How long does it usually take to get down to VIR from DC? I'll probably be leaving Friday night, hopefully after rush hour traffic is through.

DC to VIR is approx 240 miles...I go staight down 29-S past charlottesville, past Lynchburg and into Danville on 58-W....there are a few other ways...ie 95S to 85W to 58W...
it's an easy roadtrip...trailering the racecar it takes about 5.5 hrs...inc. stops fuel, food etc...

I just watched a video of a guy in a race at Mid-Ohio. That is some aggressive, intense driving.
I DO NOT have the ballZ to do that type of driving.
Hmmm... $300 to race the whole weekend and a 249mile trip is quite a lot. Considering I am going to be down a ton of money before I head up to D.C. I may be able to jion in. If I don't race I would at least love to go down and just see what it is all about. Your cars are actually trailered cars only made for the track? Mine is just my daily driver. And what category woudl I be tossed into for a stock 97 m3 coupe? ?

Depends on car and driver http://www.gandwmotorsports.com/regi...llfling04.html
$300 is a nice deal. A bit too risky for me in a daily driver. That whole timing thing crosses the line for me. Someday I'll have a car that I won't be worried about. That weekend I'll be at an M school in Spartanburg throwing around their M3s and M5s. I'll be at VIR the weekend before with Tarheel.
From Germantown I take 95 to Richmond. Powhite Parkway to Amelia. Then I think it is 58 to the track. It takes me a little more than 4 hours with one fuel stop. Of course that is not trailering a car and moderate traffic between Springfield and Fredricksburg.

Are people driving back and forth or are they staying at hotels?
Also looking at the categories. Do you figure I would most likely be in the Blue section? Since I've had some driving (no racing experience) but am still new to my bimmer?
Also what would the sancitoning body be? Is it just a lot filled with cones, or an acutal race track with some cool ass shit? (sorry for all the questions, never went to one) Also my brakes still work, but are getting pretty low, (rotors and pads) Would I need to replace it all before going out or what? (i'm assumign so, at least the pads) But if anyone can fill me in all all the details, it will be the deciding factor if I go out and race or not. Are you able to go out and just socialize for a small fee and not actually race?

It is a race track. Not an autocross.
Low brakes? VIR has some heavy brake zones. The temps will be cool so that may work in your favor as far as cooling. If you only have one set of brakes I would be sure you are at least 1/2 remaining and flush your brake fluid with Ate gold or blue. I don't know about street pads. They may be fine, you just have to be sure you have enough brake to slow up. I can't really recommend street pads unless it is for someone's first couple of schools.
Also everyone should keep in mind as the sun sets the track surface gets very cold. Something I have seen instructors forget as they go sliding off NASCAR into the tire wall.
As any track it is very important to read the track. People freak about rain but do not take in consideration cold. I treat a cold track like a wet track. It's kept me out of trouble so far.
Does your car have a full cage, racing buckets and harnesses?
Full race suit?
Otherwise you should certainly not be racing.
Just go out and have fun and maybe even pick up some car control.
My fun is in car control, not by going fast.

hmmm....well I'm guessing since my funding will be low and everything. I probably will not race, since I would have to do quite a bit to get my car reeady to for the track, and also have to buy a helmet and what not. But am I able to go out and socialize and meet some of the people on the board for free or a small fee to get in the gates?

this event is not a race...it is not timed and is not a speed contest. It is a DE/lapping type environment with run groups based on driver and car. Please don't confuse it for racing, it is non-competitive...I say this because I wouldn't want others to get confused or those that are out there to learn to think that this was a competitive environment...which it is not.Originally Posted by giterdone
get your pads changed before you come to VIR. Put yourself in the beginner group. VIR is a real racetrack and its long and fast. Go with an open mind and keep your vision up...you'll have fun just make zero assumptions and be willing to learn...

Do all HPDE events have instructors? In case of this event, I assume only the last (red?) group does not.
I would advise you (and others who have questions) to fallow the posted link to the registration page...at the bottom you'll see a contact number. Call them and find the correct answers to your questions...posting on a forum will not always get reliable answers....hope this helpsOriginally Posted by giterdone
