    Magnaflow Muffler Install Procedure Pics

The job's only half done, so consider this post a "teaser."

m5james came over to my place today to help prep my wife's 2001 740iL for Magnaflow mufflers.

We downloaded some templates from the site, but weren't satisfied with any of the ones out there, so we decided to build our own which were "inspired" by some of the ones we have seen on the forums, but modified them to fit what we thought looked good.

Muffler shops in this area aren't open on Sunday, so all we could do was cut out the holes and put on the trim (which, as it turns out, REALLY sets this off!).

Here are a couple of shots of what we did today. When the mufflers are in, I'll write up a picture-laden how-to, with the template that we used in a neat and tidy PDF.

Big thanks to James for a great day (which turned out to be much more than he bargained for... but more of that story later!)

    In the bottom picture...

... it looks like you've lined/edged the cutout with something that looks quite nice. Please let us know what it is soonest?

Even from just the two pictures, it's the cleanest I've seen and you're to be congratulated.

As far as making your .PDF of the cutting template goes, I scanned what I thought was a good template to .PDF, but everytime I printed it out, it was being reduced somewhat. In my case, I'm very sorry I ever posted it because, even though the dimensions written on it were correct, if someone had used it without double-checking those measurements, they would have been disappointed... and probably mad at me.

If you guys mail me the cut-out pattern, I can scan it and create a nice PDF for it and post it on a website. (By the way, if you have an 8.5" by 11" file, then your computer will re-size it because printers only have a 7.5" by 10" printable area.)

It's off to the muffler shop this morning to get all this tacked up!

The "something that looks quite nice" that we put around the cutout is a $6 piece of self-adhesive door trim from the auto parts store. James and I were both blown away at what a difference it makes. If your car is black, it's the perfect way to set it off. Doing it properly includes "preheating your oven to 350" - but I'll explain more when I write up the whole procedure.

    It sounds SWEET.

Here are a couple shots of the final install.

Gotta give mad props to my boy James. I supplied the Dremel, he supplied the steady hand.

Getting results like these takes patience. I will write up the full procedure with photos and template in a PDF by tomorrow. For now, the pics will have to do.

(Edit: pics removed because the new ones are better... keep reading!)

    I've been reading these "Magnaflow"

posts for quite a while now, and while I am quite biased towards a german made muffler/exhaust system like Eisenmann, the price/quality difference seems to make it worth buying a Magnaflow!? Is that right?

If so, where can i get these Magnaflow systems and how much should I expect to pay for the parts only?

    Thank You

Gonna wait another day to finish the project. You may not be able to tell from the pics, but after living with the new exhaust tips for a day, my wife and I both think they are sticking out about 3/4" too far. So we have another appt tomorrow morning to have them moved in a bit. Otherwise, the sound is incredible. I'll take final shots tomorrow, and then create the write-up.

Ask him to bring it up a little also so the spacing looks nice and even all the way around. It looks awesome Steve, let me know when dinner is ready and I'll bring the Ms. over with me and we'll know out the intake while they watch a chick-flick

Read what Steve wrote in the first few messages. I always kinda tossed around the idea that the door edge trim would work so I suggested it to him, and since we were at Schucks anyways.......LMAO. After seeing it done on his car, it definately made the difference and removed any possibility of messed up or jagged edges that might have come up....but since I'm sooo good and all, it still would have looked awesome

Well, it looks very nice. I think were going to have to go head to head on a video and sound test. I just settled with my insurance and bought the car back and it's already in the shop getting repaired. I went with the OEM M5 exhausts. and wow the sound is very very very nice. I just need someone who knows how to upload the videos here in Denver. haha I'm sure I can figure it out but I'm too lazy unfortunately. Anyone in Colorado hit me up and I'll be more than happy to make a video...

Oh and I have install pictures which I'll be posting on Wednesday.

I thought the same thing. I'll take my Dremel with me to the exhaust shop today just in case I need to make a little more room, too. The trim took up some space from the cutout, so it's a tighter fit than we originally planned. I may increase the template size a percent or two to compensate.

Order your muffler, then bring it over and we'll knock out yours AND the intake in one afternoon.

Only someone who has a personal stake in either system should try and convince you - otherwise, you should convince yourself! If I were the type of person who likes others to make the same choices as I do in order to feel more confident in my decisions, then I would try to convince you. But I'm not that type of person.

I can create a sound file of the car revving, but to be honest, online approximations of the sound don't do it justice. The coolest sound is from inside the cabin between 2-3K rpm, when the exhaust just starts to "wake up." The nice thing is that off-throttle, it goes silent, just like it should. And the noise is not annoying so that a long road trip becomes a headache.

As to whether or not you want to pay big $$$ vs. $116 per side like I did, that's your choice. For me, the choice was easy - it's metal. Stainless steel. It's rolled up. Air passes through it. It's not magic. No sense in paying more for bragging rights. Magnaflow is a respected domestic brand. It sounds sweet and was easy to put on. Now I can spend the money I saved on oil changes for my Italian cars.

Is it moving out to the sides at all after a drive, or is it staying nice and centered? It looked a little close to the outer edges on the side shot you showed, but w/ the tips being double walled i wouldn't think it's an issue. Don't mess up my Picasso

I have to agree w/ Steve, which is why I laugh when people spend rediculous amounts of money on such simple to produce items. Companies duplicate and reproduce parts cheaper everyday, it's the american way so why spend rediculous amounts of money on what is basicallythe same stuff, for what, a name

Muffler = metal can, perforated insides, stuffed with steelwool and fiberglass.
Intake = bent metal/carbonfiber tube, generic filter on the end.
Supercharger kits = S/C and parts supplied by other manufacturers, only difference is software.

Spend money on parts that actually REQUIRE some engineering. A Tubi exhuast for a Ferrari that has multiple diverter valves and intricate bends to make it fit in confined areas and still sounds amazing....spend the appropriate money. An simple Eisennmann exhaust that you're looking at took no more engineering than this Magnaflow. You decide.
