So I decided to swap out my reupholstered seats. I think they came out nicely in the end but I wasn't happy with them so out they go. I'll either sell them or rework them a bit.
Instead, I found a nice tan interior locally and spent a few weeks creating this. Custom two-tone interior. Black and tan door panels (combined tan inserts from a tan set with my original black ones), oem sand leather 18 way adjustable comfort seats from an e38 (great on my bad back, i always hated the sport seats without lumbar support), wrapped my A pillars and sun-visors in microsuede, and installed an oem black headliner. VERY happy with how it turned out.

Where did you find an OEM Black headliner in the States?

Looks really good, I always loved this. I always thought if I got another E39 I would buy one with the tan interior, and dye all the tan parts black save the seats and door inserts to get a look like you have. I think it looks really great.
I dont like the armrest though. I like the way the black flows really nicely but the armrest breaks it up.

nice
Looks great! identical interior I would want only with the caramel inserts and seats.
This is exactly what I want to do to my touring. I only would like to die the seats Modena
Yeah I see your point. Regardless I'm going to upgrade to a euro armrest or an e38 armrest so I'll probably go with black at that point.
As for the wood trim, not really sure what to do with it. I kind of like it as is, and the only other thing I can think of that would work is piano black but I haven't seen that for less than $500. I might paint mine eventually but for now I'm going to enjoy it as is.

Much nicer, looks great. I would agree with others black armrest, black e-brake boot, maybe black rear seat backs
Wood trim looks perfect with that two tone I wouldn't mess with it personally
You mean black front seat backs I assume? Reason I decided not to do that is that on the e38 seats a good portion of the back is leather and I'm reluctant to dye it so I'll be leaving it as is for now.
I also like the tan e-brake boot but I agree with you guys on the armrest. I'll be going either e38 or euro so when i do it'll likely be black. I'm not a fan of the e39 armrests in general. They feel plastic and cr*ppy.
Cheers though, thanks for the comments,
Dan

I'm undecided about the e-brake boot--half of me thinks you should either have a tan shifter boot too, or both in black--but I sort of like the armrest contrast.
The two-tone look is actually complimented by the wood imho, and I usually hate wood. I may have to do this if I ever find myself the perfect E38/E39 Sport
Good thing is if you find someone parting a 740 with good seat backs that don't have broken magazine holders you can swap them out and not have to dye them.

i just bought tan leather seat set! what i want to know is how you made the two tone door card, you used a black one and a tan one to make a blk tan one right?
the door cards seem to be just one unit, did you pull apart and glue?? what was procedure please!

Well done OP! Piano black on the trim for sure. I'd also go all black on the console so that it flows better. But I'm just nitpicking now.
Essentially. There are also a bunch of plastic tabs on the back that you have to cut. Honestly though doing it again I would just dye the door cards. I did that on my passenger side and it came out better. Just remove the handle, tape off, and dye the center tan. Or do the reverse and dye the plastic part black.
Thanks. Yeah I went for Bruyere Wood and I bought a euro-spec arm-rest that I'm wrapping in black leather.

M5s came with black Alcantara headliners standard
"M-sport" 540s (2003 in USA and 01+ europe) got a black cloth headliner... technically dark grey, "anthracite", but its available on US cars
Looks like OP has the cloth one (non-M5). Hard to tell though, but FWIW the black cloth was standard on european M5s, with the Alcantara being an option.
