There are many versions of EDIABAS circulating which are incomplete and do not support NCS or NFS. You need to go tp the 4shared website referred to in post #607 (page 25 of the "Carsoft Success" thread) as it contains fully functional files and INPA/NCS help files. When prompted, "INPA" is the word you need.

NCS is not able to do any coding!!! NCS was designed for bmw manufacture diagnostics which gives the manufacturer more abilities to run tests and run deeper into ctrl modules for Diagnostics etc.
for example. In the srs system ncs is able to deactivate airbags etc! (all except the driver airbag of course!). The dealership can do this with dis and sss by request and filling out miles of paper work! but they also need to purchase a dvd from manufacturer with the codes on it to do so which costs lots of $$$$.
To do proper coding you need to use win kfp which is the manufacturer equivalent to a dealers SSS. And again win kfp is a lot more powerful than SSS with extra functions!
I have a full running system with ncs and win kfp!!! :) :) :)

Hello there David Mc. I am new to the forum and am trying to learn the basics on how to setup the INPA for my 2000 328Ci. I was reading/looking through the sharing folder you have and got even more confused. I guess being new to this, is going to be a common symptom. I wanted to ask you, what exactly do i need to download to make the system work as i am mentally blocked with so much information. I do know that i am going to need a BMW 20 PIN to 16 PIN female adapter cable OBD 2 OBD2 and a USB OBD2 Vag Com KKL Interface cable for Audi VW Skoda. I will also have to make some changes in windows xp, but what needs to be installed, the INPA alone or a combination of files? I am looking to be able to scan the vehicle, get code information, erase codes, manange oil service and maintenance interval lights, interior programming and the more options the better. I would greatly appreciate some input to get me in the right direction.
Thanks,
Regards,
Mark

I would recommend that you use INPA v3.01/EDIABAS v 6.4.3 from the NCS folder. You will also need to download and read the English setup instructions. Begin with INPA and EDIABAS and you can upgrade to NCS etc later as you gain more experience. When purchasing your VAGCOM KKL interface, try and get one based on the FTI232R* rather than the FTI232B* chip as the R chip can have signals inverted via programming, whereas the B chip will need to be modified by physically soldering connections. This is a sensible place to start as it establishes the necessary baseline to allow you to graduate to NCS, DIS and SSS as you become more proficient.

Good morning David Mc:
Thankyou very much for posting this information. I greatly appreciate it!! Now, what is the difference optionswise between INPA v3.01 and verison 5.2? Also, is upgrading to the 5.2 version a matter of just installing the software over the 3.01 version? Also, there is an NCS file where i downloaded the INPA 6.4.3 software. Do this mean that the NCS software can be used together with this version software? What exactly is the NCS for? I am going to continue reading to gain more knowledge of this very interesting subject! Thanks a million.

Stick with INPA v3.01/EDIABAS v6.4.3 for the moment. Although this version can be upgraded to INPA v5.02/EDIABAS V6.4.7, the process is complicated by 2 factors, the first is that you will need to run a toolset 32 setup program in order to create folders that the later software will utilise and the second is that the later software was developed for use with WIBU security box programming to prevent unauthorised distribution, I have played around with various update editions, which will not install properly as they are missing the necessary files to facilitate complete installation. This can be overcome by running a program to unlock the software, but the program is only available in German, or using a cracked version of the software (not too keen on this option due to the possible contamination of the software pedigree during the reverse-engineering process). EasyDIS was updated in December 2005 and INPA v5.02/EDIABAS v 6.4.7 appears to have been released around February 2006. V6.4.3 will handle cars up to the E90, so it will probably do me at least for the time being. NCS is a coding program that you can install during the installation of INPA/EDIABAS which is used to alter the options configured on your car's computer modules. There are guides on the 4shared website which will give you some idea of how it can be used.
Thanks once again David. I am going to get a hold of the necessary hardware and am going to read in detail the INPA installation files and how to's to get familiarized with it, so we do it right the first time. Does the INPA enable me to change setting for example on the power door locks, windows, etc? Does the INPA do much more than the carsoft?
David Mc

INPA is a diagnostic interpreter program. It talks to the car using EDIABAS which is the protocol that can be used to diagnose, code and program your car's modules. Because it is a factory developed and used product, INPA can provide an awesome amount of information which would be hard to beat with any aftermarket product. I have heard all the rants about Carsoft, but the bottom line is that it has a place in the market for users who have limited mechanical and diagnostic experience but do their own basic servicing and do not want to be bent over by a dealer every time a light comes on in the cluster. What Carsoft can't hurt, EDIABAS can toast in a heartbeat if used incorrectly.

Hi David et al,
having read this section of the forum I got INPA 3.0.1 running and performing well:lol. Actually so well I have got into my first problem, more of later:redspot. But first some help around interfaces:
- I use a KL interface from www.blafusel.de which works perfectly with a PCMCIA serial card. (My computer ( a Fujitsu T4010) said Com1 was taken but just forced set the PCMCIA to Com1 in device manager and now it works). The site is run by a German guy who really knows his way with diagnosis, he himselves uses it for WW Audi cars but also describes how to make BMW versions of it and why it is different. He also has a shop at odb2.shop.eu where he sell DIY kits for interfaces (they build kit cost 15 Euros!) . It was very good to actually build it yourselves, I now understand what the interface is doing and why. His texts and shop is in English as well, well worth reading to understand what is going on and how to modify your interfaces for BMW if needed.
- When running INPA I actually combine first running BMWScanner 1.4.0 demo (it is for free!) to get an overview of the units including errors, then I run INPA to dive deeper and clear codes in the modules. Everything was fine until I ran a selftest of my Nav computer and then hit F7 (system something), then it suddenly wanted a software CD. Now it will not leave this position and the Nav CDs I have don't have the software it want.
I can get it to leave this screen and allow me to run the radio by doing another selftest but the Nav mode want work and main menu is locked, I can not select bord computer etc. My BMW is a 2001-08 M3 Cabrio (BR91).
Any idea what to do or what CD to get hold of?
Is the INPA software similar in function to the GT1/EasyDIS? Are they used each for different purposes or can they both be installed into a laptop and uses interchangeably? I have been reading quite a bit today with regards to INPA and now am curious with the GT1/EasyDIS.
Regards,
Mark

INPA is the internal BMW checking software, as such it is fast and efficient to check a unit and clear error codes but the UI is basic (but understandable). It has the advantge of being a Windows program. Coding has to be done with the crude NCS software, this is hard to understand, for basic coding of a unit you push a few butons but for detailed coding it uses script files that you edit and run. How to do it is described in a few docs that is part of the NCS download folder.
GT1/EasyDIS is what the dealers have, it has a more user friendly UI but is also more complicated to get going as it is a total Unix (SCOUnix) system with the GT1/EasyDIS software working as the only software running in fullscreen mode. To run it on a Windows system you need to first make an extra virtual HW system using VMWare on which you later install the GT1/EasyDIS system.
I have been doing some extensive searching to locate the Vag Com KKL interface based on the FT232R that David Mc mentioned earlier in this thread. All i can find up to this moment is the Vag Com KKL interface based on the FT232B
David Mc:
When working with the installation of the INPA/EDIBAS softwar, do i need to install the VAG-COM kkl interface drivers first and then install the INPA software or is there another order needed to follow for adequate installation. I read the INPA setup file (english) from your files, and i saw no mention of this.
Here is an email i got from a friend who told me to follow this procedure:
To actually install the INPA software and get it to work, you first install the drivers for the VAG-COM interface. Use the correct driver for your operating system from here (http://www.ftdichip.com/Drivers/VCP.htm). You have to set some options on the serial port in device manager. (right click my computer, properties, hardware tab, device manager, find the newly added COM port under serial ports I think?, right click, properties). You need to I think set the latency timer from 16 to 2. Not 100% sure on this, I will check next time I reboot into windows. Also, you must change the USB com port to com1. You will probably already have a com1 port associated with a physical serial port on your computer. Change this com port to something like com3, and then change the adaptor you just added to com1.
Then you need to adjust EDIABAS settings (the way INPA communicates with the car). In C:\EDIABAS\bin edit ediabas.ini (note the path to the EDIABAS folder may be different, i.e. it might be in some other subfolder. Wherever you installed it.). The following line should be present and not commented out (; before a line means its commented out, meaning it isnt even read by the computer).
Quote:
Interface=STD:OBD
And then INPA should work
Any input will be appreciated.
Thanks,
Mark

Hello Ferpe:
Did you use and follow the installation instructions from David Mc's shared folder? Did you encounter any slight difficulties at all or was it an esay straightforward instrallation? When it was functioning, how did you like how the INPA worked?
Will the Carsoft west replacement interface/cables work with the INPA setup?
Regards,
Mark
David Mc
03-27-2010, 11:10 PM
The main thing is to set up the interface = STD:OBD in the C:/EDIABAS/Bin/EDIABAS.ini file. I actually set up and viewed INPA before I had even purchased an interface. INPA will boot up using the latest configuration settings each time you open the program anyway. If you use Carsoft cables you will have to establish a connection by using Carsoft to diagnose a module (usually the DME), then switch to INPA so that the program recognises the interface.
Thanks David Mc. I am going to start off with the VAG-COM KKL interface cable to get INPA up and running to get a feel for this diagnostic software. I will continue to research and start with the basics on the INPA program and gradually obtain more knowledge and keep on going. I have a file full of the pdf's from your shared folder along with the INSA software. Once the interface comes in, i will definitely let you know how things go. I greatly appreciate your valuable resources and the time you have taken to answer my many doubts and uncertainties.
Thanks,
Mark

@se93,
it is a good idea to use the BMW scanner to check that your KKL interface is working (actually a BMW modified KL interface is better then a KKL=for later VAG models, see the bluefusel site why), the BMW scanner demo version (1.4.0 DEMO= the only BMW scanner version to accept an KL interface) seems to be very tolerable on the interface side also accepting that you have another Com port as 1. The EBAY INPA serial packages have a BMW modfied KL interface as I understand it, buy one of these and use the software from the NCS folder.
http://www.bmw-scanner.com/?lang=eng
The other good things is that BMW scanner gives you a scan logfile which show which units your car have and not (INPA lists all possible units and you have to gradually work out which your car has) and their number of faults (you can't view them in detail and erase them in the demo version). It will also give you the cryptic translation of the german shorthand like ITK = Instrument Cluster, SPMFT=drivers side mirror memory (screencopy the 3 scan screens and you have the translation + your cars units present, the logfile only give you the shorthand german acronyms)
Once that works you would set up INPA according to the instructions in the folder, I follwed the the instructions in the ENGLISH SETUP.pdf, it worked perfectly.
Once again the interface + serial port is the most trouble so use BMW scanner demo to check it out (it is straigthforward to install, setup and use), if this does not work INPA wont. And yes you need a good PCMCIA adapter set to Com1 (USB adapters wont work). I bought the cheapest on EBAY, PC riheral TECHNOLOGY, its second serial port set to Com1 worked perfectly.
Hi Ferpe:
I have read a few posts of people who have purchased the The EBAY INPA serial packages and have had them function well. This may be the route i will take when it comes to resolving the serial package requirement. My Sony Vaio has a serial port on it, so the INPA serial package would be a direct install with the need of any additional adapters. In this case, i would have to configure the serial port to com1 and install the drivers, right? Thankyou for the tip on using the scan tool to test the serial package before going into the INPA installation. I am going to follow procedure as you have indicated and makes lots of sense to diagnose/repair a problem with the serial package before going further and causing more headaches.
By the way, are there buffer setting or any other settings that need to be modified in the windows XP operating system with regards to the EBAY INPA serial package?
Has anyone else had good experience with the EBAY INPA serial packages that can comment on it?
Thanks,
Mark Perez

@se93,
BMW scanner and EDIABAS/INPA are both using the serial type of interface, the so called KL type (which is an interface used for standard OBD testing. It only transposes the levels of the computers serial RS232 interface to OBD standard. The other type called an ELM interface have the interface chip to ask the OBD questions based on queries from the computer, it therefore can not be used with Carsoft, BMW scanner or EDIABAS/INPA as these all require to talk "directly" with the cars electronic units).
The KL interface uses the K line for the data communication and rather unique for BMW the L line for some awakening of the units. It also uses some other lines of an RS232 interface for checking if battery is on etc. That is why we talk of a modified KL interface. Therefore bying a standard OBD KKL interface (which uses the L line for K data communiction in addition to the K line, therefore called a KKL interface) might not fit perfectly with what a BMW expects. Therefore buying the EBAY INPA packages is a good idea as these uses the BMW modified KL interface.
I did not need to change any buffer settings etc, everything was left to standard. The ENGLISH SETUP.pdf from the NCS folder on 4share (seek the post with the link) tells you how the set the PATH variable, this is the only setting to be done once you are sure you have an OK interface on Com1.
Nav problem solved;
Using INPA I somehow shot my Nav computer software, I got hold of the Nav OS I needed (in my case I have a MkIII computer/CD unit so I used V17.1) and loaded it according to the Nav forums instructions, it solved the problem. Now I need to configure the software settings=coding with NCS Expert interactive mode (all described in the folder of NCS documentation, in (I guess) a Chinese english way:) but fully understandable).
The bottom line is that INPA is not 100% bullet proof, you can screw things up a bit but I was poking around pretty agressively (to learn, and learn I did:D).

I can find no instructions or documentation for coding with NCS expert in the INPA CD folders. I wanted to add auto lock/unlocking on driveoff/ignition off.
Could somone direct me to some instructions please?

1.4 IFH-0003: Data transmission HOST/Interface failed
Reason 1: In the Ediabas.ini file, the interface is set to STD:OBD. However, you have connected an ADS connector.
Solution 1: Modify the interface setting.
Reason 2: The data transmission failed when sending (e.g. short circuit in the line).
Solution 2: Get rid of the short circuit, for example.
Reason 3: Connector not connected or no power supplied.
Solution 3: Check whether the connector is connected and is supplied with power.
Reason 4: The device manager has been used to disable the FIFO buffer for COM1.
Solution 4: In the device manager (Windows XP: Enter “Start” ; “Control Panel” ;“System”
; “Hardware” ; “Device Manager” ; Ports (COM & LPT)), and then select COM1 from the ports. Then under the “Port Settings” tab, select “Advanced”. There must be a check-mark by “Use FIFO buffers” and “8” must be selected for the receive buffer and transmit buffer.

I have a question.. I have an 03 E85 and ECS Expert works fine on it... but I have an 07 E85 that it won't run on. It says invalid module #0407 in the FA. Is ECS Expert 3.0.8 only good up to a certain date? Thanks, Chuck I

Im hiting a few weird speedbumps with this setup. I went thru and installed everything properly it seems.
I am able to the INPA side to see and read codes properly.
Once i go to run NCS expert to do some VO editing the first error i get is cannot communicate with ECU
Then in INPA running its EDIABAS not intialized and with EDIABAS running its another error
Any insight would be awesome, most of the stuff ive been going off of has been german manuals with pictures to figure stuff out

When you loaded INPA v5.02/EDIABAS v6.4.7 did you do a fresh installation or just update from INPA v3.01/EDIABAS v6.4.3 ? There are many incomplete versions of INPA/EDIABAS in circulation, some of which do not have a functional version of NCS. If the software came from China on a disk or a bittorrent site, it is probably incomplete.

If the laptop is a Dell, formatting can cause problems with INPA and DIS. Dell have lots of little "customised" drivers that apparently don't re-load and reek havoc with diagnostic software. I know of at least 2 members in Europe who have been unable to resolve the issues. Make sure that all antivirus software and firewalls are disabled.

Yes, you can make a backup of the entire car and save that somewhere before screwing around. NCS Expert can also be used to recode any module to the default settings for your VO. However, it is possible to permanently damage modules. In the case of the E46 convertibles, messing with the CVM is apparently rather risky; Snowcatxx87 fried that module when trying to code one. He's fairly knowledgeable about NCS Expert (definitely moreso than 95% of this board) so it wasn't just some noob mistake.

read each module. Then, save the fsw_psw.trc file in a separate folder and rename it to ID which module it was read from.

I know how to make it autolock after hitting 10mph, but I'm not sure about unlock upon ignition off. (I don't know if that's even possible.) I was under the impression that you can set the autolock on the newer cars right through the car's menus though... maybe that's only for the iDrive models.
For the autolock, set
VERRIEGELN_AUT_AB_X_KMH to aktiv

Thank you David that is brilliant.
I am have manage to get the GT1 software to diagnose with VAG KKL - USB modified cable.
However i am not able to code, i get the message to turn ignition on (which is)
I am completlely new to this and have just been reading all the excellent info on here.
Other than NCS is there easier software to use the will work with 2003 E46 M3?
If you could point in the right direction that would be brilliant.
Thanks,

You should be able to program your car with DIS v44, the problem is that your modded VAGCOM interface needs to be able to detect a true ignition signal - search VAGCOM in this forum for details.

Hi David
Itīs seems like you know a lot regarding the INPA and that NCS, can you tell me if the INPA you linked to here will work with an E90 from 2007? Is there a new version of INPA and NCS that is tested and will work better, you mentioned something about a new software that was missing some data to work. Has this been solved or?
Thanks for your help:)

Jacob, you need to install INPA v3.01/EDIABAS v6.4.3, then update it with INPA v5.02/EDIABAS v6.4.7 and all should work fine with your car.

I am at my wit's end.
I have spent the last four hours looking at the 4shared website, trying to find ncs expert. I even paid for a flippin' membership so I could just download the entire folder. Nothing, at least not that I could see. Info on how to use NCS is there, but not how to install or even get the files needed.
Installing it was not an option when I installed INPA (which works but won't code) from 4shared.
I have found a rapidshare file with NCSEXPERT.rar here:
http://www.e90post.com/forums/showpost.php?p=8283494&postcount=1
But I started by using David Mc and Randomy's work, so I'd rather stick with what they've used.
David or Randomy, if you're still reading these threads, where do I find the NCS program and how to install it?

NCS Expert comes with INPA. I wrote a guide about it somewhere on here.
I did searches of the Diagnostic forum, for posts by you with the keyword "NCS" and again with "INPA", but it didn't turn up any sort of guide.
If you can point me towards a link, perhaps it was in another forum?
Doing my best not to be one of those spoon-fed noobs, but my searches have been fruitless, and as David Mc stated, the learning curve on this is steeper than Everest. Thanks for the help, and sorry to be a bother; I do try to pay it forward.

NCS is part of the INPA program suite. If you download INPA v3.01/EDIABAS v6.4.3, when you install it, you just choose to install NCS as well as INPA and EDIABAS. You can download the software from this folder http://www.4shared.com/folder/3U37f2mH/NCS.html , using the password INPA and will also find some guides to using NCS in the folder.

I'm currently downloading EDIABAS/INPA 6.4.3
But I have INPA 5.0.2 and EDIABAS 6.4.7 Install on my pc. I got this one working, but it doesn't have NCSexpert. The other Install I have which comes in a .iso file have NCSexpert. Would it be ok to install just NCSexpert from this install? And the rest from the 5.0.2/6.4.7?

INPA 5.02 /Ediabas 6.4.5 is an UPGRADE that should be done to an installed version of INPA 3.01/Ediabas 6.4.3
However....INPA 5.02/Ediabas 6.4.5 offers ZERO improvement for E39 and less cars.
It actually looses some functionality.

I already have INPA and the rest of the stuff, but they are old versions and I don't have programming files (i only have the ones in Progman for up to E60 but no individual files in WINKFP).I just bought a used T61 with the software already loaded. It also has Gt1 and Progman VM. What is the best way to update everything(INPA, NCS, Ediabas , WINKFP) and if I download the files from another file share site would they just migrate where they need to go or is there a special trick to load them onto their respective software...

Which software you recommend for 08 E66?
David Mc
08-30-2011, 04:41 PM
Gmprof, I don't work on later cars as a rule, but the latest version of DIS I have seen available in the wild is v57, which can handle diagnostics but you will need PROGMAN v32.0 at least for coding and programming. Your car uses DCAN (which I do not use) and you may need to update some daten files in order to access all modules.
Guys looking for manuals/handbooks try the NCS and Easy GT folders on the 4shared site - access is as per this post http://forums.bimmerforums.com/forum/showpost.php?p=14972175&postcount=607
hello, David-san,
Thank you a lot of information. My question is...
I want to install INPA v3.01/EDIABAS v6.4.3 and I did download from your site;
INPA-6.4.3-full.part1.rar
INPA-6.4.3-full.part2.rar
INPA-6.4.3-full.part3.rar
But when I extracted part2 to \C error occured.
What is wrong and what should I do?
Regards
David Mc
09-10-2011, 11:23 PM
Just extract part 1, the file is self-extracting and will automatically extract parts 2 & 3 into the one file.
David-san,
Only ediabas-6.4.3-full.nrg was made in c:\INPA-6.4.3-full.part1(folder).
It seemed part2&3 were not extracted.
Is it OK?
David Mc
09-11-2011, 03:29 AM
If you check the file size, I think you will find that it is the same as the sum of all three parts.

Thank you.
I can install them.
