E46 Motorsport Chassis Turbo Racecar

Hello all-

Been lurking on this forum for quite a while and am amazed at your dedication and passion for forced induction. So amazed in fact that I have decided to build my next racecar with Turbo Power!!

As you can see from my signature, I race an E36 Widebody S54 powered M3. I recently purchased an E46 M3 Motorsport Chassis Racecar with a 2.8l M52 motor and toyed with the idea of just moving the S54 over and being done with it. But I have the same disease as most of you do - I like MORE POWER.

So - my quest has started. We have made a decision today to convert the car to TURBO power. Becasue I need to stay under 2.3 liters to be in the same class I run in now (when you apply the 1.5 multiplier that forced induction brings) - we have decided to destroke the 2.8l M52 to 2.2 liters. So - 85 mm bore with a 66 mm stroke!

Decisions we have made so far include:
Evosport designed CP built Pistons
Evosport designed Pauter built Rods
Evosport custom Rod Bearings
Crankshaft work
RC Injectors
GT35r Turbo
Dry Sump
6 Speed Tranny
Built 3.15 diff with 30/90 LSD
AEM EMS control
One Piece Drive Shaft

The car already has Moton Triple Adjustable Coilover suspension and Ground Control control arms and sways.
The car will be getting Carbon Hood, Roof, Trunk, and doors, along with electric power steering pump and electric water pump. It will be running 18x10 Enkei Wheels with 280/650/18 Yokohama Slicks.

I will be detailing the build as I can, with our goal of 550 whp and 300 wtq. We will be doing some cool things with the boost control using the AEM and some traction control options also.

We (me and Evosport) are entering somewhat uncharted waters with an E46 Turbo Racecar destined to campaign 10 to 12 races in 2007. You all run these things everyday, while a turbo BMW racer is a RARE thing.

So - a question to get started:
We have the fabrication in house to build just about anything we want, including a custom exhaust manifold/header - but if there is a top mount manifold that is already out there, that has a proven record of flow and construction that can withstand 30 minutes or more at 75 to 90% full throttle, I would be interested in learning about it.

More to come!!

go bottom mount i believe pushing it like that for that long will cause high temps under the hood on a top mount

Interesting advice - thanks! Just FYI, and I don't know if it matters, but it will be a vented hood if that helps any - Vorsteiner.

I'd have Mike Radowski (sp?) or Jon Volk @ 666 fabrication build you one.

They both do tubular stuff and from what I've seen it looks awesome.

Good luck Jon!!

Oh wow. I can't wait to see some buildup pictures as the project develops.

This is going to be quite possibly one of the coolest cars ever.

Welcome to the boosted club racing scene Jon. The power will certainly be fun. I had spoken with Turner a few times about doing a turbo set-up instead of my supercharged rig just for the creative options available with an electronic wastegate. Good luck and remember you can never have enough cooling, especially on the intake air.

I'd go bottom mount too. Cooling will be easier and it will help maintain a lower cg.

I'd say your only "mystery" piece will be tuning. Like what system and who's going to do it.

Should be a blast...pun intended...

Oops..nevermind see you're in with AEM. That's 90% of the battle solved.

Unless you're looking to fit a monster turbo, I don't see why you'd fit a topmount manifold.
