Hey all,
I know of 2 types of instrument clusters, one with the picture of the BMW and lights and arrows showing where the problem(s) are, and the one like mine in my 2003 540 that just shows text in mid/cluster.
Do only certain models of the E39 come with one type of cluster and other models come with the other type, or is it based on year?
Thanks!

High OBD is known as IKE and low OBD is know as the KOM using BMW's three letter acronyms.
I think, THINK... (as far as the US)
The KOM was used on the pre-facelift 528i. The IKE was used on the pre-facelift 540i.
All the facelift 525i, 530i, 540i and all the M5s have the IKE.
Not true I have 2001 525 with low obc. Us model.
I think it was included with one of the packages, premium package or something. Standard on 540's/M5's
I have none out as well.
I didn't mean the premium package specifically, was just throwing it out as an example. It came with some sort of package I'm pretty sure
E39, 523i, 1999, M52TUB30, 5 SPEED MANUAL, UUC SHORT SHIFTER, EURO SPECS, KONI YELLOWS, OEM SPORTS SPRINGS, OEM SPORTS SEATS, ALCANTARA HEADLINER AND /A/B/C PILLARS, OEM M-TECHNIC AERODYNAMIC, OEM M5 FRONT GRILLS, OEM M5 REAR FOLDING MIRRORS, OEM M5 REAR SWAYBAR, OEM M-TECHNIC II FRONT SWAYBAR, REMUS DUAL TIP MUFFLER, TITANSILVER, BIXENON, M PARALLEL SPOKE 66 STAGGERED, OEM M-AUDIO SYSTEM, NAV SCREEN 16:9, INTRAVEE II iPOD INTERFACE, OEM TCM WITH BLUETOOTH, Y RESONATOR DELETE, INTAKE HORN DELETE, CDV DELETE, CHARCOAL TITANIUM BRUSHED TRIM, FAN CLUTCH DELETE, ELECTRIC FAN, 3.15LSD DIFFERENTIAL, ESS TS2+ SUPERCHARGER, AQUAMIST METHANOL + WATER INJECTION
PANAMA, CIUDAD DE PANAMA
There are a few types (Please correct me if im wrong)
Early 97 High obc ( IKE & Cluster were seperate)
Early 97 Low obc ( same as above?) << not sure for I6
High OBC Cluster ( w/ 6500 rev limit for I6)
Low OBC Cluster ( w/6500 rev limit for 16)
High OBC Cluster ( w/ 6000(?) rev limit for V8)
High OBC Cluster ( M5 )

This applies to the e39s imported to the USA:
- all V8s (540i/iT/M5) have the high cluster & high MID (or optional Nav)
- all 528i/iT models have the low (base) cluster & low MID
- the 525i/iT & 530i could come with either set-up depending on installed options or pkgs...for example, if ordered with onBoard Nav...the high cluster is included because onBoard Nav requires the high cluster.
FYI (for those unfamiliar with the difference between the low & high clusters & MIDs):

Interesting info. Thanks to all who replied. Guess I wasn't the only one on the board who didn't totally understand the whole high/low cluster thing.
It's also interesting that the low cluster looks like it has an extra "oil" icon on the lower right side (as compared to the high cluster), and also an extra icon on the bottom right that looks like an exclamation point (!) surrounded in a some sort of ring. Anyone know what these 2 extra icons stand for?
In the high cluster, I get warning and error messages in the text display area. Where is this info shown in the low cluster? Where the car graphic is displayed?
Finally, can the low cluster be unlocked allowing various tests/info on operating condtion to be displayed, as you can with the high cluster?
Thanks again for the really interesting info I've learned from this board!

Same here low obc but high mid.
The phone button doesn't mean you have the high MID. Its the BC button that distinguishes the low MID from the high MID.Originally Posted by milla290

The high cluster comes with either a MID unit or the TV screen (4:3 or 16:9)
Just go into 'computer' or 'settings' to see some of the info thats normally displayed on the MID.
4:3 is square 16:9 is rectangle
No, it mean for each 4 parts horizontally there are 3 equal parts vertically. Same with 16:9. For every 16 parts horizontally there are 9 parts vertical. They are both in the shape of a rectangle. If it was square it would be even. Aspect ratio is what its called.Originally Posted by shortedaman
Ah.. I missed that. I do NOT have the BC button.Originally Posted by Qsilver7

It was just a generalization. A 4:3 screen looks square. Our eyes can't see a perfect square properly. If you ever look at a perfect square it looks like it is taller than it is wider and if you ever show a 1:1 square compared to a 4:3 rectangle, I would guarantee a large number of people would pick the 4:3 as the square and the 1:1 as the rectangle.
Plus comparing a 4:3 to a 16:9, the 4:3 is obviously more square.
If you want, do what I did way back in 04 when I got my 97: retrofit to High OBC. Take a harness. I had to import mine, but I believe that because I and a few others did that, it is now mastered in the BMW-US database. I can find you the part number if you want. Was a serious PITA to wire in. Had to hit a patch panel under/behind the glove compartment. I'll attach the instructions later if you want.
