I'm just wondering , does this happen when you drive the car hard or just by normal everyday driving? :
Driving the car hard would increase the chances of the subframe issue, however, it's doesn't really mean much. The problem is inconsistent. It happens to those who drive hard, those who drive like grandma's, those who are on stock suspension, those with slammed rides, those with high miles, those with low miles, etc...Originally Posted by hal88

I'm currently going through this problem now. The current plan is to replace to rear subframe.Originally Posted by fahrvernguyen
Has anyone tried the kit above? Before or after the crack? How is the kit holding up?
I'm torn between getting rid of the car and having it fixed. Any help/info/suggestion are welcomed.
BMW would cover this if it's still under warranty, mine is not.Originally Posted by sshaikh01
when mine failed I just welded the sh!t out of it, and there have been zero problems since. The subframe reinforcment kit is a great investment if you are going to be fixing it anyway. I wish it was available when I did mine because now I don't want to spend a day under my car again to get to the s-frame.
^^and he wonders why stuff breaks all the time...

Had my subframe repaired by Turner Motorsport. They did an awesome job-- its now bulletproof. Sucked to have it done though, cost me $1600 . Car was out of warranty and BMW NA did nothing to help. Went through all the channels as far as I could. I do recommend filing a complaint with the NHTSA.

Just encountered the problem. Rear subframe cracked on my 2000 323Ci. BMW is not helping at all, I am really pissed BMW wants 4K to fix this. I am filling a complain with NHTSA, BBB and anything that I can get a hold of. Any suggestions?
Over on e46fanatics there was a lot of talk about taking action since a lot of people had the problem and BMW all said "no" to fixing.Originally Posted by kiapeyvan
How's the rear subframe reinforcement kit they offer? Anyone try it?
Has this been a problem on later model e46's. Mine is a 04. I wonder if I need to keep an eye out for it too.

Depending on the year of the particular m3, they re-enforced it in the later models... 97+ if i remember correctly.Originally Posted by mihalis
His was a 97. It really sucked for him, I felt really bad. I think I'm going to buy this kit from Turner Motorsports and get it installed. I really don't want to rist this happening to my car, cannot afford to fix it if this happens.Originally Posted by bluskye

Hi, in the UK here, and about to buy an MY2003 E46 touring.
Was the problem rectified with the later(ish) models, or is it worth getting this kit to ensure that the problem doesnt occur to my new car ?
Thanks in advance.
JB.
Well whats the warranty period from BMW for this subframe issue ?
BMW E46 330ci M ClubSport - Estoril Blue - Bi-Xenons - Heated Leather - Facelift - OEM Style 71 18" 2 Piece Alloys - Carbon Style Cubed Trim - OEM LED Rear Lights
I bought my 328 new in 1999. In 2003 I had this issue and it took BMW many weeks to repair it. In my case they didn't correct the problem though and 2 years later I had the problem again. I took it to Turner Motorsport here in MA and they fixed it and corrected the problem so that it shouldn't happen again.
I can't say enough about the TMS team - they know more than BMW in some ways...
