    Question OBDI or ODBII????

I am going to look at a 1998 540I tomorrow for a forum member. I need to know if I can use my OBDII diagnostic scanner on this car. Thanks...

The answer is "yes", (I think). My Mom taught me to always say, "I think", just in case.

"I think" every car 1996 and up sold in the US is OBDII.

Every car in the US 1996 and up was indeed required to use OBDII.

What I'm not sure of is if all OBDII diagnostic ports are universal or not. Probably, but I'm just not familiar enough.

Before my 540, the newest car I've owned was my Corrado, and that was OBD exempt.

The 98 540 has an OBDII 16-pin Diagnostic Link Connector (DLC) under the driver's side of dashboard and an OBDII 20-pin DLC in the engine compartment. Both are universal.
Starting with the June 2000 E39 production, the 20-pin DLC has been deleted.

I am familiar with the cockpit DLC. Where in the engine bay is the other one located?

Now that I think of it, you have a 530, so the DLC might be in a different location for you.
Nope. Looks like it is the same.
