So yesterday I painted the ///M3 bumper I bought from DDM. Overall I think the result came out great.
No wet sanding required
Color: BMW Schwartz Black 086
Paint gun: Iwata LPH400
Settings: 27 PSI with trigger pulled, 5-6 inch from the panel
Base coat: Dupont Chromabase
Clear coat: Transtar Euro Clear 7021 and slow activator, reduced by 10%
Pics:
Looks pretty good from here.. now get that thing installed and lets see how it matches up with the other panels.

Rattle cans ahhh i remember the days of having a black car...
Going to paint the trims and install the lips tomorrow
looks amazing! What type of compressor, filters and regs are you using?
Nice...I can only wish of having painting tools like that...that's what paint shops are for!
Very shiny! I approve.
I work in a repair shop. We have this 2 stage 5HP 80(??) gallon compressor no the air quantity in not an issue. Specially with a gun like Iwata that only uses 10 CFM.
For filter, I have a Devilbiss HAR-602 that I bought used local from someone and changed the filter element. http://www.autorefinishdevilbiss.com/products.php?pg=95
It didn't come with the regulator, so I use a cheapie Harbor Freight regulator at the wall and it works just fine.
I use a Iwata 8005A regulator at the gun.

Got the fender today, will be painted this weekend along with nose panel.
Should I paint the bumper lip matte black or leave it as it is? Any suggestions?
matte
I just order a bumper from DDM as well and my local body shop (where I also have known a guy there for like 10 years, famil friend) said that it would be like 350 to 400 to just paint the front bumper....RIDICULOUS!!! Does this sound right??? Can i do it myself for cheaper and look just as good, keep in mind this is the best shop anywhere around IMO and I wouldnt trust anyone else with my car. So if I dont do it they will....
$350-$400? Damn that sounds too high.
I had my hood painted painted by BMW dealership last year, they charged $300, they did a nice job and used Sikkens. This is Canadian pricing so U.S. might be cheaper.
Maybe the body shop uses super expensive paints like Glasurit? (Although Sikkens is also pricey).
Shop around I am sure there must be other body shops that do decent work.
As for DIY, I assume you are going to use spray can paints. In this case, I wouldn't do it. Those paints have no quality or a decent resistance against sun or chemicals and they will loss their gloss over time.
ooh, I can see myself.
350-400 is definatly too high. I Just got my ddm bumper painted 3 weeks ago and i paid 200 even and the guy is reallly good, paint matches perfect and he spends most of his time doing show quality frame off restorations to muscle cars so you know theres some skill involved. To the op bumper looks awsome. Its like a mirror lol.
Hey JH.....how long did it take you to get your bumper??? From the day you ordered to the door step??? Just wondering cause Im ass u me ing that mine is on back order.
