    Question Coolant Hoses

So it's about time for the coolant hoses to be replaced. Since a few were soft, I figured I might as well replace all of them on my 11 year old car. Here's what I'm thinking of buying online. Can someone let me know if I'm missing something? Or if I should replace anything else while I'm at it? (I'm also planning to replace the thermostat housing with an aluminum one.)

Maybe this diagram will help, although you probably already have seen it.

I am thinking of doing all the hoses on mine, but some of the hoses look very tough to get to, possibly requiring that some stuff be taken apart in order to open up space in which to remove/replace the hoses. To anyone who has replaced all of their cooling system hoses: Is it necessary to remove any parts in order to open up space in which to remove/replace the cooling system hoses that lie more toward the inner/back top rear of the engine? If so, then what are/is the best thing(s) to take apart in order to open up the space necessary to remove/replace these hoses with minimum trouble/time/effort?

If I knew more about how my car is put together, I would be able to answer this question myself, but since I don't the advice of someone who knows would save me a lot of time and trouble. Thanks, any help if much appreciated

You link is almost exactly the same as my first link. Thanks for the thought, though. I appreciate the effort.

As I understand it, the intake manifold and everything upstream needs to be removed, so a couple of gaskets will need to be replaced along the way.

I haven't decided whether to do it myself, but, either way, I want to buy the parts myself to save a couple of bucks. I can tell this is going to be one of those "fun" maintenance jobs.

The reason I haven't done this yet is removal of the fuel rail. I'm so afraid I'm going to cause a vacuum or fuel leak somewhere with all those old O rings and seals that I will be disturbing!

This is exactly the type of thing that I want to be aware of before I start trying to replace these hoses. Can anyone who has actually replaced the less accessible hoses that you would need to remove parts in order to access chime in with some insight?

    There must be something wrong with the ETK. I ordered parts #4 (64 21 1 394 293), #5 (64 21 8 391 240), and #6 (64 21 8 391 239).

This is what I got. WTF? Two of the parts don't match up with the diagram (and my car) at all.

Here's an update with all the parts I used. I also included some extra if you want part numbers/etc for the other coolant-related stuff.

EDIT: Forgot to mention that the ETK lists the wrong numbers for the heater valve hoses. Maybe they're for the Euro M3 engine? Mine is the US S50 engine.

hey man i dont want to flame on you or anything cuz you are just looking for some help but you might get more results under the "M3 Series (E36)" section rather than this one the non-m section. If I knew about that stuff id be all over it to help you but I havnt done any of that yet so im no help...

It's mostly a matter of time. I've heard suggestions to change all under-hood hoses every 4 years, but it seems like most people only change the upper and lower radiator hoses when they break. I went hog wild and did everything because the car is old and it's already a lot of work to get the intake manifold off.

i have a 91 318i sedan and need info on those hoses.
I'm changing the intake hose under the manifold and the part numbers on the diagram are all wrong. anyone have an updated list of part numbers and diagram for the hoses on the 91 318i sedan

you can send them off list if possible to brian@ispgroupinc.com

I have a 1995 318i sedan and it keeps running hot. I've replaced the radiator, water pump, thermostat, upper and lower radiator hoses and it continues to run hot. I'm concerned that I need to replace the head gasket and have the head checked while it's apart. Any suggestions before I pull the head off, as to what you might think the problem is? Also should I have a compression test done to rule out the head gasket or warped or cracked head as the problem? If you like to email me direct I can be reached at alweems1@gmail.com

Many, many thanks!! I could not figure out what the heck was going on! I've had my 98 M3 torn down to replace the freeze plugs on the intake manifold side and wanted to replace every hose while in there since it is such a job to take apart. I could not figure out why ETK's part number looked entirely wrong.
Now maybe I can get this thing back together and start driving her again!
