Those foam HK$ filters don't filter very well.
Something better would be the AEM Dryflow filters.

I dont wanna put a 90d bend on my turbo and the clearance to the headlight is kinda tight so Id prefer the mushroom filter.

an import mag reviewed all the major filter kits out there including AEM's dry filter, HKSs filters, Greddy filters, blitz filters, an OE filter (for the bench mark) and K&N filters. they found the blitz and HKS to be of the worst they've ever seen.....worse then the stock OE filter.

the AEM came out as the champ.

So, if they are so bad why will the be so expensive? Thanks for the info, I appreciate it.

HKS = bend over, empty your wallet and grab your ankles. There is no reason...it's a name like Gucci so for whatever reason they charge more.
Where have I been? Astral projecting.

all foam filters blow. theyre just above using screen. K&N has a study on their site that shows the filtering ability of foam filters. they do rank a considerable about BELOW even the lowest grade corrugated paper elements.

I just purchased a AEM dryflow for less than $50 and its quality is excellent. It was either the dryflow or the new Amsoil eaau which imo are the best filters for a low price out there.

Here's another air filter test www.bobistheoilguy.com/airfilter/airtest1.htm

A budget option might be a big cone filter off a newer fullsize truck? IIRC a GM/Chevy has one stock.
And you might be able to find an Amsoil replacement for that?

Foam and K&N filters tend to have larger holes than paperfilters. Hold a clean one up to the light and you'll see what I mean. More (or larger) holes means more flow but less filtration. Add to that the hks filters are too thin. If you look at a Monsterflow or Uni-Filter foam filter it's thicker and usually have 2 densities/layers of foam for better filtration.
Fram Airhog filters are actually pretty good, so are Green filters. Both are probably better than K&N but still use oil which can get on the MAFS hotwire...

All I can say is whatever . I do not see K&N in the top of the line motorsports such as F1 or MOTO GP.

I used ITG in my race car and my turbo car . so complains and I tried most of them but the HKS.

Best filters for filtering are paper then oiled cloth filters like k&n and then foam, for best flow foam filters like itg are great but allow bigger particles through. I get dyson oil analysis done on my race car and he recomended switching to a paper cone made by fleetguard for best performance so thats some food for thought.

I got mine locally to my surprise.

Here's a good price online to buy them: http://www.autoanything.com/air-filt...A2591A0A0.aspx.

I went with the 5" element with a 3" inlet. Wanted to go with a longer one but had no room between the turbo and the air conditioning.

They also don't worry bout the longevity of their engines much in both motorsports.

I only referenced K&N due to their study they did on particulate filtration diference between foam, paper and oiled cloth. I wasnt point to K&N as a company.

for a race car, longevity is different compared to a road car. foam is a very very good option for motor sports because it has a lower pressure drop across it, so it lowers the intake pumping losses for the engine or turbo. its the next best thing compared to no filter at all. a dry foam filters filtering ability though is much lower. no one can deny that. also, an oiled foam filter gets TERRIBLY dirty quite fast compared to a cloth and they tend to load up.

i imagine you clean yours every race. every racecar ive seen.......80% run oiled foam. they clean them every time they packup and head home.

so FYI.....i wasnt knocking them. they have their place in the world of motorsports. you are using them in the right place.

doh, I forgot about ITG. It's also 2 different kinds of foam?
I've got one of them for the DGV on the 510. But it rubs the hood so I just skip it and use thick oil with pretty frequent changes.

you guys ever try panty hose?
