earlier yesterday i was driving back from ft.worth.. had been listening to music for like an hour at most that day in my car, when all of the sudden my front speakers just stop working, i could still hear my sub though... when i got home i popped my trunk and looked at my amp, and the red "Protect" light was on... so i figured maybe it overheated? i let it cool down for 4 hours exactly and turned the car back on and it instantly had a red light again. :(

the strange thing is, i've had this amp and the front speakers in the same setup for more than a year now, and i've taken it on roadtrips where i'd blast the music loud for 3-4 hours straight and never had a problem with this amp or the speakers, and the amp would be HOT after that. yesterday though when i felt the amp after it stopped working it was just warm.

it's a Power Acoustik 2 channel amp (for just the fronts) 100 wattsx2 at 4ohm, the front speakers are infinity perfect 5.1s which require 100watts rms and are 4ohm..

i pulled inputs out of the amp and the speaker wires so i could just plug it into the battery and ground (and i checked those too) but it still did the same thing :(

thanks for any help!

Did you set the gains properly on the amp? What guage power/ground wires are you using. Sounds like it's died/dying, sorry, hope it's not. Check for shorts in the speaker wiring, had a similar problem one time.

:( dang, that makes me sad...

yeah i did double check to make sure i had everything set right, and i just tested it in a friends car (just incase) where his amp was, with no luck...

looks like i'll be in the market for a new 2 way amp soon.. thanks for the help though

The protection light is usually for speaker shorts. Try disconnecting one speaker at a time and see if the amp comes on. Then check your wiring & speakers for shorts.

EDIT: I just saw you tested it in another car. It sounds like you need a new amp.

The protect light is there to prevent the amp from actually getting ruined, but that doesn't rule out the possibility that the amp can still die from speakers shorting.

Same thing with surge protectors for the house, they are made to withstand and regulate common house surges, but overtime, the constant electrical surges will eventually cause the unit to fail.

The protection light on an amp is not like a home power surge protector. It is there for output shorts and overheating on some models. That's all it will protect. It has nothing to do with power surges.

thermal, power(too high or too low), and shorts are what usually kick em into protect, its not there to prevent failure as much as it is to let you know there is a problem before its too late, which in this guys case it sounds like it already it

it is time to have it repaired or replaced (maybe an output device went Kaput).
