The Stock Water Gauge Sucks - L33T VDO Replacement FTW

We all know how bad the OEM gauge is and how it is buffered. I am personally witnessed how far off it is and wanted to finally do something about it. I also replaced the radiator while everything was out. Pictures below!!!

Couple of Shout Outs for Good People!!!

    - Thanks to Mike McCoy of the Racers Market for the Adapter - www.racersmarket.net

    - Thanks to Parker Performance for the VDO Sender. Even had a mail issue and I had a replacement in 5 days and he had to order a new one! - www.parkerperformance.com

    - Thanks to Wayne of Autofab Motorsports for the extra hands and way too much BMW knowledge

    - Thanks to Matt(redefinedM3) for the pre-made gauge mount. Works like a charm but I did have to switch the headlight and foglight switches from mine to the one with the gauge because mine were much cleaner

    Things that were learned!!!!

    1. While warming up the OEM gauge shows straight up and down. VDO shows ~140 degrees. This means possible +/- 50 degree buffer or MORE!!!!

    2. If you travel too closely on the expressway in "dirty air" the temp will rise... Move out into the clean air and the temps go back down(Nice to be able to watch the temps)

    3. Sitting at a light in 100 degree Atlanta heat the temp WILL rise a good bit and the stock gauge does not move. I have the stock fan installed. I can't imagine what the temps would have done with no fan. Might be worth a test for all you FDM guys...

Will snap an underhood shot tonight:

so the vent is completely blocked off? or do you still get a little bit of air through there? I thought about doing the same thing with the center vent and two gauges (oil and water temps) but the loss of airflow would probably not be worth it.

I was really hoping someone swapped the gauge in the cluster for one with better resolution.

    Nonetheless, this is cool.

The driver side vent is worthless even when working. 80% of airflow comes from the center vent. I would never remove or modifiy the center vent but the drivers side is worthless to me. I rarely have passengers so the far right is turned off and the other passenger vent is aimed at the driver along with the center vent

Some air still flows around it not problem.

No, last time I looked at it I believe I can remove the OEM temp gauge and put the VDO in its place

Don't think you can bc the faceplate is continuous.
A separate gauge will not fit at the temp gauge position without cutting the stock plate or replacing with separate aftermarket plates and even then it will be iffy.
