    Reminds me of mine.

At least, I managed to punch a hole through the block. This guy is an amateur.

I don't have detailed pics of the internals on mine. I do know that bits and pieces of pistons were found in the headers and intake manifold.

    holy poop!
“If the representatives of the people betray their constituents, there is then no resource left but in the exertion of that original right of self-defense which is paramount to all positive forms of government, and which against the usurpations of the national rulers may be exerted with infinitely better prospect of success than against those of the rulers of an individual State. In a single State, if the persons intrusted with supreme power become usurpers, the different parcels, subdivisions, or districts of which it consists, having no distinct government in each, can take no regular measures for defense. The citizens must rush tumultuously to arms, without concert, without system, without resource; except in their courage and despair.” – Alexander Hamilton, Federalist No. 28

That's really crazy. I misshifted from 5th to 2nd at about 80mph and basically all I did was bend a valve and score cylinders 5 and 6 fairly light about 12 times. I wonder how long it took that guy to push the clutch in to stop the madness . . .

    He...he...

Try 3 to 2 at 93. THAT'S an even bigger money shift. Oil was dripping out of the ITG air filter.

As long as you find a cheap S52, it's not that bad.

It didnt take me long...infact it was so fast that the tires barely locked up...we did not spin or anything.

The sound was not that bad...I thought it should have been louder!

I bought a used motor with 56,xxx for 3850.00 and it will be installed for around 1500-2000 so it will be about a 6000 repair. The damage might have been so bad cause I was at red line in 3rd when I went to shift to 4th. I have a 3.46 rear end so I was almost spinning second gear at 1.5x2 of seconds redline. We were at track out of turn 7 which meant the trans was rolled to the side with stock trans mounts it went into second like butter and as soon as I heard the weird sound of a super rev limiter I pushed the clutch back in. WOW it was crazy!

My Mechanic was actually in the car and he didnt even think we blew the motor cause it just sounded like the car popped out of gear. We ended up being ok and the car looks like brand new still, I just need a new "used" motor.

As a lesson for those out there. If I had shifted in a non rushed state before the turn in I would not have been at redline at track out and not needed to jerk a shift. I will be more likely to short shift turns like this one in the future!

Did you get another S50 or go the S52 route?

Surely you can find a cheaper place.

My shop replaced my S52 and did all that follows, parts and labor included, for 2200$CAN :

    New rear main seal
    New belts
New clutch + pressure plate + bearings
    New shifter bushings
    New plugs
    New oil pan gasket
    New fuel filter
Fan delete mod (thermostat + fan switch, the whole nine yards)
    Turner headers (provided by me)
    Metal impeller waterpump
    CDV delete
UUC Red TMEs (provided by me)
    Tack welded oil pump nut
    Cleaned ICV
Fresh Royal Purple oil in the tranny (provided by me)

And yes, I paid 2000$CAN for an 80k mile S52 that runs better than the previous one (no flat spot at 5k rpms, no Vanos noise).

The S50 is a rare motor compared to the S52. the S50 was only on one model year and therefore harder to find a low mileage replacement. the S52 was in the 96-99 so there are 3 times the amount of motors.

Also the S50 is used by e30 guys so the demand is also higher.

I dont want an s52 motor cause I believe the power I have in an s50 is higher then that I can get from the s52. to get the same power I would have to change over to OBD1 and then have an illegal motor.

I feel much better with what I am getting.

my buddy had a 85 pontiac sunbird and intentionally downshifted into 1 @ around 90.

Oil was spraying through the front grill and it popped the head off. nevermind the block having a hole the size of a baseball in it.
