    Testing for a faulty lifter?

I've run into a slight situation with my car. Since swapping the headgasket/installing M50 I'm now experiencing a 'ticking' sound. The sound appears to match the tick coming from the Fuel injectors, but I can't be 100% sure. I'm a little worried that when I sent out my head to be resurfaced, the machine shop may have swapped the location of the lifters.

Is there a way to test them to find which one is faulty? What is the worst case scenario if the vehicle is driven with the 'tick' and it is lifter noise?

Marco has helped me TREMENDOUSLY through my whole process. Just looking for others who may have experienced this...

    A few BMW's...

    Lifter tick

The location doesn't matter to much.

Have you driven the car or just let it idle?

If you drive them most of the time the lifter tick goes away. My S50 had horrid lifter tick...Only real way to stop it is replace the lifters with updated ones.

    '90 329is 2.9L M50,
Or, if you take the head off, you can replace the oil pressure check valve that holds oil pressure for the lifters.

I think you may be on to something here...Would a machine shop need to remove this check valve? When I pulled the head, I made sure that it was still there. I can't for sure remember if it was there when I put it back on ( HAve a few pics I ned to review tonight of when I got the head back!). Have you experienced this check valve going bad?

I have driven the car and it does drive like normal after I resolved a slight timing issue. Assuming that the check valve is there and intact, and that it is lifter noise, is my only option to replace all 24?

    Thanks guys..
