| 8 Series (E31) (1991 - 1997) As the last E24 rolled off the production line in 1989, its replacement was quick on its heels to fulfill the fantasies of those looking for a touring coupe with all of the luxury, performance, and prestige of a BMW, only now with both 8 and 12 cylinder engines. |

The 850 V12 and the 840 V8 both use chains for the cam drive.

Great news!
I thought the 12 cylinder engine's design was completely based on the 12-valve M20 six, which used a belt. Glad they went in for the more reliable chain design. Has anyone here had their cam-chains replaced? DIY? Not DIY? Maybe in a few years, I might buy an E31... I lust for the sound of a throaty V12 -- plus I love the classic pillarless design and the sleek look of those flip-up headlamps.

Oh yes, that's a great site, I've been there and downloaded videos, etc.
I especially like the section under FAQ explaining engine smoothness. **edit** Jsut noticed the new videos with high bitrate released this past weekend!
