Does anybody know how to reset the oil change counter after a diy oil change so that the oil change light or whatever won't come on in an E46 325i?

Thanks in advance:)

I'm pretty sure that you may have to buy something. I am not too familiar with this because I still get my oil changed at the dealer. :)

As requested, here it is:

With the key in the OFF position, press and HOLD the trip odometer button.
Turn the key to the Accessory position, and hold it for five seconds, until any of the following appear: "Oil Service" or "Inspection," with "Reset" or "Re."
Press the trip odometer button and hold for another five seconds until "Reset" or "Re" flash.
While the display flashes, press the button again, briefly, to reset the SI.
After a new interval is displayed, "End SIA" will appear for about two seconds.

One must wait until 2.5 gallons of fuel have been used before the interval may be reset again.

I wouldn't advise doing this, if your car is still under warranty and your under the BMW maintence plan. The dealer uses the indicator to determine when you get a "free" oil service.

Problem is I installed dde's and a remus exhaust so I think that would void my warranty.

I have a '99 328i E46 and when I follow this procedure, it changes from "test" to the odometer every 5 seconds. No matter what I do, it never flashes to "reset". Has anyone else had this problem?

Lemme know if you have any problems. We live in the same town, and I have a reset tool.

I have a 2001 330i and this is exactly what i get also. I thought the 2000 and newer didnt have to use a tool, but apparently we might. anyone have any other advice (other than buying the tool). I checked online and the tool seems to run around $150. a little more than i wanted to spend on something that's only cosmetic.

I have an 2001CI build date 4/01 and the obove method works. Sometimes it takes a couple of tries though.

RESETTING OIL SERVICE INDICATOR:
If your OBC needs to be reset after completing your oil change, there are two ways. NOTE: If you miss a step, just turn the key back off and try again:

A. Model Year 1999 to Mid-2000: You should have the older round 20-pin DLC connector under your hood behind the battery terminal, you need to use a small length of wire to connect (short) pins 7 and 19 for 3-5 seconds with the ignition key in position 1 (Accessory).

B. After Mid-2000: You should not have the 20-pin DLC connector. You only need to hold the left odometer reset button while turning the key to position 1 (Accessory). Keep holding the button for 5 or so seconds until any of the following shows in the display: OIL SERVICE or INSPECTION with RESET or RE. Release the button and press it again for another 5 or so seconds until RESET or RE flash. While the display flashes, press the button one more time briefly. If done correctly, END SIA should show up for a few seconds. All done.

The only thing you've voided the warranty on is the exhaust and the headlights. Mods can only void the warranty if they are proven as being the cause of the failure.

This method works for my '01 325i. I got the 'test' message too, but then pushed the button for another 5 seconds and it went to a flashing 'reset'. Quickly pushed the button again, and walla!
