Still trying to make up my mind if I want a 540 or M5. Drove the m5 the other day and liked the the car alot but the power was less than expected. I understand the 540 may feel faster because of the torque but I'd still like to know how much power these cars actually make - to the wheels. Also, is there a weight difference between the two? So any dyno numbers and curbweights for each of these cars?
Why are you torturing yourself. Ask yourself what you want out of your car. Is it a daily driver, traffic, parking woes? If the answer to those questions are yes then you don't want an E34 M5. A automatic 540 will be much easier to live with under those circumstances. If you want a car to rip around in, take on trips, track days, fun stuff then go M5. The M5 is a special car it should be savored like fine wine. Then drive the freak out of it.
try driving them on a twisty
Hi group,
This is the RWHP (Rear wheel Horse power) which equates to 377HP At the Fly wheel with a 20% loss for the drive train. Only mods I have on my car are, Landzer Motorsport Chip and Eisenmann High performance exhaust with 70mm Tips. The car is equipped with the Euro Metal Cats and the rear resonator. The ambient temperature was 90° Fahrenheit which is not favorable to run Dyno Tests. But this is the real Dyno results as of May 14th 2004. Hopefully should get better numbers when the weather cools down..

anyone got the curbweights?
Both cars weigh in around 3800 lbs or so, not too much difference between the two weight wise. I thin if you can't decide, then you've already decided, get the 540.The m5 is going to be a more expensive car to buy and probably to maintain, so if you can't really see any appreciable difference, you might as well let your wallet do the deciding for you.
Actually the m5 is several HUNDRED lbs. heavier.
According to the owners manual ,my car weighs 3803lbs w/ a full tank of gas.
Whats the weight of an E34 540?
Is that full tank of gas low carb?
Its kind of funny that the manual quotes weight w/a full tank
dyno w/ conforti chip. was also very hot.

Kris,
Nice dyno numbers, I haven't put mine on rollers yet. The engine was in need of a tune-up and valve adj. Thats all done now, plus I converted the AC and put in new radiator and condenser. She's dyno ready now, very happy and goes like stink. I just need to book some dyno time.

Actually, the m5 is just 100lbs heavierOriginally Posted by jimmyz2

Hey there, who is this Landzer company you got your chip from? I m thinking of Superchips for my 3.8L, but those are some nice numbers you published. Do you have a link or something?Originally Posted by Euro_M5

Maybe we could hook up a combo NorCal 5er meet and dyno day at this new shop. Edge grand openning threadOriginally Posted by Mblaster
