Folks,
I just bought a new 2006 BMW M3 coupe with 18k original miles. It has about a year left on the original factory warranty. My question is:
1) Is purchasing the extended CPO BMW warranty worth the extra money for 4500? It does not cover electronics or navigation system.
2) Is purchasing the extended 4 years free maintenance plan worth the extra money?
3) Is purchasing the extended tire/wheel protection plan worth the money?
Thanks!
Ben

1) Yes. The extended warranty will give you peace of mind and will increase your resale value. You won't get the same effect with a third party warranty. Also, S54 engines aren't bomb proof so its important to have a long warranty period.
2) No. You can do alot of the regular maintenance stuff for much less than a BMW dealership will charge you for/charges you for in advance. It's also rewarding and fun even if all you are doing is an oil change.
3) It depends. Is the tire protection plan through BMW? Will it cover tires if you change wheels? How often can you get new tires? Also, do you have to pay for periodic mandatory wheel balancing or will they reimburse you?
I got burned by a third party tire protection plan for my 911 when it went under. I paid close to 8 grand for it and all I got was one set of tires. I'd only buy the tire protection plan if it had the full backing of BMWUSA.

Thanks guys! I love my new M3! She is gorgeous with the competition package and 19 inch rims. I ordered a Valentine-1 radar/laser detector as driving fast is impossible not to do in this amazing car. Funny- I like this generation M3 better than the new model which is too soft and not as hardcore as the last M3.

why would a cpo warranty not cover electronics or navigation? That does not sound like a cpo, it sounds like a 3rd party warranty

Every time you post I have to follow you to make sure to correct the false information in your post. Will you educate yourself on a subject before posting, please?
NOT COVERED:
Accessories
Radio/cassette player, telephone, navigation system, CD changer, or any components of those systems; non-original equipment parts, components or accessories.
They never have been. It's no secret. Not all electronics are not covered, though. Just the ones in the list above. Namely..... THE NAVIGATION. lol

I asked a question, clearly you see the question mark, you even quoted it, reading comprehension ftw, I dont recall you correcting me before, I don't even know who you are, nor do I recall you ever posting correcting a statement that I made. I do find it humorous that you thought my question was a statement
thanks for answering btw, is the regular extended warranty the same, excluding the radio/nav ?

Whether the wheel/tire warranty is worth it depends on the price, which wheels/tires you have, and the stipulations (years of coverage, caveats, etc).
If you have staggered 19"s, and it's only $100 for five years of coverage, it might be worth it... Heck, one tire with mounting and balancing could be $300+.
If it's $500 for two years... Well, then....

I've never been tempted by the wheel/tire insurance plans - way too expensive for what they are.
For maintenance they are worth it only if you would be going to the dealer for scheduled maintenance anyway. Most of us on this board know that a good independent mechanic is much better and that most regular maintenance is easy/fun to do in the driveway (M3 valve adjustment not included!).
The extended warranty is a tougher call. I would look hard at the M3 forum to answer that one. I know SMG has caused some trouble and is expensive to repair, so if you have one of those it might be a good call. CPO is a good reason to buy from the dealer though, as it seems underpriced in the cost of dealer sold used cars compared to independent dealers or private sales where you have to buy the warranty separately. Oh, and definitely read the warranty. It's not that long and it tells you plainly what is not covered. Basically it covers internal parts of the drivetrain and excludes everything that is a trim, maintenance or wear item.
06 E46 M3 Competition Package is one of the nicest cars BMW has ever made. Nice choice.

Thanks the BMW dealer quoted me between 3-5k for the 2 year extended BMW CPO warranty. And yes, my new 2006 BMW M3 with competition package puts smile on my face everytime I drive her! Most fun since driving a Lotus or 911 GT3!

You probably already know this, but just in case........The CPO continues AFTER the 4 yr./50,000 miles and up to 100,000 miles. The factory warranty should cover you pretty thoroughly, until expiration, but that 3-5K seems steep for a CPO. We bought our 2006 CPO (E90) 330i Sedan, Sport, Premium from Brecht BMW in Escondido, CA. Paid $21,800 plus the Extended Maintenance Contract. I'm very mechanically inclined, but I've got too many toys & hot rods, so BMW spoils my car (I mean my WIFE's car ). Might check with Brecht for a CPO quote.
Congrats on the M3

Hi guys,
Can I obtain a CPO BMW warranty from another dealer or must I purchase it from the selling BMW dealer? If I can shop around that would save me cash and allow me to get a good deal on the CPO warranty and extended maintenance plan for my new M3. Brakes are ungodly expensive to replace on my new M3 since I have the competition package. I called Irvine BMW and they quoted me 2k for a brake job! Inspection II is 2k. It really adds up.
Thanks
Ben

Did you purchase your M3 from a "BMW" Dealership? If so, I would have thought it would already be a CPO car. That's a HUGE selling point for BMW. I don't know if the fact it's an "M" car, affected the CPO eligability. Then again, you said the Dealer offered you a CPO for 4-5K. Maybe call Brecht BMW in Escondido & ask them for another opinion. Good Luck Brutha!!!

M3 and M5 CPO warranties are much more expensive than the other CPO warranties. Most dealers aren't incorporating them into the sale unless the customer is willing to kick in the extra $4500+/- . It's the exception rather than the rule for an used M car to have the CPO BMW warranty even when every other used car on the pre-owned lot has it.
You cannot purchase the CPO Warranty after you buy the car. You have to get it certified before you buy it. It costs $3000 to certify a M, not including anything needed to pass certification such as tires. The $3000 is what it costs any dealership to do it.
