Thumbs up ESS TS2+Sachs clutch...First test run

I finally finished the break in of the ESS twin screw supercharger on my 02 530I. Yesterday I finished the install of a new Sachs PCS organic clutch rated for 500hp. Today was the first time I got to try out both together. I cant believe the torque this thing is putting out now! I had a friend following me in an older Audi A8 (he wanted to see if he could keep up...LOL). After we stop at a light I take off in first, just a normal release, after I am rolling at about 10-15 mph, I tromp on it and I light off the tires, I had to back off as the revs quickly climbed to 7,000 before I could get into 2nd. I will have to do a couple of clips. What a blast

you installed the blower yourself correct?

That is one nice looking setup and it's great to see other s/c options out there for e39s, especially roots type.

Yes, and I have the ice picked hands to prove it! I even took a picture of my hands against the blower when I was done. The twin screw and the Sachs clutch work really nicely together.

    Sweet!

That is a more than viable option to the M62, and arguably more reliable as the I6s seem bomb proof anyway. I'd love to see some dyno results, 1/4 mile numbers, etc. Nice job!

Search for ESS Tuning. You will find them. I believe they are European based, but have a distributor in the US.

Let's dust off this old thread...

It's nice to hear that the 530 can thrill like this. I have had my 02 530i for almost a year. It handles great but I would like some more ponies to play with (naturally). The ESS supercharger seems to be a great way to go. I did a quick calculation and it appears that the 530i with the ESS SC has about the same hp/weight ratio as a stock 540i e39.

How did you make out in the long run? Has SC and the engine in general been reliable? How was your mpg affected?

You listed your SC as a TS2. When I looked at the ESS web site last year they has TS2 on their site "under development" and TS1 operating at 6psi boost. I checked back recently and see that they offer only TS1 at 7psi. What boost is yours operating at?

It is interesting that the stock air box was used. I thought for sure that a CAI or short-ram intake would be a natural match.

BTW, this makes your car a decent sleeper. I'm sure you have surprised a few folks...

This car is a daily driver and I have 30,000 miles on the unit since I installed it. It is very reliable and my in town mileages are 20mpg and 25-26 on the highway (unless I am cruiseing at 120-130). The level of boost I am running is not a problem with stock internals and the I6 loves it.

The TS2 has been available for the E39 I6 for the last two years. They dont update thier website much. My TS2 system is developing 8.5lbs of boost and it kicks on at 2200 rpm (full boost at 2200 rpm).

I use a stock airbox for a couple of reasons, I live in Houston where flooding is a seasonal issue and the stock box is much less likely to suck up outside water than a CAI is. It would also void the ESS warranty if I use a CAI.

Yes, I have surprised a whole lot of people, it makes me smile...

Is this worth it for an automatic? What about the VF engineering unit? Which is better?

IMO, it depends on how much you want to spend.
As I recall, the VF is $3500 for the stage 1, however, the VF does not come close to the amount of torque the ESS twin screw puts out.

I think the ESS TS-1 is approx. $5000-$6500.
I have heard that the ESS TS-1 is best for an automatic, because the it does not have the amount of boost to hurt the transmission like the TS-2 does.

Looking for an E39 belly pan , passenger front inner fender liner …

thanks that's great advice. The VT is now 5000 retail and 4000 with some finagling. That price range is still too rich for me after a 3k suspension upgrade, new acs wheels, re01s, reserve coolant & power steering tanks...

does anybody ever get reconditioned ESS SCs or sell them 2nd hand, and would you recommend that on the cheap? Heard horror stories for cheap new ones but not sure otherwise.

to think, a year ago I was driving a toyota now I'm hungry for more bimmer hp. Its addictive!

    Here's a question:

What about the ESS twin screw for a automatic 525i coupled with a custom limited slip diff. like Gumbi has....would that put out a considerable amount of horses and torque to the wheels?

Used ESS units (especially the twin screw are going to be extremely rare) but if you look long and hard enough you might get lucky. If you are going F/I on the car an LSD is a must to get the power to the ground. I have been running a 3.15 LSD from Performance gearing for about a month now and the performance (especially cornering) difference is amazing.

Yes, but I believe you would be limited to the TS1 system (6 psi boost) in order to allow the transmission to survive.
