m50 motor misfiring in 1-4 gears, 5 gear revs smoothly?

hello my m50 motor from a 93 325is with stick shift was misfiring in all gears from 1-4 except 5 it will rev smoothly. when i adjusted my foot on gas and played with the gas pedal i got some spots of smooth revs in gears 1-4. hmmm. the motor pulled stong in 5th but not in other gears unless you vary the gas pedal pressure playfully. I dont know what revs is all this happening because my instrument cluster does not work. I always have had a cel on that goes away when the car is idling and not moving for more than a couple of minutes. The idle is smooth and steady.Hello experts what do I do this car. and what is the causant of bad acceleration in some gears but not 5 gear? I tried the pedal dance to get codes.no good. cel just flashes and stays on. goes away after idling and non movement for a while. M50 experts please chime in. and any other non experts too.

Sounds like a missfire... What brand coil plugs do you have? Take off the plastic fuel rail cover (10mm bolt, 2 of them) then take off the big plastic cover that says BMW on it, which is also heard by 2 10 mm bolts. Under that you will see the six coils. On the coils where will be a brand name and a number. There is a company that bmw used to make coils on the early models that were bad. Forget the name. Bosch are the good coils, but they can also go bad. How many miles on the car and also what is the condition of the spark plugs?

Other things to think about is fuel, but that shouldnt set off a CEL light if the pressure is low or something like that on a OBD1 car. 02 sensor could be bad but it wouldnt flash the CEL, it would just stay on.

Check the throttle position sensor. Disconnect wire & measure resistance as you slowly open throttle(engine off). Should have smooth change in resistance. If it jumps around or has areas of zero resistance, replace sensor.

yes i will take off the plastic fuel rail cover and check and also the big plastic cover.OK.Done. I have 2 coils that say Bremi 11856T Made in Germany 12.10.04 and 4 coils that say Zundspule M 91 06 and have the bmw logo part number is 2052.0110 002 on it. Bremi Coils are on cylinders 2 and 5 and Zundspule coils are on the rest of the 6 cylinders. I do not know the mileage of the car because the instrument cluster is not working. spark plugs are? cant pull them. My CEL does stay on!

Getting the car scanned would be great. Thats weird you have diffrent coils in there. I think the Zundspule are the early bad coils, but dont quote me on that. Ill search around and see what I can find. Do you have any repair records?

It indeed looks like the Zundspule are the bad brand of coils, and the bremis arent that good themselfs. Here is a coil resistence thread.

Most shops can do it, Im lucky enough to know people and get it done free, so not sure about the cost. Usually they will charge an hour for diagnostics, not sure what the rate is in miami. It would probably cost around $100 to get the car scanned. But you can go to an auto parts store, here I know autozone has scanners that let you view codes. They are very general though, but they still do get the code. Not sure what auto stores you have in miami.

There are these little rubber rings that keep oil from going into the spark plug hole. If that is leaking it can cause a missfire.
