How to unlock your car with BMW Assist?

I thought I would write a nice article on how to unlock your car remotely by calling BMW Assist. I'm sure that not a lot of people are aware of this feature, so I thought I would make it obvious

If it's a duplicate, feel free to knock it down

This also can do the trick:

"This may come in handy someday. Good reason to own a cell phone: If you lock your keys in the car and the spare keys are at home, call someone at home on their cell phone from your cell phone. Hold your cell phone about a foot from your car door and have the person at your home press the unlock button, holding it near the mobile phone on their end. Your car will unlock. Saves someone from having to drive your keys to you as distance is no object. You could be hundreds of miles away, and if you can reach someone who has the other "remote" for your car, you can unlock the doors (or the trunk)."

Yeah, sorry to say if you buy into that you're a sucker. It's an urban myth. It might have been true if there were some sort of (ultra)sonic signal coming from the keyless remote.

At least is it more believable than unlocking all long distance calls by playing a couple of tones using a bubble gum wrap as in the movie The Core.

seems retarded that you'd have to repeatedly press and hold the trunk release an arbitrary number of times and hope to get lucky within 15 or so minutes.

Why can't they just tell the car to unlock?

They probably want to make sure you are right there with the car.

Just used this the other day and it works exactly like that post said. The first push and hold of the trunk button turned on a couple dash lights and the second opened the door. The longest part, about 5 minutes, was for the guy to get through all the computer input he had to at the other end.

Make sure you have done your Assist Activation by pushing the button in the car and talking with the service person. If you have not done this and set up your password, they will not open your car for you.

According to the guy on the phone, his main question was how long my car had been turned off. Apparently it usually takes longer if you car was off for longer. Don't know if that is true but that was his experience.

thank you for giving us even more details. I've tried this once at a dealer a long time when first BMW Assist came out but never had the chance to use it until now. It's really good to know that there is an option to do this.

I guess this justifies a little the annual fee

That's actually a variation on a very real exploit.

Commonly used devices include modified Radio Shack autodialers, personal MP3 players, and audio-recording greeting cards.

I have the Comfort Access option. According to the manual, the car is supposed to know NOT to lock if the keys are still in the car. I haven't had the misfortune of testing the feature.

you mean Comfort Access? just giving you a hard time. and yes, it knows the keys are in the car and won't lock. unless there's a set in the car, then another key outside the car. works well with the trunk. I've thrown the keys into the trunk and shut it. pops right back open after about a second.

Mine did while going through a tunnel car wash. Keys were in the center consol, car came out and was locked. I've since been told to place the keys in the slot when in a car wash to avoid this situation. Placing the keys in the slot turns CA off. Luckily I have BMW Assist and they helped me unlock the car remotely. This is only a feature on 2007 and newer Assist equiped 3's.

I have never been able to lock the keys in the car or trunk otherwise and the car has been through the same wash 20 times or more without issue.

for some reason I thought it works on older models as well, or maybe if you do a software upgrade
