I have been searching for some info on fitting a single Walbro pump in place of the dual internal/external setup.
From my understanding I need:
- In-tank pump
- Metal fitting to delete the external pump
Two questions:
- Which pump will fit the fuel pump carrier, and do I need to modify it to physically fit?
- Which pump has a good enough flow rate.
Will this one work?

Nothing? I figured this was a common modification.

There was a DIY on R3V or something about how to retrofit a Walbro to the old pump cage, but I can't find it.
IIRC its not hard to do at all, I think it basically just dropped in without issue.
I've been considering this mod for a while.
Molon Labe.
Does anyone know if the lines running to the top of the tank have to be modified/replaced?
Also, does the fuel return line need to be modified?
just put a pump from a 91 318is in there. drop in. designed to fit, replaces both internal and external pumps and uses your existing fuel level sender.
So whats the advantage to the external fuel pump delete? The new external pump is a third of the price of the internal one.
Not necessarily. Failure of the single in-tank pump on later models is slightly more common than the failure of either pump in the two pump system. The two pump system splits the work between the pumps and is a contributor to long life. But whether a single two dual pump system, the most casue of pump failure is rust in the tank. Rust is highly abrasive and will take out a pump.
The car makes it possible, but the driver makes it happen.
