What oil meets BMW Spec's? What oil should I run?

The original thread somehow got deleted. Original thread also had a pdf with other oils in it that I no longer have.

It's a bit date and doesn't cover the LL-04 spec. If someone has a newer version, please post it.
Nice! I've attached to original post and give you credit.

We can drop all of the Elf Oils from the list as Elf was bought out by Total and has transitioned all of the Elf oils into Total Oils.

    Hi Jared,

First off, thank you for starting and maintaining this thread - I've referenced it a couple times over on www.m5board.com.

A quick question: where did you get the above list of approvals for Motorsport oils? I have no doubt that it is right, but have never seen such a reference, just the usual LL's.

    Thanks!

    Hi Doug

Thanks. I'll have to check out your thread as well.

The Motorsport items were actually posted by someone else on this board. I had another thread like this that was eventually merged with other threads. That thread was replied to by someone with the Motorsport items.

I'll see if I can find any more info on it.

    Thanks!

Appreciate the quick response - you won't a specific thread from me, just references to this one when people start asking the ever popular "What oil should I use?" question

I'm very interested in the Motorsports reference - I've never heard of it, just the LL ratings.

    Thanks again!

    Doug,

Its actually right on the back of the bottle. I am the one that reference the BMW-Motorsport specification. If you look at the back of the Elf or Total bottles it says "meets or exceeds BMW Motorsports Specifications."

I'm guessing my local JiffyLube-type place won't have what's needed for my 528i? No big deal, I can do it myself, just curious.

I would not take my bmw to a Jiffy Lube even if they did have the proper oil for it.

where can you find Mobil 1 0w-40. None of the autozones/walmarts have them in my area. Any good place online for a decent price?

Army, if you have PepBoys near you, you could check there. AdvanceAutoParts would be another place to look.

If you trust those places you can carry your own oil in. I have customers who use Amsoil but don't like to change their own oil. They carry their oil into Walmart and pay them $10 to do the change.

German Castrol is good oil. Supposedly it started to show back up on Autozone shelves but I haven't checked lately. I hadn't been able to find it for quite some time.

What about Royal Purple? I see people use this in many track spec cars, and i used it on my Infiniti's big V8. But never heard of the name around Euro owners.

Thanks Nick - I was asking because I looked on their website and didn't see any mention of it. I figured there must be info somewhere!

Good tip, thanks. I'll probably just do it myself anyway, I like to spend time in my garage.

Its ok but overpriced. Their syncromax stuff is good for tranny shifting. A lot of us run it.

Their oil drums used to be pretty dirty. I'm not sure if they have cleaned it up or not. When I saw that it pretty much convinced me to not run their oil.

I thing better oil can be had for less money.

    Ok, seriously, this isn't funny:

From here I clicked engine. What I get is:

Synthetic technology lubricant developed in order to meet extreme usage conditions during competitions. Perfectly suitable for all Gasoline and Diesel engines.

    • Excellent resistance to very high temperatures
    • Great protection against wear
    • Very good resistance to oxidation.

    API SM / CF
    ACEA A3/B4-04

    • Referent engine oil for PEUGEOT SPORT and CITROEN SPORT
    • SUBARU (Level)
I see no reference to Porsche or BMW Motorsports. Further, when I open the link to the spec there is again no mention of Motorsports or Porsche, only Peugeot and Subaru. I've attached the product spec sheet here for reference. 1177.pdf

Don't know why they wouldn't have the approval in their product sheet, but it doesn't exactly instill confidence.

    Doug
