    Question E30 Cold Air Intake

Anyone see a "real" cold air intake kit for an M20 in an E30?
I mean, heatshield, cone filter, hardware and all..

I want it more for sound and for looks than anything else (although any performance gains will always be appreciated ) but I can't seem to find anything like this around anywhere. Even though I just want it for looks and sound, I want a heatshield so that I don't actually lose performance while sucking in a buncha hot air.

    Anyone got any ideas?

    well, that's great for everyone..

unfortunately I don't have access to the materials or equipment to make one myself.. and short of my high school shop class, I probably wouldn't remember how to easily machine anyways... so, I asked.. and got a good reply too.. are there any other options out on the market?

Check out BMP Design. They make all sorts of stuff for bmws. They have a cold air intake with heatsheilds and hardwere for 150US or so.

one instant cold air intake kit would be the Pipercross Viper.
it comes with a hose that looks freaking good has a funnel in one end and a carbonfiber shell encasing the pipercross air filter on the other end.

    but it cost a bomb

what i'm trying to say is, it's quite simple, get some industrial aluminium flexible hose, plug it in to your airfilter pod or whatever that's going to be practical and hose it maybe somewhere cooler. that should produce a true cold air intake.

it's quite difficult to shield the intake part since the E30 isn't really friendly to design one with...

and i have the ABS control in mine so it's quite difficult. the hosing teachnique should be eaisier to make

i've made one one my E34 before. a little ghetto though, but for a few hrs job, i'm pretty proud.

for a soop, i used a plastic container, those microwaveable type, found a right sized one to fit in the fog light opening(i don't have fog lights attached) i made a hole into the container

the plastic flex hose plugs into it snaking into the air filter

if you rev the engine and your hand's close to the "scoop' you'll feel he suction and it litterally sucks your hand in

    hope it helps

    cheers

    Way to be an asshole.

Anyway, Lukas BMW is the best bet or just cut off the bottom of your stock airbox [not joking]

hmm.. how was that being an asshole?

I explained myself pretty clearly and I meant no offense to anyone else..

everyone is entitled to their opinions, and if i'm too friggin lazy to want to build something that's my problem, I was asking for suggestions.

Anyways, I'm considering the Lukas BMW heatshield. looks nice.. as for the airbox, if i were gonna mod it, i'd find a larger OEM airbox that fits, then do the 318ti/Z3 thing and "fog" it.. which is basically the same thing as cutting the bottom out, except maybe a little more efficient..

I'm glad I found this thread.

Some people do indeed make their own heat shields, however most of these folks do a pretty crappy job. They either use metal (which conducts head) or create a functional shield that looks terrible.

My shields are made out of ABS plastic. ABS plastic is a OEM bmw material so the shield looks almost like an OEM part. I also use an OEM gasket on top to correctly seal the hood against the shield. Most of the DIY fellas use cut hoses that do nothing.

To cut to the chase: I honestly believe I make the best shields. They look almost like an OEM part, bolt right on if you order the Turner/Bavarian intake kit, and actually work.

PM me here when you would like to order. I've sold over 200 of these suckers and the compliments keep rolling in...

    ViEtNaMeEh: here you go.

for perfectionists out there, it's was a fun project few years ago on the E34, so no flames please.

in case if you're wondering, the airbox was there temporarily

Looking at his site he doesn't SEEM to have a heatshield for the M10 powered e30. But he also doesn't list one for the M50 powered e30 either.

You ~DO~ have one of your own heatshields on your car, right Eric?

BMW makes the best cold air intake I've seen. They had the good judgment to build it right into the car. It takes cold air from in from of the heat exchangers, conducts via a short run to the air box, through the filter, and on to the rest of the intake system. It's elegant, simple, and best of all, it's there.

Most after market systems cost too much, do too little, and basically make a nice quiet car produce a hideous sucking sound. If they do anything it is usually to produce peaks and valleys in the power curve that often result in a reduced area under the curve and less overall useful power.

I'd urge you to consider other kinds of improvement to the car that will provide more value per dollar. E. g.: a chip, suspension mods, better tires and wheels, driver education, etc.

It's your money and these are only my ideas, but I hope you will consider them.

    cheers,

    Joe

I do indeed have a heatshield on my own car, but it was a one off design.

I do not make shields for the m10 as I cannot find a car for a template.

I also disagree with everything Joe said. Obviously I make these shields and want to sell them, however I would not be producing these if they did nothing. People also would not be buying them if they did nothing. I've run a cone filter on both the m20 and m50 engines and honestly believe there is a difference. While we all know the m20 does not respond to mods like the M50 engine, every dyno test of the M50 engine I have seen shows significant gains from the intake. If you want the most of your m20 engine, get an intake kit with my heatshield.

    Joe also said:

"basically make a nice quiet car produce a hideous sucking sound"

Your the first person I think who has ever called an E30 quiet. These are not luxury cars...they are sports go-carts with some luxury refinements. The intake suction noise is pleasing to enthusiasts, but quiet enough to keep the stockers from complaining. The intake noise from my car has never bothered me or any of my passengers....even some very pretentious and shallow females.

Considering my stock airbox is smaller than my E36 318i airbox.. i'd say there's some air flow restriction issues at hand...

LukasBMW: Does your heatshield work with cars equipped with cruise control? I was looking at my engine bay today and there doesn't seem to be much space with the CC module in there.. Also, I think i saw mentioned that it works with certain aftermarket cone intakes without modification, any chance you have a list of these?

My shield does work with cruise control. However you may need to bend the cruise control bracket slightly to keep it from contacting the shield. This isn't a big deal as the bracket easily bends under slight hand pressure.

The "powerflow" intake kit works without modification. Almost every major tuner sells the kit (some just use plastic adaptors, others use black metal or exposed metal).

The ones to avoide are the ebay $29.95 kits with a fake wide K&N cone and a cheap ass AFM adaptor piece.
