Symtoms indicate I am low so I wanted to pick up some on my way home tonight. Manual says "ATF". Any recommendations on brand, weight, etc. I would hate to have to go to the dealer for this.

Thanks,

I emailed my rep at the dealer:

You may just need fluid, or it could be the cold weather. They checked all
your fluids last time it was in. If you need fluid please get BMW fluid.

I had my oil change service last week. If I need it, kind of a pain to go to the dealer. Any off the shelf alternatives?

Yes you can get the steering fluid from Autozone.

I believe BMW doesn't make power steering fluid (only for the E38's w/CH on their bottle cover) for the ATF.

Power steering fluid is just ATF fluid (sez so on the cap) which means that any Automatic Transmission Fluid will work in it. I just get the dexron II stuf and top it off. Yea, you could get synthetic, but it doesn't really matter, it will all leak out anyway :)

My Autozone told me that E38's used a special type of fluid that Autozone did not carry and they directed me to my local Indi who sold me a quart size can of the stuff for $20. The Indi said that putting in something else would ruin the system. Who you ganna believe? '98 740iL

WOW, that's more expensive than the ESSO liquid gold that goes in the tranny!

That sure doesn't sound right...my indi put in regular red ATF when they changed some hoses on mine...and it doesn't seem to have hurt anything...yet ;) Hey, at least you can not worry about it since you did exactly what they said...All I know is that ATF is just regular Automatic Transmission Fluid (like any american car) and that's what's molded into the cap on my '97 (and the cap on my buddies '00, we checked)
