I have a 12inch Alpine Type R in a small box in my trunk. In NC now so I can't post pics but when I get home I'll snag one.

It takes up for little space and sounds great with the DSP box removed. Only thing I hate is that I have to use bungy cords for it to sit upright because it doesnt sit upright for long on its own.

I'm 21 and am tired of the thunderous sound already. I listen to a different type of music now so I'm much more interested in nice speakers then huge subs. I went through my phase when I was putting 2 15s in Ford Focus's and stuff :rofl

I'd like to see your setup. I need to have a new box built because mine is not cutting it.

not quite that easy. You just need to tap into 8 wires at the top of the amp, give it power, and viola

I don't see the point. Because the E38 is so well made alot of the vibrations (bass) don't get through into the cabin so you have the boot area being punished to have any descent contribution in your stereo system. I had a subwoofer in my E28 and it worked great but then in the E34 it was almost like there was no subwoofer at times.

Plus the most tacky thing in the world is when you see a car drive past you and you can hear the boot rattling because of all the bass. Invest in some high quality speakers. Keep your boot space.

Wrong, wrong and right.

I hate that "shake the bolts out" kind of bass where you hear the license plate rattling and you can give someone a headache from 50 yards. The basslink in my car "fills out" the sound. If you were behind the car with the trunk closed, you would hardly know the basslink is in there. However, inside the cabin it makes a HUGE difference in the quality of the sound. I've probably made 25 mods to my car, and this simple change is my favorite out of all of them. It adds what's missing in these cars. I reaffirmed this last week when I helped an e38 friend install an Intravee II in his car and we spent some time messing with the sound. To get any bass out of the stock system you not only have to turn up the DSP bass, but the bass on tone control. The later makes the sound very muddy. I'd much rather turn down that crap and let a decent sub handle the bass instead of trying to make a set of 5 1/4 speakers do it.

I have 2 Alpine 12" subs in the truck, width wise they fit perfect in a universal box. As for sound... its awesome. But you need to buy a high quality, hard hitting sub in order to get good bass effect. BMW's are constructed VERY well, including the passenger compartment. With alot of structural reinforcement between the rear passenger column and the trunk, you need a hard hitting sub to get equivalent bass loundness!!

you cant beat alpine!

I'll never forget when I was in NYC two years ago and a Hummer drove by as I was on the sidewalk. I could feel my chest vibrating with the bass as it cruised by, never felt anything like it, unbelievable!

I'll get a pic of my crappy sub i'm running, its a small Cambridge Soundworks 30w home theatre sub but it does the job.

here is a nice balance of maintaining useable space and getting great low end, and tight hard bass. This is a box I made and covered in marine grade gray vinyl. the amp is where the CD changer was, and the power is coming off the battery and routed under the interior pieces. It is grounded just above the amp.

The plan for me is 2 10's firing thru the ski pass with ports coming up the top and into the cabin as well. Amp will be a 5 channel so as to run everything. Simple, clean and enough for now.

hey guys, im installin (2) 12" clarions in my car and i have hooked up the power and ground for the amp to the back battery and bolted down ground to the trunk chasis and now im in the last step of the hookup. i have factory business cd player with 6cd changer and dsp on a 99 il. the way i am wiring the subs is using a line output converter that will convert the rear deck speaker outs into line outs for my rca's. now the method i saw online was to pull apart the cover by the factory amp and tap into the wires there but i am wondering if i can tap into the wires that are on the speakers itself. are they exposed in the rear deck? or will i have to go through tapping through the dsp amp like everyone else. also i am not sure which wire to connect the remote amp with. can anyone describe what color it is on the dsp amp? thnx for any help guys

I'm not big on bass, however I love to turn it up for those songs...

I just thought I'd add that. :D

I'm all for original specification audio systems. I'm more likely to replace all of the factory speakers with new direct replacements than 'upgrade' them. Mind you I usually listen to light classical than bass-filled 'techno' or rap, so my word is obviously invalid. ;) Especially considering my $500 home stereo lasted about a week before I unpacked my faithful thirty year old LP player again. Something about the scratchiness I just cannot describe... :)

never can have too much power :buttrock simple solution would be not turning it up all the way :stickoutt

Joking aside, Which US amps model are you using? RMS power o is that a peak number? Box configuration? You'll be fine and will love them :cool

Ive never used the Type R but I have 2 Type X 12's in my E31 and had 4 Type X 10's in my E38 before I cheaped out with Ebay taillights and flooded my trunk....amps and everything else :confused

Sounds to me like you're the type who would enjoy a properly set mobile soundstage vs typical people who just want loud and hella Bass.

Ive got very warm tube amps running at my home to play LP's...i totally understand what you're saying.

The VERY best thing you could do is to rip every piece of the OEM setup out and build a system that suits your taste.

or just go piece by piece :D

I have one 12" Type R being pushed by a Pioneer GM-8500M (1200 watts max) and im MORE than satisfied with that. I still have my DSP hooked up also and the bass is insane....Type-R is  in my book...i work at a Car audio shop, this install was rushed since it was my car and was done in 30min...if i was really trying the wires would be more hidden...maybe one day when I'm bored I'll re-do it nicer but for now it works.

I one more question about the type R should i put it in a vented box or a sealed box I mean i understand i will get a better frequency out of the vented but being that i am going to knock the metal out of the back arm rest and use that to free air into the cab which would be better.

Holy crap that is a huge box. Kinda happy that I still have a mostly usable trunk even with 2 12s.

For you JL people :

I currently have 2 12W3v3 and was considering upgrading to 1 12W7.

Seems like a lot of people online really believe in the W3s for heavy bass, with many recommending 2 W3s vs W6 and single W7 for just loud bass (not a SQ argument here)

W3s would be powered by a 500/1....W7 would be powered by a 1000/1

12" Kenwood 1500w Shallow Woofer,
1500w Monoblock SSL Amp
12" Black Carpet TRUCK Subwoofer box. ( PERFECT size for E38 Trunk )

This set up does me REALLY well, PLUS I still get to use my cargo net and rubber straps. It gives me PLENTY of Bass :)

I love the way you have that amp mounted, everything in there looks extremely clean and tight. Thanks for the pics, I think I'm going to mount mine in the same place once I get time :-)

Did you do the install yourself? if so how did you go about mounting the amp?

Thanks!

Thank You JP. I LOVE this set up....because I STILL have all my trunk space PLUS extra thump from a 12". AND I get to keep using my cargo net and rubber straps.

Yes I installed myself. Was VERY simple. Just tapped into the amp harness using the wiring diagrammed provided in a recent thread....Used a line adjuster for the input...Found an Amp on ebay...And built from scratch a subwoofer. Using a TRUCK woofer box which is nice and slim. ( It is EXACTLY 12 Inches from wall to cargo net brackets )...The TRUCK box is 8 Inches on the bottom..and 5 inches on the top..so perfect fit.

And I secured to subwoofer with Velcro ( So no need to put holes all in your car )....The 19 lbs Sub doesnt move!!!!

And the Amp is just screwed to the metal part underneath the stock woofer shelf :), using ( 4 ) regular metal tap screws! I turned it that way..because I could access all the knobs and buttons from the amp. You can turn long ways if you have a bigger amp if you want..or you can do it my way if you have smaller amp...there is PLENTY of room under there to mount a million different ways. Also....With the Truck subwoofer......It is 34 - 1/2 Inches...From Side wall to Side Wall BEHIND the Cargo net area..So you have enough room to add a SECOND 12" Woofer box if you want..and STILL use the cargo net!!!!

All the wires run UNDER all the carpeting...So no wire exposure. Luckily BMWs have Electrics and battery in same spot...Makes for a VERY neat & efficient audio setup.

Since I never dealt in audio before..I didnt really think it was gunna work...So I dint bother to do an DIY on it...My mistake....Turned out perfect I guess.

Went to Fry's and they had 2 Polk 12's in a ported enclosure for $215. It is a perfect fit in the trunk. I still have access to my spare and if fits nice and snug width-wise and has the perfect amount of space to mount the amp on top. I removed the ski-pass cover and the carpeting in the trunk so I have a nice passage into the passenger compartment. The port is right in the center so it worked out well. I'm running everything off of a Jensen 5 channel amp that has a remote sub-level control. Perfect for adjusting to different types of music. I will put up pics when I have cleaned up my temporary install.

I finally got my subwoofer setup installed today! 2 12" Rockerford Fosgate P1's & a paired 300w amp I got for helping a buddy move a year or so ago.

I purchased a 8 gauge amp kit, a stinger line level converter & tapped into the rear speakers via the 12 pin connecter, ran RCA's from the converter to my amp and there you have it!

Note: This is for a non-dsp system w/ stock tapedeck headunit, i'm using an FM transmiter for tunes until I get an aftermarket to install. I think eventually I will downsize to 1 10" woofer ported thru the ski pass, but this is nice for now .

Awesome, let me know how it goes.

With the 2 12's facing the back of the trunk and the ski pass still in, these subs bumps but I really have to turn the amp up a lot to get a nice thump in the cabin. It rattles the trunk too much and I hateeee that more than anything. So i'm thinking a 10 ported thru the ski pass will give me a nice clear bass without too much rattle.

a 6000 watt along with a capacitor
The stock alternator is 140 amps.....that's ~ 2000w total (at 14v). And the car probably eats up 30-40% of that for stuff.

Now you're left with about 1200-1400 watts. A typical class A/B amp is 50% efficient. A class D is about 75% efficient. So, your speakers are gonna see about ......900-1000 watts.

And that's for ALL speakers in the car...not just the subs...

umm....

just a heads up, sub woofers work off the fact that it vibrates and moves air wave throughout an acoustic box. some are air tight and some have holes for air to move, but both are engineered and designed using physics principles for vibrations etc; which is why different subs have different boxes. Having a sub mounted that way will vibrate the hell of of the back seat yes, but not give the sound of a deep rumble because it will not have a proper box.

I have never seen any one do this so i can't say it wont sound good, but going off the fact that subs are temperamental, I dont know how good it will sound for you. If you saw that set up in person and it sounded good then go for it, cause It would be nice to save the trunk space :)

With that being said, good luck with it!

Still got to do the sides to seal it to the contours of the firewall. No biggie. The main baffle was the hardest part. :)

Actually no. It's a relatively old Nikon Coolpix digital. But....I did get a new one just a few days back... :) A Canon D60 with a few lenses. Still breaking that one in.

You have never heard of Infinite Baffle, I take it. :) Like the M5, where they put two 10" subs under the rear deck? IB? :)

IB is one of the sweetest bass. Better than sealed or ported. But it's gotta be done right.

exactly. i had two AE IB15 15" subs that fired into the ski pass, and it was the cleanest bass produced without rattling anything. i prefer it over sealed for a SQ setup.

NegativeCamber - how did you set them up in terms of physical location and orientation?
I managed to snag the last 2 of the build.
Thanks.

good deal. yea, we have collector's items now.

this was in my e39, but its basically the same with the e38. the rear wave was completely sealed from the front wave, and i still had tons of trunk space.

this is a picture of the rear seat folded down to reveal what was behind the ski-pass hole.
in terms of cleanliness, this was just a picture i took in the process of the build. i had straightened up the wiring later.

Custom mounted Dynavin E39 radio. I will probably be swapping out the 8" Kicker for a dual 12" setup here soon.

Love my 2 Kicker 12's, would highly recommend them.

That baffle looks pretty good kapone. Lots of win in this thread :buttrock

So i've been considering porting my woofers through the ski pass and making a carpeted wall much like some of you have. Also thinking about putting some LED's in there for aesthetics. Does anyone have a DYI build they could show or give me some tips? Really my first time doing anything like this.

Just got my sub installed. Ignore the wires, I just had to make sure it was working properly before I hid them.

Some big systems on here!

Saddly mines , just a 12" in a easy to remove box, when the buggy and suitcases needs to go in the boot, amps mounted under the rear shelf.

still have removed the rear 4 sub shelf, so it gets into the cabin, as no ski hatch in mine.

I know its an old thread but I have the BSW 10" sub in my car. I removed the DSP deck, so the sound comes in the cabin through the opening that the DSP deck used to be in.

Its not crazy bass but way better then before and I still have my trunk space. Its a bit more expensive then the Basslink which I have had in the past and I loved, the only reason I decided to do this is it looked more OEM the way it mounted, but either is a good call.
