I've got an 1998 540iA. I don't know what month it was manufactured, and I understand there were two engines made that year. I'm sure there's a way to tell but I don't know what that is. Any advice?

You mixed up those codes:) B35 is for 535.Probably you are wondering is your engine m62b44 or m62b44TU.In 1998 m62b44 was replaced by m62b44tu.It had vanos or double vanos, don't remember exactly:) try to write a letter to official bmw dealer with your VIN,maybe he'll give you some info:)

do you really NEED this information?
If not, forget about it.
If so, go to the dealer.

Are you implying there is zero difference in the two engines' design/layout and therefore maintenance approach in certain situations?

You have an M62B44, the B35 is a euro-only engine. As to whether you have VANOS or not, it's easy to figure out. The M62TUB44 has a fly-by-wire throttle. Take a look at your ITB and look to see if there is an electronic wiring harness connected to it. If there is, you have the TU.

what are the implications in terms of doing work on the car / diy maintenance if any between these two engines (TU vs. non-TU)

1. I've got an 1998 540iA.
2. I don't know what month it was manufactured, and...
3. I understand there were two engines made that year.
4. I'm sure there's a way to tell but I don't know what that is. Any advice?
The fact that you know your car is a 1998 540i means that it has the M62 B44 engine (which is neither of the numbers you posted up).
You should have a VIN label on the driver's door jamb and the car's production date should be on it...look at the upper right on the label that also has the car's VIN printed on it....you'll see the month/year.
In the "1st half of the year" the 1998 540i & 740i/iL got the M62 B44 engine...and the latter half of 1998, the M62TU B44 (single VANOS engine) was rolled out in the debut of the 1999 model year in the 540i/iT, 740i/iL, and X5 4.4 BMW cars/trucks.
If your car has a W as the 10th digit of it's VIN then your car is officially a 1998 model and your car will have the M62 B44 engine...if your car has an X as the 10th digit of it's VIN then your car is officially a 1999 model and your car will have the M62TU B44 engine (single VANOS)
The B35 or B44 represents the engine's liters...so like someone already stated...the M62TU B35 means that is would be an e39 BMW 535i or e38 BMW 735i (neither which were sold here in the USA). And the M62TU B44 would be the e39 540i/iT, the e38 740i/iL, and the X5 4.4.
last 7 of vin are... bw60055
You can use any of the online part databases (which allows you to enter the last 7 digits of your car's VIN to find parts specifically for you car) and they will give you the production date of your car once you've entered those lasst 7 digits...give it a try:

The implications are that the M62 and M62TU are slightly different engines and that some engine parts and systems are NOT interchangable. Thus when buying parts...make sure you follow the mfg date of your car and the parts you are buying.
Like others have stated...the VANOS engines in the M62TU are drive-by-wire...so there is no throttle cables...the throttle butterflies are electronically activated. This means there's no throttle cable attached to the accelerator pedal on the "TU"...it has a potentiometer below the pedal instead of a cable. Little things like this is what is different and you have to be cognizant of when working on the car and replacing/buying parts.

I was seriously asking.
Because if you did, I could have gone into further depth trying to find out
