Please, No More Threads About Offset

Seriously, how many threads do we need about people asking about offsets?

    Non-M:

    41 front
    41 rear
That's one of the sorta' de facto standards for non-m cars. Z-stars, which most pre-4/99 cars came with have an offset of 46mm, so that's a sorta standard as well.

I guess everyone knows this as well, but just for completeness, 5x120 bolt pattern on all the Z cars.

Yep, that's been a 5-bolt/lug BMW standard since the 1960's. Only the four bolt wheels are different. The hubcentricity of the wheels are the same too, EXCEPT for e39's. For some reason, some genius at BMW decided that the e39 needed a larger center hub boss. Goofy barst.

Here's a picture of my '72 CSi with 16x7 (offset 20mm) e39 Style 32 wheels with 225/50-16 AVS Sports on it. Fit like a charm.

The one thing that's different about the CSi is that it has lugs, not wheel bolts. I never needed the hubcentric adapter rings to use the e39 wheels on it, the nuts seem to pull the wheels on straight. While, on the e28, I always had to use the rings to avoid off center shakes. Then I learned about making the hubcentric adapter rings of of beer cans, but that's a digression.

The question is usually not 'what are the offsets', its usually, 'will these wheels fit'. Maybe it would be more useful to list the offsets of some wheels that press the bounds of what fit. Its hard to find wheels that fit the M's, so its more useful to list what works, not what is stock.

Before I forget, sticky might be nice for the offset calculator. Maybe put it in a single message titled "Wheel offset calculator", put the various standard offsets in the message body, then lock it.

Offset is relative to wheel width.

i have to second that - i mean, i'm interested in what window of offsets would or wouldn't rub and what spacers would be needed to change the look if i want aftermarket rims.

can we get "suggested" windows of offsets?

Maybe keep bumping this thread so it stays at the top? Noobs or people that don't post often seem to be the ones that miss these "No more questions about offset" threads.

What you need is a sticky thread with a title that's helpful ... like "wheel sizes that fit"

Here's some more info and calculators. It's nice to know what sizes work, but to determine if [insert size here] will work, you'll more than likely have to take some measurements to find out.
