OK, I ran a search and didn't see anything along these lines so please feel free to share your experience.
After TONS of research and looking at the M5 and 540's, I finally decided on the "lesser" of the two (if you can really call the 540 a "lesser" ride). The guy, who had the one I wanted, was asking $14500 and I scored my 2000 540iA Sport with 94k on the clock (in August 2007), for $13700. I walked out the door paying a total of $15k including taxes and licensing. So far I've put about $1500 into maintenance (complete inspection, aux water pump/heater valve, valve cover seals, plugs, e-brake, instrument cluster) and she runs great! No shake&bake and more power than you can shake a stick at with spare power to go. After the initial expense, I've had zero real problems with her and I just rolled 100k last week. I've said it before and I'll say it again...I LOVE my 540iA!

I've purchased my E39 540 back in 2002. It had 9,000 miles and bought it for $41,500.
Since then, put a ton of money into it and now just rolled the 92,000 mile mark. It runs as strong as ever.
For 3 years it was my daily driver and really loved it. I dont get to drive as much as before, as I have two other cars. I might put it up for sale, i dont know...

I bought mine in October 2005 when it was two years old, in mint condition w/ about 15k miles on it for just under $38k. Original sticker price was $60,000+.

I purchased mine in January of 2007 with 93k miles for just over $10k. It already had a sport suspension and M5 rims.

I paid $24K with 36K miles on it. This was a couple of years ago. Now it has 62K on it. It sure is a fun family car.
i paid $32k almost 3yrs ago wit 30k miles..01 sport, 6speed, white on black, with navigation. the car was stock and i believe this color combo with these options is impossible to find

13K with 60k miles about 2 years ago for my 2000 528i Sport I would've paid more..

'97 540iA paid $12k, purchased in 2005 w/ 99k miles from orig ownr.
$5k spent in tires, repl. water pump, hoses, t-stat, MAF, plugs, rear diff fluid, brake fluid, steering fluid, front fog lights, re-upholstered seat backs & battery. Still on orig. tranny fluid - shifts like new.
Very clean. Interior in great shape. No issues.
Purchased 02 E39 530I (sport, premium packages, 5 speed manual) in 04 for $25k with 36k on the clock.
2002 530IS 5 speed, Sapphire Black/Sand, M-Tech sport package, premium package, ESS Twin Screw supercharger, Southbend high performance clutch, Performance Gearing 3.15 LSD.....1999 M3 Cosmos Black/Black, Active Autowerks intercooled supercharger, H&R suspension and a bunch of other stuff....
