    "Last Z8" SPOTTED

I spotted a black Z8 in central New Jersey, near englishtown, on RT. 9

After giving the driver the cheesiest thumbs up ever, I noticed the license plate read "Last Z8."

If someone did a check, we could probaly find out if it was really the last Z8.

BTW, it was a nice car. It took me a second to realise what I was looking at.

Considering the headquarters is located in NJ it wouldn't be too far fetched a possiblity.

Yep, they only came in automatics I believe. I think they were going for the big, expensive luxo coupe, like the Mercedes SL.

Maybe he's wrecked so many z8's that his wife made him get that plate to remind him that he couldn't get anymore if he wrecked that one?

I don't think so. The first and last Z8s are in the Mobile Tradition Collection (Part of BMW AG) housed in Garching (Munich suburb). I saw both when I toured Mobile Tradition in July of 2003 when I collected my Z8 via European delivery. The only way his is the last is if he stoled it!!!!

On second thought, it could be the last Alpina, but then his plate should read "Last Alpina V8 Roadster" since it is not a Z8. Oh wait, that won't fit on the plate. Oh well.

How do you identify a Alpina Z8? Are they all considered Alpina's?

They are visually quite similar, but mechanically completely different. The Z8 uses the same S62 400hp Motorsport-built V8 used in the e39 M5, along with the same 6 speed manual trans. The Alpina V8 Roadster (not Z8) uses a version of the 4.8L V8 used in the X5 with a slushbox. Externally, the Z8 has purpose built 18" wheels, while appropriately enough the Alpina has 20" Alpina wheels. There are other differences, but those are the most significant.

I agree, but slight mistake. I think its the 4.6L from the X5 4.6is, the 4.8 came out this MY2005, too new. I've read the auto tranny couldnt handle the torque from the S62.

And the best way to tell the difference b/t Alpina or Z8, if you cant see inside, are the rims, Alpina one has the classic style of Alpina rims.

Now why can't they bring other Alpina products to the US!

    edit: I'm wrong, scroll down.

    actually, you're both slightly off.

the 4.8L is an Alpina motor, not the 4.8 or 4.6 found in the premium X5.

the 4.8L pumps out MORE torque then the S62.

Actually, I'm not slightly off. I said that it "uses a version of the 4.8L V8..." and it does. The operative word being "version." Being a Z8 owner, I'm pretty well versed in the ins and outs of the Z8 and its distant cousin.

And you are correct, the Alpina V8 Roadster does have more torque, but it runs out of breath much sooner than the S62.

4.6 engine that is in the X5 4.6is is actually Alpina engine
4.8 engine that is in the X5 4.8is is NOT Alpina

4.8l in Alpina V8 Roadster is Alpina and was available on B10 V8S before appearing on the V8 roadster.

Just wondering why BMW decided to built all new engine when 4.8is was already available?

    No problem, it's all good!!!

Why don't you like the X3 though? It handles like a car, has good power (3.0i), takes all my ski gear and has enough clearance to let me get away with no snow chains most of the time (can't say that about the 330ix or wagon)?

    Cheers

Well the M6 is a classic, the M3 is what it is, 750 is a V12 (it is an e38 right?), Z8 goes without saying. Of course someones daily driver can't be as kickass as the above, although I just have problems with the X3, just the styling looks so awkward, I'm not totally jumping on the hate bangle bandwagon, I do like the Z4. Anyway, it seems to fit your lifestyle, and with a stable like yours, you have a collection I dream of.

Have you posted pics of all the cars together before? Would be a beautiful selection of BMW's.
