1991 - 1999 (E36) (1991 - 1999) The first modern 3 Series, the E36, was the model that paved the way for the 3 Series to be named "Car of the Year" every year since the model was driving off showroom floors. Radically redesigned in 1992, the E36 was not the same 3 Series as the E21 and E30. Larger, less boxy in design, and equipped with a dual overhead cam engine, multilink rear suspension, and a more finished interior, the E36 balances sport with luxury.

Which Is Faster, 97 BMW 328I MANUAL or the 91 BMW 850I AUTO??

Hey guys,

I just want to know which car is faster in 0-60 and 1/4 mile? Is there a big difference, I think there is like a .6 seconds difference? If I add a performance chip on both DME on the 850 would it beat a stock 328I? and if so by how much would it bring down the 0-60?

Also how is the handling on a 850 compared to a 328?

considering that 328s are fairly light and nimble, I bet it would be quicker off the line and handle better than the 850. Manual tranny also gives it an advantage over the shlushbox 850. I'm just guessing here though....

stock 0-60/ 1/4m times for these cars (stock):
1991 850i 7.4 15.6
1996 BMW 328i Sport 6.4 15.0

328i would be quicker, but the 850 has the rarity factor. What kind of shape are they in?

Man you dont understand, how bad I want this car. So then say that the 328 is 1 second faster to a race to 60 and .5 seconds faster in the 1/4 mile. Would adding a chip make it faster then a 328???

if your trying to pick between a 328 and an 850 i would choose the 850 even if it is auto.

I don't know why you would be debating which car to get...considering you already have 2 325's? go for the 850.

+1, Doubtful
+1, Sweet indeed
+1, Manual FTW, if it can be found.

OP, do you have the cash to take care of that 850 the way she deserves?

I was recently contemplating this, but have decided against it, as my car is just too much fun to drive, and I would probably regret spending so much money on speeding tickets if I got the 850. I doubt I could set the cruise control at anything less than 160 KPH on that car on the highway, sheerly for lack of willpower.

well first you already have 2 3 series so a 328 isnt going to be much faster. not to bring up the rareness but if you gave an opportunity to get a 850 i would. not many people come across the chance to get one. also if you get the 850 and decicde you dont like it you could always sell it and get a 328. and imo v12 auto>manual 6cyl but thats just my .02

None of you seem to have any inclination whatsoever of how insanely expensive is it to properly maintain and repair an older 8 series...

^^ Really if you have the money to buy an old 8 series BMW, do you think one would worry about repair costs. BMW's are quite high on the list when it comes to expensive repair costs. Why didn't you buy a honda... they are cheap to maintain. And Besides whether you like it or not the 850 will increase your Vagina count whether your 20 or 60 years of age. No to mention its got 4 more cylinders... how can you say no the exhaust note of that engine?

Not really, look at it this way, the 850 is a rare car, therefore the price doesnt go down that fast. Its a 91. Its a 16 year old car, but man its sexy I prefer the look and power of the 850 anyday. Not only that I can easily sell it for 12,000+ the car is clean and it only has 105,000KM

850s are rare, and thus cool. But their auto transmissions are notoriously bad and cost $5K to replace. So unless you can find a manual, I'd go with the mass-produced 3.

328 outperforms, out handles, has lower maintenance, newer styling, bigger interior, more comfortable interior, a rock solid obd2 m52 engine and has an endless availability of parts. Not saying the 850 is a "bad" car but for anyone trying to chose between them the 328 is a lot smarter choice.

Don't know about the accuracy of the numbers on this site but it looks fairly even.

I work at a dealership and work on all these cars i used to love 850's and 850csi's the most but after seeing them in the shop working on them driving them and learning the antique technology that they have i have to say that no matter how nice they look all 850's are the biggest pile of crap around period.... let me just say a few little things about the 850 first 2 valves per cylinder WTF a supercar with a 2 valve head no coil on plug 2 seperate dme's the engine operates as 2 seperate 6 cylinder engines and the hydroboost braking system leaves alot to be desired in the form of driver feedback in the brake pedal
