Will it fit?
I'm going to need new tires soon. I'll be buying Falken Fk452's. I want them as wide as I can fit 'em.
OE tire size is 235/45/17
Thanks!

Lil help fellas?
they will fit, but the tread is too wide, leading to sidewall flex which means handling will suffer.
That's what I was afraid of.....
245's it is....
Try this...
Tire Size Comparator
According to that calculator I should be fine....
Seeing as I'm not tracking my car, just having fun in the canyons, I may have to give it a go....
Franka, a member here, has been running 275's on a 9in wide wheels for years now. He says he has no problems. If he can run 275's I should be able to run 255's....right?
Anyone else have some input? 255's all around sounds awful tempting...
Minimum size per Falken website is 8.5" with 9" wheel recommended.
Now in E92 M3 ZCP -- Absolute beast
I recenly discovered that the STI and EVO guys have been running 255's on their OE 8in wide wheels for a while now without ill effect. I guess I'll be one of the first in the bimmer community to give it a try....
I absolutely don't recommend it. Go with a 235/40-17 for the best handling possible on your wheel setup.
+1. Trust us, 255 will feel mushy, unresponsive, vague. 235 will feel better and make transitions crisper. This advice comes from experience.
Dont think so? Here's a similar example. Check out the latest Grassroots tire test. They tested four 285mm tires and one 245mm tire on an 8" rim. The 245 was the fastest.
yea, on my 540i i run OE wheels with 245/45/17 Bridgestones on all four sides. No rubbing at all and even looks somewhat wide from the back.
i run a 275/40/17 on my 17x9.5's course this is on a Z28.. but a wheel is a wheel.. they fit perfectly with no "mushroom" effect.
having said that.. i have once ran a 255 on a 8" wide tire and the mushroom was terrible. Remember though.. certain tires run wider than others from different manufacturer's.. on a 8" wide wheel.. i would only use a 245.. for 9" i would use a 255.. for 9.5" a 275.. and a 10" a 275, 285 or 295.. depending on what brand tire.

dude don't do it. I have 255/40/17 on my 9.5 inch wide wheels. Your sidewalls are going to flex way too much. its just too much for an 8 inch wide wheel. I'm even thinking of going with 245s so I don't rub.
I have oil in my blood; that is my dedication level to cars.
Ok....
What if I was to use a tire that had a stiff sidewall? Maybe something like a Falken RT615...
Would this help?
no.. it wont..it will make mounting them a bitch for whom ever is going to do it.. it would actually make it worse because that stiff sidewall wants to be at vertical to the wheel and you;re trying to make it at a slight mushroom angle..
just dont do it.. learn from others that have already tried..

and you missed a key factor here... certain tires run wider than others.. find out what brand they are using.. and go from there..BFG tires typically run wider than other manufacturer's tires.. other brands are smaller and you might get away with it.. but you're also compairing apples to oranges.. you said STi guys and EVO guys.. their fender wells, brake systems, and backspacing also come into play for rubbing issues..
how about this.. since you know STi people and EVO people are doing it.. have them post pictures so you can see it..

ok, if you run this setup your car won't explode, it just won't have crisp handling....and the tires will look a little like fat muscle car tires to those of us used to trying to maximize handling. It's your car, do what you want.

245/40/17's work well as a plus 0 setup on the stock sport 17x8 wheels.
Since I am in the same identical situation (factory 17x8 wheels using OEM tire size 235/45R17), it looks like most favor using a tire even smaller than the factory setup for best, crisp handling: 235/40R17. So the order of preference for best handling, having the same tire size front/back, is then:
1) 235/40R17 (slightly smaller)
2) 235/45R17 (OEM size)
3) 245/45R17 (slightly larger)
Did I summarize this well? Wouldn't make sense to consider also a 245/40R17 size as well? Pros/cons?
Option 1 is preferred over the OEM for having slightly smaller/shorter sidewalls? Which is probably why option 3 is the least favored, right?
