    1996 bmw z3 1.9

    z3 trouble shooting

    i got a 1.9 z3 1996 an last night a chek engine light up in the cluster so i plug my computer and they say knock sensor circuit (bank 1 ) what does it mean an how i can fix that ?

    Change the Knock Sensor. If you have a bentley manual should be able to tell you.

    so you sure its the knock sensor this is not a bad conection or somting like that ?

    It's a circuit fault caused by one of the following:

    1. sensor is bad
    2. sensor wiring is bad
    3. wiring between sensor and DME is bad

    That being said, it's usually always a bad sensor but worth testing out continuity first. Continuity testing is much easier than replacing the sensor.


    Test the continuity at the DME (disconnect battery first) and take an ohm reading. If bad:
    Test the continuity at the sensor connector under the intake (to rule out the wiring going to the DME).

    good seem easy to do i gonna try this out thanks a lot for you suport

    The only times it's turned out to not be the sensor but the wiring has been when a mechanic cut through some wires doing other work and when rodents have chewed through some wires. You'll need the DME pinouts and wiring diagrams (which I assume you have).
