1982 E21 320i For Sale, Original Blue Plate CA Car
Up for sale is my clean & all original blue-plate California-car E21 1982 BMW 320i, I rescued this car from a certain death as it was heading for the wrecking yard. My original intent was to completely restore it with a few tasteful upgrades while I used it as a commuter. However, I recently purchased a new GTI do drive daily, so this car is not being driven & is just taking up space at this point. Plus, my E30 is being prepped this winter for autocrossing in 2012, so selling this car will help fund that project.
This car is in good condition overall for it’s age & is mostly original. It is a rust-free CA car, has approx. 229K original miles, gets great mileage (27 MPG avg overall, around 30 on the freeway) & looks & drives pretty good. It is Ascotgrau (gray) over a tan interior, comes with the original 13” Alpina style alloy wheels (including spare), pretty strong original M10 1.8 SOHC 4-cyl (no leaks & extremely clean…look at the pics!), 5-speed manual transmission, factory A/C, newer BMW AM/FM cassette, Bilstien shocks, manual sunroof (no leaks), & has a ton of new parts that have been installed over the past 6 months. Here is a run-down of what has been done...
New A/C Delco battery, all belts, hoses, valve-cover gasket, cap & rotor, spark plugs, air filter, fuel filter, front lower control arms, recent radiator, new tires in the last year or so, & more. It also has a new shifter boot, Momo leather shift knob, & dash mat. I have also partially restored some of the interior, including a new rear package tray & back seats from a 79 320i. I have turned it into a VERY reliable daily driver, I would not hesitate driving it anywhere.
I have enjoyed this car the way it is for quite some time, but to be in GREAT condition here is what it may need…
The 2nd gear syncro in the transmission is weak. I am able to shift it fine without grinding if I am careful, but any sort of fast shifting into 2nd gear will result in grinding. The engine runs very well, but it does burn a bit of oil…approx. a quart every 2-3K miles. The gauge cluster has been changed while I owned the car because the odometer stopped working. I replaced it with a junk yard unit, but it does not read correctly (about 10-15 MPH too fast). The interior is decent & soooo much better than when I got it, but to be real nice it needs new carpet & the front seats need to be re-done or replaced. As with most E21’s, the dash unfortunately has some cracks, & the A/C does not blow cold. The body looks good from 20 feet away & the paint is pretty shiny & mostly original, but as you would expect from a 30 year-old car up close it does have a lot of scratches, chips, dings & blemishes.
Otherwise this is a solid, good running classic BMW. It passed CA smog recently & I will provide a current smog to any prospective CA owner, the registration has just been paid & is good until December 2012, I have the clean CA title in hand & in my name, & all of the original books are included.
I hate to get rid of the car as I have invested a lot of work into it, but my E30 needs my attention right now & my teenage kids aren’t interested in an old BMW (go figure). Asking $1850, PM or email with any questions or to set up a viewing. sportscarfinders at yahoo dot com, lots more pics available. Located in the East San Francisco Bay Area.
