is an M60 and my wheels were hand painted by myself with a can of gloss black and a clear coat, but my brake dust is corrosive and therefore eats away at the clear coat and paint.

he said it was an M60, from the older 7ers i believe......4.0L V8, just like PTG :)
i am actually good friends with this guy and we will be moving to FL in August (school) so i hope the engine is in by then!

yeah buddy. 4.0 litres and straight pipes. I am getting a 6 speed from a newer 540i to put in. I played with the idea of smg, but the programing and wiring might just be a little out of my league. This is going to be a race car, but will be driven on the street at times too......shhhhh
Engine is from a 95 740i and I am tearing the engine down tomorrow so I will post a few pics as it progresses.

What series and class do you plan to run in? There are a lot of series out there with many different rules. You may end up building a car in a catch all class which gets eaten up by vipers, vettes or you may build a car where your in a class by yourself. Just helping you out so you know what to build and what specs to build it to. Goodluck on the project

IMO, you should have picked an M62. I just hope this thing doesn't need a new block due to the nikasil in the engine, because that would suck. And while BMW replaces the blocks with other M60 blocks when they go under warranty, I have a feeling they would ask more than one question if you ask for it in an E46.

You sir are a madman and what you are doing is like the coolest thing I've seen on this forum

Here is the first thing I have done.
http://i5.photobucket.com/albums/y173/M3Bmwcoupe/IMG_0168.jpg
And yes that is oil in where it shouldn't be. The engine has a blown gasket but isn't an issue since it is being rebuilt. I am trying to keep all the wires straight so when I go to put the new harness in, I have a map of some sort.
http://i5.photobucket.com/albums/y173/M3Bmwcoupe/IMG_0169.jpg
I chose the M60 just because it is a 4.0 and I didn't want to go much bigger. I am aiming for a highreving, high horsepower engine and this was the choice. With the rebuild I am hoping to get 500+ hp.
As for racing this guy in a class, well I am not worried about that. I want to build my dream car and then I will worry about going up against vipers and corvettes. Hey maybe I could be them???

Could you please explain how you are going to make the M60 inot a high reving, high horsepower motor? The cylinder block is aluminium.Good luck!If you need any tips call Erick at Edge Motoworks. He just did one.

You'd have to individual throttle body it wouldnt you?
M3Bmwcoupe
05-06-2005, 09:56 PM
I am going to take the individual throttle bodies from the S62 and try and get them to work with my M60. Also I am going to have the cylinders sleeved along with a bunch of very aggressive internal engine compenents. And by high reving I meant compared to the 4.4. I am not looking to get into the 10 grand rev range, just something comparable to the M3 GTR.

05-06-2005, 10:17 PM
You should be doing this in a E36, and with a full S62, because I wanna know if it fits :D

How much was the engine? Hopefully the summer should bring in enough money for the swap for me, either a M60/M62 or a LS1. :D

Do the LS2's have as much potential for modding as the LS1's? I only ask because my girl just got herself a Holden with a LS2 engine in it.

I live out in Lancaster so it is on the other side of the state. If you ever happen to be cruising through town feel free to let me know and stop by. The S62 will fit in the E36. Just look at the Edge Motorworks 4.4L project. Now that would be a beast and a half.
Andrew: It would be so cool if I was still in Chicago and I was doing this. This will certainly be in before Florida. I have a feeling I am going to get in trouble with this car...

You can also find them walking all over our BMW's, with a turbo b18c1 set-up that will run high 12's for the half the price of most e36 m3's on this board... stop talking smack about something you know nothing about.
Mad props to this guy who's doing something innovative on his own, and not paying top dollar to a shop to do it for him.
