I just bought a '96 M3 last November and it has a glass moon roof. It's a Luxo package car, and at first I just thought it was part of the Luxo pack. But now, after a bit more reading, it doesn't sound like it. I was just wondering if anybody knows how common/uncommon they are?
Thanks
damn i never new that M3s came with glass sunroofs. post pics bc i want to see this.

not an option. they were considered 'dangerous'
Hmmm... interesting. If it wasn't an option, where did it come from?
I'll post pictures as soon as I get back home next weekend for those curious.
I am working on the development of a fiberglass sunroof panel, this will be a cheaper method of weight reduction, and great for anyone that wants to keep a stock look.
I want to see some pics. I've heard of people having aftermarket glass roofs added, but I've never seen one. Does it work the same as the factory sunroof?

There was never an glass moonroof for the E36 from the factory. It must have been an aftermarket sunroof.

i bet it looks a little bit like the sunroof being open...
you can get an aftermarket sunroof for a jeep wranger so I wouldn't be surprised.Originally posted by r6e36

though this would be a nice factory option, I'm just used to having a steel sunroof now where I can completely block out the light. If a retrofit did become available, I don't know if I'd switch.

Hey man, I'm a professional!
isn't a steel sunroof more rigid as well?
2000 Ferrari 360
2004 Yamaha R1
2007 Porsche 911 C2S Cabrio

1995 M3 (SOLD HELP ME FIND IT TO REBUY)
1998 740IL (Sold)
2003 x5 4.6is (Sold)
I don't think the steel roof offers any more rigidity 'cause it's not really supporting anything (and the hole is already there in the roof).
If there was a retrofit kit, I'd prolly look into it - most glass roofs offer some sort of pull-over shade to block the sun on those brutal summer months.
Ok... now I'm really wondering where the moon roof came from.
I'm out of town on business right now, so I'll snap some pics and post them when I get back in town.
As for details of the roof. It fits perfectly in the opening, funtions just like the stock sunroof (slides into the roof, tilt and slide, etc.), and has a pull over shade that slides right into the head linner. I didn't see any signs of it being aftermarket when I purchased the car... then again I wasn't looking all that closely. I'll have to look closer when I get home now.
Thanks,
Mike V.
Sounds sweet! I want one!

I have been thinking about getting a glass moonroof on my car since I got it. I have asked several shops to make one for me but no one was willing to do it. It's definitely an aftermarket moonroof because there was no factory option or retrofit kit for it.
The steel sunroof just sucks :

steel is lighter

Yeah, I want to see pictures of this too. It must have been a on-off thing... in all my years of owning E36's, I've never ever heard of any manufacturer making such a thing... otherwise I think a lot of us may have gotten one.

sweet, but i'd rather spend the $$ or other mods othern then retrofitting a glas moonroof in my car
