WOT... Urethane epoxy garage flooring

To redirect this topic if anyone was interested, I've become a distributor and installer for Epoxy Garage Flooring.

This is an aliphatic urethane epoxy that is UV stable, highly chemical resistant, and just plain looks great. Multiple color base coats are available and a huge number of chip colors are available for custom mixing, even glow in the dark and metalic chips. Contrasting colored borders, stripes, or logos are also possible, you could even lay down a BMWMOFO decal and clear coat over it, designating THAT spot in the garage for MOFO parking only... HA!

This system can be adjusted to meet your budget. For instance if you want the cheapest way out and get a good color coating on your floor it is possible to just put down the base color coat which has a shine of its own. I did this in the stock room of my wifes store, on the concrete floor and cinder block walls, it looks clean and bonded fine.

Or you can go full out like I did with my garage. Primer coat, base color coat, color chips, and then clear coat which is more expensive but still not outrageous.

For my MOFO friends I can install or help install this flooring for the follwing prices and other options that fall in-between....

Basic floor prep (shotblast) and base coat color application.... $1.00/sq-ft
Full tilt prep, primer, base color, chips, clear application..... $2.50/sq-ft

Everything will have to be cleared from the garage floor which is a job in itself, after the floor is cleared oil spots will need to be treated, then the entire floor has to be etched with acid or a mechanical blaster. Pressure wash. Allow to dry overnight. (end day 1)
Apply color coat next day (basic application) and allow to cure for 24hrs before foot traffic. (end day 2) 5-7 days complete cure before you park a car on it again.

This upgrade to your home is sure to increase your resale value and buyer interest when it comes time to sell. After all, she gets to decorate the rest of the house, why not spend a little on your room right?

Man that looks nice.. I've definitely considered a garage floor coat to increase the perceived value (or real value, whatever) of our house when we sell in several years. It's pretty small and there isn't much surface visible with cars in this house, though so I might have to cheap out and do the real deal in our dream home.

Stan, with the additional cost of a round trip ticket, and 3 nights at the Wynn, I'd be happy to come to Vegas. Oh, and if we can schedule it the same week as SEMA it would be a plus...

Dan,

I dropped my socket wrench on it the other day and it did not chip. The more layers that you build up the better chance it has to give and absorb the shock of dropped items. That being said, it would still be a good idea to put pads under your jack stands. Clean up of oils and chemicals is a snap, it completely seals off the concrete so nothing penetrates.
There is a way to tear up anything if you try hard enough... ha! This is an industrail coating used in manufacturing facilities, it takes punishment of heavy forklifts and floor jacks all the time. No hot tire pick up like some of the coatings you get from local home stores...

Sweet...Thanks. Without measuring, I wonder how many square feet a normal standard size garage would be.

Average 2 car like you have shown in your sig is around 20' x 20'. Mine was a bit smaller and only 18' deep. Count on 400sq ft for a two car garage.

Speedster,
We can put a basic one color finish down for $400. This includes prep work after you clean out the garage.
Other options can be added from there. Such as:
Primer (aids adhesion)
flake chips (makes it look like granite as in the pics above)
clear coat (extra shine and added depth and protection)
No slip additive (cheap and worth it)

Jed,
Yeah, if you want to add those pics and contact info that would be great! Much appreciated!

Does the garage floor need to be over a certain temp for better bonding?

I did an epoxy floor with cheap stuff from Wal Mart a few years back. House was fairly new and I didn't do much in prep work. Thought it looked great but eventually started coming coming up where the wheels were. I scraped away the portions where it was coming up and re surfaced but the new stuff comes up even worse. I realize now that it will take a shotblast prep to sufficiently clear up whats down there now.

My problem is I would be looking at 600+ SF (3 car garage) so even as good as your prices are, it's not exactly small change for me.

Sooner...
This is definitely an expenditure that is hard to justify, unless you factor in the idea of increased interest and percieved value when it comes time to resell, a clean well kept garage might just be the key to locking in that picky buyer down the road. I agree its not chump change for anyone and it can be done in sections if its easier to just do one bay at a time (the idea of cleaning out the entire garage can be ominous).

It is suggested that this urethane be applied at or above 50 F. That being said, there are additives that will extend that range down into the upper 30's and still allow to cure out. Acid prep or shot blast is the key to adhesion. I acid prepped my entire floor and it was a huge undertaking, lots of scrubbing and power washing and the concrete is only 2 years old. I think the best, quickest, and most thorough way to prep the floor would be the shot blast machine. I am doing a floor in two weekends and plan to use the shot blast method for prep. I'll take plenty of pics on this project, it will be a two color floor with a dark border and lighter area where the cars are parked.
