2007 335i OVER HEAT

hello everyone,

335i over heating is real and scary for me...

I bought my brand new 335i twin turbo about in November of 2006..and I love it, it lots of fun to drive...However, yesterday morning I was on my way to work...after 6 miles, I was on I-66 all of sudden the overheating signal was on...I look at the thermometer in the car it said 210...and the computer keep telling me to shut off the engine... but as i tried to pull over...the engine shut off before i can get over to the right shoulder of road....so I stuck on the left shoulder of I 66 ...it about 4-5ft wide ....I sit there while so many car keep passing so closed and hornking at me as if I stopped there for fun, I could feel the whole car shaking as people driving by me...I called BMW assist (I am grateful for that feature) they said the police will be there shortly and AAA will be there within two hours....
for the next 45 minutes I kept sitting in my car with my seatbelt on and keep looking at the rear view mirror wonder when one of the car will hit me....very scary experience....after 45 minutes..no cops show up...so I deciced to turn on the engine and move over to the right shoulder...and that is all the car allow me to do...half way to right lane the engine shut off...lucky for me the car behind me was slow...the momentum take me to the right shoulder....seeing the car coming from behind and there was nothing you could do sure was scary....10 minutes later the cop came and put flares up....he was very nice...he told me to keep my seatbelt on and way..and gave me a business card if I need more assistants....I was so cold since I had to seat in the car without heat for 2 hours...finally the toll truck came and took me and the car to Passport BMW in MD....My sale rep was very helpful he gave me a loaner car...
This morning I called the dealer they said they need to replace a new electric water pump...

Thinking about that incident yesterday my heart is still pounding...I hope this information will help some else so that you guy don't have the experience what I did....
But how do you know when your water pump decide not to work..

I need some advise about this...
I really like my 335i but this incident shook my confident in my car..it was brand new....only with 4000 miles and it is overheated...if I have to sell my car later...the value would be greatly depreciated...what should I do? should I talk to someone at the dealer to get a different car ...someone please help ....

Unfortunate for you but it sounds like your overheating was from your water pump breaking. The overheating issue currently being discussed seems to be more of a potential design or engineering flaw.

the dealer is Passport BMW in MaryLand...

the electric pump is what they said but still an electric pump broke after 4000 miles...

Like I said in my other post on the overheating is real thread...no pic of your car no credibility. You are a new poster...why start posting with a negative thread???? This makes no sense. I am posting here even before I take possession of my car!

NEW CAR, NEW OWNERS. I guess I could have come here last year, but the car didn't exist?

I have never been here, I just bought the car and yes it does run on the hot side and it bugs the s h i t out of me. For some reason this lame forum doesn't allow me to post URL's, smileys or images so take my word for it I OWN the car,

I just want to share the unpleasant experience that I had so hopefully no one else has to go thru the same thing....it just the truth...sorry if it is negative...don't get me wrong...i love bmw....but this incident shocked me so I want to share the experience....

I guess some of you 335i owners are a little postal due to the fact that it truly is a "hot" car...

I'm sure I will have my own set of problems with my new 328i coupe, but it probably won't compare to the twin turbo's growing nightmare. BMW last built a turbo for the street in the early 80's. It was probalby inevitable that there would be some growing pains with the new 335i. BMW will get it right, but that doesn't help you owners of the 2007 model...

I hear you. Got my 335 up to 125 degrees earlier today and it just shut down for overheating. No problems from the Audi or Infiniti's though. Told me they were running around 400 degrees and everything was cool. No pun intended. But an sw for sure.

I understand. A pump should not break at 4,000 miles. But it can and does happen in any make of car that parts break prematurely. I am saying this is not related to the overheating issue that is being discussed.

What does this mean? I think the problem is when the engine shuts down due to overheating. I assume you are going by your impression of what the oil temp gauge should read. Do you know what BMW considers normal? Is yours operating above this range? Has the service department looked at it? I don't understand "runs on the hot side" without quantifying it.

And this is why I never buy something when it just comes out, especially a new model with a brand new engine.

But then again, if everybody were like me then there would be nobody left to beta test the car

While it doesn't need to overheat - ppl do realize it is supposed to run hotter than normal for fuel economy right?

You should not be scared to buy a car the first year it comes out. That's what warranties are for. I like buying a BMW the first year it comes out. That way I can drive the same car for 6 years and it looks like a current model.

What do you drive? Year and model?

Well now that my wife has talked to BMW North America directly let me quantify it for you.

BMW admitted theres a problem to my wife(nice to know after buying the car) and they are working on it. Our complaint has been filed and we will be notified as soon as the fix is available. So I will be expecting a service bulletin in the mail one of these years I guess............

OR... you could hold your horses and wait 1 year or even just a few months and buy a car that is much less likely to give you problems.

My car runs at 212 degrees (oil temperature) which is to the left of the centre of the gauge. This normal. 275 degree would be to the right of the gauge and still in the operating zone. I am starting to have suspicions about your story. I can not believe your car overheated at an oil temperature of only 210 degrees. I guess the computer caught the problem early?????

You didn't read his follow up, the electric water pump failed this is why the computer shut the car down..............Like he said still a failure after only 4000 miles..........

This guy said the dealer replaced the water pump. If his water pump failed than I am sure the car overheated, he may not be reading the gauge right. I have been trying to make the point to him that his problem is not the same alleged overheating problem that is being discussed.

My 335 has never gone above the "normal" range in the center of the gauge. My bro is a BMW tech and has not treated and 335 for overheating. I am not sure the problem is widespread.

LOL!!!! I just bought my car too and just yesterday became a member. What is with the restriction on smileys and urls????? This site must be run by people who own G35's and Lexus IS 350's who want to minimize bandwith on the world wide web dedicated to BMW's.
