View Full Version : Acc belt and Tensioner Pulley
Update on my last thread about the belt (http://forums.bimmerforums.com/forum/showthread.php?t=1373795). Starting a new one so everyone can know whats going only.
After waiting a week to get the parts and getting a day off from work. I started working on the car today. Drained the Coolant from the radiator and the engine block. Changed the expansion tank, water pump and thermostat. put new pulleys, belt etc and started the car to see if everything was ok, the car started making noises, turned it off right away and found the Tensioner Pullyer had been melted withing 5 seconds.
Apparently, no one told me :rolleyes that the tensioner pulley unit has been changed from mechanical to hydrolic and now I am out another week plus $300 bucks to fix the dam car.
For the whole forum:
If your acc belt tensioner pulley ever breaks, dont just replace the pulley, you have to replace the whole assembly. I cant believe after this whole thread, not a single person mentioned to me that I have to replace the whole unit to this :mad

Here is some good info I found
If you have the mechanical pulley, and you just want to replace the pulley on the Alternator tensioner and the AC tensioner without buyinghttp://images.intellitxt.com/ast/adTypes/2_bing.gif (http://forum.e46fanatics.com/showthread.php?t=439006&page=4#) the whole unit, you can buy them at Autozone. Duralast Part #231133. Cost is $29.99
The AC Pulley and Alternator tensioners uses the same pulley.
They are the same as the Dayco brand ones that others have said to work. The Autozone (Duralast) brand pulley are probably made by Dayco and put in a Duralast box. They are 100% identical.
The Dayco/Duralast pulleys look exactly like the OEM ones, except they have an orange color center instead of black. The Dayco/Duralast also says INA on them, which is the same as the OEM ones.

On my '02 330i, I was able to replace just the pulley on the hydraulic assembly. The A/C belt has the mechanical tensioner, which I haven't had to touch yet.

I hear a squeal from my engine bay when I'm at low RPMs, specifically 1st and 2nd gear, but not when the car is in neutral. Once I am past 2k RPMS I don't hear the sound..
Any chance I could be having the same issue or would the pulley squeel in neutral as well...?
At first I thought it had something to do with the clutch but my car makes this sound even if I don't touch the clutch...
