VW mass air flow sensor on 540i

I heard that a vw maf would work on a 5 series before. Does any one know the part number of vw maf that will work. The guy at the dealership said there is two different ones and I dont know which one to choose. Any help would be great.

Not sure about VW, but I heard the Land Rover one is cheaper than BMW too. Especially since the 4.4i is used on the Range Rover Part Number: B3130139283. Keep in mind this is for Post 98 540i only. If your signature is correct, 2000. It should fit.

Here's another thread about it: Different part number though

Is it still cheaper ordering from Canada with the weak US dollar and customs duty?

One brother in-law has a 98(or maybe it was 99?) Land Rover Discovery 4.0l, the other a 99 540. The sensing elements themselves, not the housing, have the same Bosch part number. I think the Land Rover sensor is purchasable without the housing. Even if it isn't, you can always swap the sensing element to the BMW housing. The Land Rover part was oodles cheaper, I think around $150. Just another option...

I was wrong on the year, 99 Discovery II.

Looks to be Rover part number ERR7171. I'll try to get a hold of my brother in-law tomorrow for the Bosch part number.

NO! The VW sensor itself does NOT have the same part number that the 540 or the M5 has for that matter and the 540 and the M5 use the same sensor. The number 06A906461A is the correct number sensor and tube assm you want to buy. Save your currency conversion decisions as you will save practically nothing. You can buy from US sources for $89 US as well. When you remove the sensor itself from the housings, you will notice your 540 has an 032 last 3 numbers and the VW sensor is 029. NOT a problem. The sensor will work, but it is NOT the same number. The VW sensor will run a tad (3-4%) richer than your OEM BMW sensor, but I don't think it is important as the O2 sensor should adjust quickly. I just wanted you not to be surprised when you actually have the guts side by side and the sensor numbers are not the same. You will neel a torx security bit to get the sensor out of the housing or a dremil tool where you can cut a slot and use a regular screwdriver. This info is courtesy of a UK forum friend who works at Bosch and knows what the hell he is talking about. Use the search fuction.

As I understand, this option is only for post 98 cars. Will not work on 97 and 98 540is. Those of us with 97 or 98 have no options but the BMW route. Unless your friend at Bosch knows otherwise.

Unfortunately, I believe you are correct. A VW swap for pre-'99 cars has not been found yet...sorry.

thanks everybody for the input but is there a hi-flow MAF that is sold by a tuner that would be more reliable and an improvement at the same time?

I just installed the VW MAF sensors in my M5 and it runs great. I got them from Canada for $207 delivered. If I would have known of the place mentioned above, I would have purchased from USA.
Sometimes its better to make a good run than a bad stand.

    Thread revival!!

How's that part number working out for you? I've got no issues, but figured I'd replace the MAF for the hell of it in my X5 4.4 and I'm still on the fence if I should go w/ the RR, VW or stick to the overpriced BMW version....all Bosch of course.

i just got a bosch MAF for the M62 from AutohausAZ for $130.

for that price i did not see the reason to risk doing something other than correct MAF.

why the huge discrepancy in price for the MAF sensor. I see it listed online from $60 to $400+?

For $130 I think I'll stick with the OEM maf.

Sometimes the price quote is for the MAF + the housing. That can be the reason for the big variance in price.
