Does anybody do it? Another life time fluid....

WIS specifis 2 types of fluid - one type for when you replace the pump to fill the system and the other type for top ups.

What's funny is that BMW ATF fluid sold under BMW part numbers is only for top-ups. Part number 81229400272

From the first list, most stuff is not available in USA. Some that is or close to it:

Amsoil ASF D-21 455
Red line Synthetic ATF D-21 870

Seems like Dexron II is the type.

Here is the full list:

I do it. I actually just evacuate the majority out of the reservoir and then replace it with fresh ATF, and then repaeat a couple of times over the course of a few days/drives. It at least exchanges out the fluid. I ran it by a mechanic friend and he says he does the same thing for his BMWs. This may not be the correct method but it has worked for me so far, and is preferable in my mind to driving around with dirty fluid.

I use Redline D4 ATF.

This is the least critical fluid on the car.

Even the washer fluid is more important. Bad formulations will strip more wax from the paint. Weak or summer formulas will freeze and crack system parts.

I've read to always use non-synthetic, regular fluid on e30's, to avoid changing the consistency of the seals. "High mileage" fluids add seal softeners and swellers, while synthetic fluids can have similar effects. But the seals on e36 generation steering racks never seem to have problems.

it was one of my first mods :redspot i think that PS fluid and the whole PS system is the most neglected system on a car. Did you know that ATF fluid much like brake fluid attacks water? that being said just like your brake system (which many people never change this fluid either) is very susceptible to sledge build up from rust. so i simply cannot agree with you that washer fluid is more important (then again i have less then half a L in my car at anytime because i simply dont use it.)

anyway, change your power steering fluid like you would change your brake fluid (no less then every 2 years) :buttrock
