THIS THREAD IS NOT FOR YOU TO ASK QUESTIONS!!!!! PLEASE MAKE A NEW THREAD TO THE QUESTION!!!! THIS IS TO POST LINKS RELATED TO E39'S!
So yeah.. there's the FAQ but that's only like for common questions. here's a list of my saved "favorites" for E39. i'm sure some already have them but if it's not mentioned, feel free to add them to this thread.
The ever so popular BMWTIPS dot COM
I like this guy's site. it's organized and has some very good DYI procedures.
Again, a pretty well done up DYI site from rolling fenders to suspension survey.
Something simple... just rear fog lights. Well written and plenty-o-pics!
Want more DYI then you REALLY want to do? well, look no further. this guy has done more then is fair share.
Cleaver site with some pretty cool (and cheap) mods.
Not a lot of write-ups but got a pretty good DYI front bumper conversion procedure.
Everything and ANYTHING you want to know about brakes... and probably the BEST place to get them too.
How to unlock your HI-OBC. Kinda sucks if you don't got this upgrade. I think ALL 540's have HI-OBC while only SOME (and i don't think it's much either) 528/525's have HI-OBC's.
The Official Unoffical BMW site of almost everything-you-wanted-to-know-and-documented site
If you got NAV, this is your BEST FRIEND.
OK.. that's it from me.. i'm spent. your turn...
oh, you might want to bookmark this or make it a sticky...

Some good info on here...

This isn't a DIY site, more like a giant catalog of crap strictly for the e39...

As always, Dan - thanks for the great info. U2 Nick.
how about the e39 page from the infamous www.e38.org web site: http://www.e38.org/e39/
Lots of links etc to past documented write-ups and instructions w/pics...also has owners manuals for various model years, Nav manuals, Blue Tooth manuals etc.
...oh yeah...the OBC on the low clusters (on the inline 6 e39's ) can be unlocked, too. I believe the info is on bmwtips.com ....if you read deeper into the "unlocking" procedure, I believe it mentions what you have to do to unlock it. It takes a bit more patients since you only have the one instrument cluster button to press...and you have to hold the button longer and do a combo of long/short pushes etc.
I know I've read it somwhere, just unsure of exactly where (plus I don't own an e39 which puts it low on the relative scale for me)

I was thinking about some of the hurdles I had when I first got my car- this site is second nature to me now and is a god send for those of us that do our own maintenance. www.realoem.com To use it best, enter the last seven characters of your vin number, it will show EXACT parts diagrams for your vehicle. You can then print out or write down the part numbers you need and order them at your local dealership. They are always impressed when you already have the part number
i can't take credit for finding this link but i will post it. i actually use this quite often at work when filling out cpo paperwork. it's a great compendium of bmw wheel styles. http://bmwtips.com/tipsntricks/wheels/BMWWheels.htm
Thanks for compiling this list. I'm in the process of picking up my new (to me) E39 and you've saved me hours of work.

a really good info site
The e39 540i is gone, awaiting the e60 m5, till then ill drive the wifes 05 x5 4.4i
Great link thanks guys!
excellent.
i know right above this post is the DIY for the H7 HID retrofit, however, early model E39 had a different fog light housing (rectangular ones) and not the round ones in above post.
interestingly, early E39 shared the same fog light housing as the Z3s. So, here's a link to rectangular H7 HID conversion (on the Z3, but applies equally to early E39)
