Thought I'd post a few pics (albeit crappy ones) of the progress I made over the weekend. I now have my intercooler mounted, new air flow meter mounted, and welded up most of the boost pipe from turbo to intercooler, and have the pipe from AFM to turbo welded up. That last pipe was the tricky one, lotsa compound angles...

wow, The plan is taking shape..
Looks good, Is that AFM housing a Volvo turbo part?
That intercooler is a monster, should get the chill on...
Jeff
It's a Porcshe 931 (924 turbo) AFM and intake boot which is downdraft rather than updraft like the volvo. It's setup perfect to be mounted just above the turbo.Originally Posted by JDB
The intercooler was the smallest ebay cheapy I could find, 12x11x3 core, 2.5" inlet/outlet, it cost me $100. It fits very well in front of the radiator, the only problem is I now have no room for a cooling fan... any ideas? Right now I'm thinking dual 8" pullers.
Awesome job JR, I am following your footsteps, since my turbo is mounted on the same location.....
thanks for the pics.

looks great but your radiator is going to have a bad time in the future
Thanks. yeah, I considered that. A lot of factory turbo cars have the intercooler mounted in front of the rad, including the Lancer Evo, Volvo 240t(which completely covered the rad) to name a few. I'll see if i have cooling issues, if so I still have room for the Ron Davis special.Originally Posted by Hatchman
Whats your clearance from radiator to crank pully, or closet pertruding object to the rad?
Lookin good. Is that a Mercedes downdraft flow meter?
You know if you run into cooling issues with you radiator, you could always pick up a stock side mount from a saab or something.
If you want to dish out some extra cash for a core and end tanks, check out http://griffinrad.com/intercooler_chart.php. They can give you everything you need. They also have a good tech line if you have any questions. My buddy uses both their radiator and a FMIC. Deffinately worth the investment.
Also, what kind of hose boots are you using?

Heck, you could also run an auxiliary radiator and fan from a motorcycle. When I used to part out bikes on ebay, I kept some of them with that in mind, or the thought of using them for the heat exchanger for a water-to-air intercooler. One of my buddies uses one of the fans on his little top mount intercooler (VW Golf 2.0) and hooked to a thermoswitch works great. Lots of options. Not lots of room, of course, but some.
The core spacing on an air to air is usually bigger than on a radiator. You should be fine.Originally Posted by jrcook320
Where would you mount a side mount intercooler? If in the engine bay then it is a worthless waste of space and wieght as it will quickly turn into an interheater. My radiator will change before the intercooler changes.Originally Posted by erzengel13

Ah, a 924 turbo - that should be a very, very good match for your engine. Cool.
Honestly, and not to plug the company I work for, don't forget about water-methanol injection for intercooling and detonation suppression. I am the Sales Director for Snow Performance www.snowperformance.net and would be happy to chat with you about using it as a chemical intercooler if you want/need to. Usually around 60-100deg F intake temp drops, and with 91 oct gas, equivalent to 116 oct race gas. Totally different world of technology compared to the old school water injection kits.
Keep us updated.
HELL, KEEP US UPDATED.... chemical intercooler, huh........Originally Posted by greggearhead

Not gonna thread hijack - I'll start a new one tonight and talk about it.
interesting. I'll check it out. How expensive is an entry level setup? this turbo project is on a very tight budget.Originally Posted by greggearhead
edit: you know, another good way to lower intake temps is nitrous. I think a 50 shot should do the trick. haha, j/k
